New CBeebies show has pissed me right off

Moon and Me.

One female character, who happens to be a tiny little dolly? Give me a break.

Upsy Daisy the token female was bad enough on Night Garden but this is a total joke!

It's 2019 for fuck's sake, can we not just have 50/50 male and female characters for our toddler's bedtime TV shows? Would it really be so hard for the writers to do that?

Feel like I want to actually complain to the BBC Angry

I think CBeebies is pretty good overall. My 4 year loves Catie. Swashbuckle is another show with strong female characters both good and bad. Sarah and Duck is good for showing both female and male child characters who are just themselves without being stereotypical.

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2019 05:47

Thanks where, it was actually doc mcstuffins o was trying to think of, was that cbeebies or have I got mixed up?

MillytantForceit · 05/02/2019 10:11

This sounds like a job for the Palace of Righteous Justice:

Bowchicawowow · 05/02/2019 10:16

Things won’t change until the BBC start employing more female writers.

NeurotrashWarrior · 05/02/2019 10:23

Colly wobble is the biggest issue in this programme

SleepingStandingUp · 05/02/2019 10:28

@Bowchicawowow
Tbf, Numberblocks is pretty equal
Bing has two of each lead characters, and one of each lead parent
Peter has two guys to one girl and two male baddies but it's ancient
Swashbuckler has two strong females
Alphablocks is fairly even
ITNG has one of each plus an old dude
Hey Duggee kids are mixed and actually the smart one is a girl and the annoying one is a boy
Show Me Show Me is one of each
Nina is female
Sarah and Duck is a lead female
Charlie abd Lola is one of each
64 Zoo Lane is lead woman
Tommy Time has both and the teachers are one of each
Andy is a man but the head. Job is a woman
Chugginton has both, and the one telling them what to do is a female
The How Do We Do Boring Stuff is female
Giglebiz is Justin but he does do female characters
Octonauts isnt even
Go jetters isn't even
Magic Hands is two of each
Tonga Tails is led by a male lion but the support characters are fairly even
The presenters are mixed

So other than two shows, CBeebies probably has far more even representation than most shows

NeurotrashWarrior · 05/02/2019 10:38

Catie's amazing machines is pretty good.

CocoLoco87 · 05/02/2019 10:50

Yes DH likes Maddie in Do you Know and Katie and her amazing machines Hmm

The thing that annoys me about paw patrol, more than the imbalance of male/ female in the programme, is the merchandise! So often you can't get Skye on a lunch bag or t shirt for boys. And if it's girls items then it's just Skye and Everest. Why can't my son have Skye on his pants?!

Stringofpearls · 05/02/2019 10:55

I'd say Cbeebies tends to be fairly even, my baby loves Catie's Amazing Machines, they're amazing and they're machines Smile

Bowchicawowow · 05/02/2019 10:57

SleepingStandingUp There is a great deal of gender inequality on the BBC. It is far wider than CBeebies.

MaegorT · 05/02/2019 11:33

Wait wait wait
Ms Pontypine and half of her children, Ms Wottinger and all her children, Oo and Ee were all female.
The Harhoos might have been female too, who knows, the less we know about them the better, that's what I say.

MaegorT · 05/02/2019 11:35

I meant to write half of the Wottinger children, but fuck it, maybe it was all of them now that I think of it.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 05/02/2019 11:41

Ah, so the OP is completely incorrect?
One female character who is a doll, is just not true is it.

MaegorT · 05/02/2019 11:45

Upsydaisy wasn't the token female in the Night Garden. God knows if she's right about the new Moon baby thing.

NameyMcNameChange1 · 05/02/2019 11:51

OP is completely incorrect. The main character is female. Of the five remaining characters two are female, two are male and one is an androgynous lamb. There’s also a little boy at the beginning who tucks the dolls (and insanely terrifying clown) into bed at night. Although it looks like it might be like the Night Garden and feature a different child doing the tucking in each night.

NeurotrashWarrior · 05/02/2019 11:53

I repeat, after much prior analysis of this new programme, colly wobble is the deeper issue here.

That chef and meep thing off the muppets still give me nightmares. It's a merging of both of those.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/02/2019 12:07

Bowchicawowow my point is there really ISN'T in CBeebies, which makes it probably the best of their channels given the gender bias elsewhere.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/02/2019 12:10

Yes OP is wrong. As in anyone who believes CBeebies under or badly represents females.

And yes, OP missed the bigger issue which is the soul eating Colly Wobe under the stairs. I say ring her and cover her in salt and burn her to ashes then divide them and send them in locked boxes to the four corners of the earth so she can never regenetate

Blanketbox · 05/02/2019 12:15

I have problems even with Catie I’m afraid. I feel like her styling (long hair, never tied back; lipstick; nail varnish) is sending the message: “look! You can be girly and still like machines”. Fair enough if that’s what she likes, but I’d like to see more women on telly who aren’t traditionally feminine (like me!) I think CBeebies does better than many but it would be great if girls could just be instead of having to be designated using their appearance (pink; skirts; lipstick etc)

ribblerobble · 05/02/2019 12:28

The thing that annoys me about paw patrol, more than the imbalance of male/ female in the programme, is the merchandise!

Yes, I find this much more annoying than the programme itself: Skye and Everest only on pink nighties; the others only on blue pyjamas (my DD owns both).

I haven't watched Moon and Me because I thought the trailer looked a bit creepy...

We had a interesting discussion with my dad about the boy/girl Wottingers over assumption of the girls having pigtails.

Nquartz · 05/02/2019 12:41

The merch thing really annoys me too, DD wanted Lego movie pyjamas & the only ones I found were in the boys section in John Lewis because obviously only boys like that movie Hmm

PoffleWaffle · 05/02/2019 12:45

How can anyone tell what sex those characters on Moon and Me are?!

Have to say I didn't notice this angle like I did on Go Jetters, Paw Patrol etc, I just noticed that it was creepy as fuck.

And re: the night garden, aren't the tombleyboos female? And the Wottingers have a mum and a Dad and children who could all be of either gender?

purpleme12 · 05/02/2019 12:48

... And my girl loves Tom and Jerry
All the Tom and Jerry clothes for kids are in the boys section none in the girls!! It's such a neutral programme!

ReaganSomerset · 05/02/2019 13:02

How can anyone tell what sex those characters on Moon and Me are?!

Well, it's a good question. You can't really, but if I had to guess I'd say I that Pepi-Nana and little Nana are meant to be female, Mr Onion and the weird thing it shares a room with probably male, the clown in the bag is the stuff of nightmares and thus probably male, as most (though not all) horror film baddies are. Lily is a plant, so has both male and female sexual organs. The sheep probably doesn't matter.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/02/2019 13:09

CBeebies page says sreepy under the stairs eats your soul thing is a girl called Colly Woble
