The thread I wrote about attending Posie Parker's panel on gender identity and social media has attracted a lot of attention, and I thought it might be good to establish more of a dialogue. Ask me anything!

Also, to get this one out of the way: my babysitting rates are £15/hr, plus flights, and I'll provide a clean CRB check 😂

And sex-based protections already existed, until they were given away without consultation or thought for the consequences.

I would still like to know what characteristics all women and transwomen share that men do not.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/01/2019 17:46

But it will facilitate male bodied persons gaining access to women in women only spaces - hospitals, prisons, changing rooms, toilets, dorms...

BlackShutters · 30/01/2019 17:46

What message will you spread to your trans friends about us here on Mumsnet?
What have you learned from us?

I'd like an answer to this question too.

glitchliz · 30/01/2019 17:47

*If someone really thinks they were mis-assigned sex at birth, I would imagine they would hate their biological sexual organs - the penis, breasts etc- as this would be a glaring reminder, daily, of that error.

I would therefore imagine they would then want those offending reminders lopped off pronto, to be more congruent with the correct sex. Why does this not seem to happen so much for men do you think?*

Not all trans people have dysphoria. I don't understand it, because I have severe dysphoria, but I'll accept them on whatever basis they'd like to be accepted as.

That AMAs get a lot of attention and if you really want to do it justice, take the day off work or pick a weekend. I've learned that y'all are extremely online and that there are a great many fundamental things that we don't, and can't, agree on.

You didn't address 'Karen' can you see why self ID IS a problem? How do you think we can be safeguarded against that. I'll include genuine trans who want to go about their lives quietly in the 'we'

BlackShutters · 30/01/2019 17:52

Do you think you needed to start a thread to learn that?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/01/2019 17:52

I guess some people like to feel important. Hence the baseball bat pose. Ho hum.

AssassinatedBeauty · 30/01/2019 17:52

Do you have an American connection? Why all the y'all's and "folks"?

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 30/01/2019 17:52

Many men /Males (regardless of their gender identity) do not understand and then resist accepting the impact of male harrasment, abuse etc that girls and women experience.

For any adult male to assert their perceived 'rights' to identity validation over the safety, dignity and privacy of girls and women speaks volumes. Not least they do not understand and/ or respect child protection and Safeguarding vulnerable adults frameworks.

This has been illustrated on this thread.

OdeToDiazepam · 30/01/2019 17:53

Self I'd absolutely affects access to women's spaces!!

The equality act currently requires you to have a grc to have your records changed, All the requirements that necessitates to ensure that genuine gender dysphoric people only can access women's safe spaces. Self is would erase all of that protection

littlbrowndog · 30/01/2019 17:53

Hey Liz
Been reading the thread

I still don’t understand why you posed holding a baseball bat
It felt frightening and a threat of violence
It wasn’t like you linked to a sports site

It felt like a direct threat
Why did you do this

SkylightAndChandelier · 30/01/2019 17:53

Current laws were written with the idea that woman == adult human female - eg. the Equalities act, Maternity provision etc.

If the word woman is changed from meaning adult human female, to anyone who says they're a woman, what provision are the people proposing this change making to similarly change the laws which currently are written for adult, human females?

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 30/01/2019 17:53

That sounds horrible, why would they be scared or confused?

“Scay-ard of lil ole, semi-naked me with my baseball bat comforter! Why I do declare, I cannot fathom it!”

Aye, right you are OP. I’m a fan of the theatre of the absurd too.

OdeToDiazepam · 30/01/2019 17:54

and self id already HAS harmed women

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/01/2019 17:55

Only women though, right?

adeo1929 · 30/01/2019 17:56

Please can you explain why you don't think it will facilitate male violence against women?

Surely you can see it does? Self ID would mean I could legally identify as male, without going through any process, therefore having much easier access to men's spaces. The same would be true for men...

sackrifice · 30/01/2019 17:56

but treating other people the way they want to be treated is better.

I do, in that I understand being afraid of male violence

and yet...

by posing with a baseball bat you are:
a - not treating other people the way they want to be treated [women don't actually want to be battered with baseball bats]
b - demonstrating male violence.

Do you not get it at all?

R0wantrees · 30/01/2019 17:58

Not all trans people have dysphoria. I don't understand it, because I have severe dysphoria, but I'll accept them on whatever basis they'd like to be accepted as.

So Karen White is a trans person in your opinion.

I respect your right to accept people's identification of being trans. Presumably you also respect those who have one of the other many gender identities?

It is not possible though for a person to identify in or out of their sex. Policies and legislation which was based on sex, need to remain so.

Gender identities should absoutely be respected just as those who do not have a gender identity should be respected.

Sex and gender identities are different things.

Do you agree that clarity is important?

lisamuggeridge · 30/01/2019 17:59

The fourth wave of feminism where you need a bat to gain power over women. People said Weetabix ice cream was weird.

R0wantrees · 30/01/2019 17:59

apologies for my was/were Blush

clairestandish · 30/01/2019 17:59

A woman is someone who identifies as a woman doesn’t answer what woman means... if someone identifies ‘as a woman’ what are they identifying as?

Batteriesallgone · 30/01/2019 18:00

So for example maternity rights

The laws around that will need to have their wording changed

Do you feel any obligation to help with that? As you are contributing to the change in the former definition of woman as a biological definition?

Do you agree that pregnancy discrimination exists?

NeurotrashWarrior · 30/01/2019 18:00

because I have severe dysphoria,

Forgive me, I was under the impression from a previous post you don't have dysphoria? As you described it as euphoria.

Did you suffer from dysphoria from a young age?
