Two books came out in 2016 or 2017 both written by female spies. They had used the middle aged woman's invisibility as some sort of invisibility cloak a la Harry Potter. Both books got good reviews and I really want to read them, but cannot remember neither the names of the authors or the book titles.

Emerencealwayshopeful · 29/01/2019 14:30

So many fictional detectives use this invisibility to their advantage. Miss Marple was one of the first.

It’s not surprising real life women also take advantage of our powers of existing without drawing notice.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2019 14:40

I know the Daily Mash is meant to be satire but that piece is straight truth!

“It’s a bit like having a superpower. Imagine all the shit I can fuck up whilst going completely unnoticed by the patriarchy. Maybe I’ll get together an army of similarly ‘invisible’ women to help me.
“The world isn’t going to know what’s hit it.”

Grin (Note that of course, women only want to fuck up shit, not shittily fuck up others)
ISmellBabies · 29/01/2019 14:41

It's a joke op. The daily mash does funny articles, they're not real.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 29/01/2019 14:41

Ooh love this, daily mash nails it yet again.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2019 14:43

It's a joke op. The daily mash does funny articles, they're not real.

The daily mash is funniest when it's closest to the truth.

AncientLights · 29/01/2019 14:52

It is absolutely the truth.

WhereYouLeftIt · 29/01/2019 14:52

Love the Daily Mash Grin! I often think their take on a topical story hits the spot.

FFSFFSFFS · 29/01/2019 15:00

Yes I know it's a joke....but it's not really a joke is it!

It's exactly how I feel about having become fat.

I'm actually hesitant to lose weight because being invisible to men is wonderful!

I love not getting groped, shouted at, leered at, etc.

MrsSpenserGregson · 29/01/2019 15:05

Have you seen this sketch? "Last Fuckable Day" by Amy Schumer, Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Drefuss and Patricia Arquette www.comedycentral.co.uk/inside-amy-schumer/videos/inside-amy-schumer-last-fuckable-day

ExplodedPeach · 29/01/2019 15:28

The daily mash prints more truth than quite a lot of non-satire news outlets.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/01/2019 15:43

It's always hilarious when men threaten women with this. What, you mean I can go about my day without anyone acting like I have an IF YOU WANT A SHAG JUST ASK sign on my chest? Yeah, that would be terrible. Heartbroken, I'd be.

LangCleg · 29/01/2019 15:53

Given the state of many men, I consider unfuckable to be a veritable compliment.

MrsTerryPratcett · 29/01/2019 16:01

It's such a delicate balance though. Between age, weight and other factors. If you're blonde you need to be older and fatter to escape notice. Instead of fake wedding rings when travelling, maybe fat suits and fake wrinkles?

beenandgoneandbackagain · 29/01/2019 16:09

It's amazing that we become invisible to men, but only to women between the ages of 15-25. We are perfectly visible to all other females.

Is it a fact that we are supposed to be upset that our existence is no longer being validated by the male gaze ?

FFSFFSFFS · 29/01/2019 16:09

I find tracksuit pants a universal invisibility coat. If I'm walking my dog and carrying a full poo bag I get to walk wherever I want and not a single male gaze is cast my way.

I. Love. It.

Ah but running gear has the opposite effect and suddenly renders you visible.

BillywilliamV · 29/01/2019 16:11

I'm in my 50s but over 6ft tall with purple hair..I refuse to be invisible.

Bowlofbabelfish · 29/01/2019 16:12

For when youth and beauty have gone, she will find that the place-between, once occupied by tension, has become a wellspring of cunning and resourcefulness.

umpteennamechanges · 29/01/2019 17:21

I like that verse @Bowlofbabelfish

Where is it from?

Bowlofbabelfish · 29/01/2019 17:32

It’s from ‘ Dune’. Plenty of old crones in there ;)

LaurieFairyCake · 29/01/2019 17:54

Yeah, I'd like to be able to wear what I want and have my hair and make up how I want without anyone saying anything ever. That's the ultimate goal.

But I ain't getting it so invisibility is very second best.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 29/01/2019 17:57

The only downside to invisibility is my rage when I'm out with my less invisible friends and men come over and start their usual shite. I have NO patience with this anymore. Told a guy to fuck off and stop annoying me at a gig last month and I thought he was going to hit me.

SkylightAndChandelier · 29/01/2019 18:01

I remember when I was a kid, thinking the Bene Gesserit were awesome.

It must have been one of the first movies I ever watched (I don't know what my parents were thinking really... because another one was The Life Of Brian!)

I must go back and read them again.

I'm fat and older, with kids. No-one notices me at all, I just pass by in a flurry of mother-shape
