Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The logic of non-binary/ gender-fluid

I am honestly not saying this to be goady. I am genuinely trying to understand this issue further. I tried asking on a transgender sub on Reddit, but I was instantly banned. If it is too offensive to be discussed here, then I do apologize and will ask for it to be removed.

My question is this:

How can non-binary and gender-fluid exist alongside transgender?

From what I understand, transgender people believe that they have the wrong brain for their body. This error happens in the womb. Fine.

Non-binary people believe that they have no gender. But then, does this mean that their brain is genderless? Is this also an error in the womb?

Gender-fluid people believe that their gender changes daily. Does this mean that their brain changes daily too?

For me, the logic falls apart when comparing these three things. I don't think they can logically exist together.

Can someone talk me through it?

The answer is “shit.”

AnyOldPrion · 24/01/2019 18:41

Your mistake is in assuming there’s some logic you’re missing. There isn’t.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 24/01/2019 18:41

Bla bla dwinbbly wisblelly dickidada. There you go (makes as much sense).

They are just boring people trying to be interesting.

BareBelliedSneetch · 24/01/2019 18:43

Pips Bunce makes a complete mockery of the whole trans argument. And yet they embrace him/her (I have no idea what colour lace he/she is wearing today Hmm)

Ereshkigal · 24/01/2019 18:44

Followers of Gender can absolutely believe 6 impossible things before breakfast. They don't tend to concern themselves with coherence, consistency or logic.

Ereshkigal · 24/01/2019 18:45

It might be illustrative to listen to the recording from a recent Mermaids training session. The jelly baby theory will sort out your confusion.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 24/01/2019 18:46

There is no logic so it is waste of time trying to find any kind of logical consistency. It's all about subjective feelings and forcing others to validate those subjective feelz.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 24/01/2019 18:46

There is no logic.

pombear · 24/01/2019 18:47

The hormone wash within the womb was accidentally set to 'delicate wash 30 degrees' and therefore just sloshed around a bit, left a pleasant scent but did fuck all really, apart from coming out dripping wet because 30 degrees = we're not going to spin you very fast either 'cos you're delicate.

Therefore poor foetus waiting for instructions as to 'male or female programme' or 'male body-female brain-oopsy/female body-male/brain-oopsy' just tumbled around a bit in the water and now sits on the clothes-horse wondering what the fuck happened.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 24/01/2019 18:49

There is no logic. Because it is all about "being nice" and "not debating someone's existence".

LangCleg · 24/01/2019 18:51

It's all bit Transformers: Genders in Disguise! isn't it?

That's what comes of retrofitting material reality.

Bubonicpanic · 24/01/2019 18:54

I've been non binary gender fluid all my life. It's about trying to stop people from telling me I can't do stuff cos they are man things, not women things.

Same old liberation from sexist stereo types but now I need a badge saying they or all of the non binary achievements of women of my generation are boring middle aged white feminism.

JSmitty · 24/01/2019 18:55

"It's all bit Transformers: Genders in Disguise! isn't it?"

That's Trans Formers, you cis former scum.

Altogther:

Trans Formers are Formers!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2019 18:58

Maybe the 'logic' is like interfaith groups - religious people making common cause with others who have beliefs entirely inconsistent with their own, but who at least put belief before science and rationality?

LangCleg · 24/01/2019 19:00

That's Trans Formers, you cis former scum.

Mea maxima culpa! I submit to ritual humiliation immediately.

Badstyley · 24/01/2019 19:05

If one is gender-fluid, so has a woman day on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and a man day on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and they split the sundays a week about, does that mean they transition every night except for when they’re a man on Saturday and Sunday or a woman on Sunday and Monday?

It sounds a bit confusing to me, and exhausting. Wouldn’t that mean 12 brain transplants in a fortnight? Do they have a different brain each time or do they just alternate the same two brains? Maybe they keep the one they’re not using in a jar, ‘The Man With Two Brains’ style, or should I say ‘The Gender-Fluid Person With Two Brains’ style.

Datun · 24/01/2019 19:08

Being non-binary is not the same as being transgender. And actually completely conflicting, despite wanting to be lumped together.

It makes absolute sense, to feminists, to try and assume a persona that means you're not treated as either male or female. It's kind of the whole point of being gender critical.

So I get that, definitely.

Where non-binary people and reality part ways is they conflate gender roles with sex.

You don't want to be treated in the way a man or woman is treated.. Fine. Because society insists on treating them differently in every area of life. But you have to be treated as your actual sex, on the few occasions when it counts. Medically, sex segregation, etc.

I wish they would say I don't want to be treated as the female gender, not 'I'm not a woman/man.' Because normal people think they're unutterably ridiculous. And you lose the message.

Bubonicpanic · 24/01/2019 19:09

When I'm being an absolute arsehole it dawns on me that my man brain took over whilst I was not looking.

Bubonicpanic · 24/01/2019 19:10

Neither brain will do any cooking though, is that non binary?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 24/01/2019 19:15

Some days I wear a dress
Some days I wear jeans
Some days I wear makeup
Some days I can’t be bothered even to brush my hair
Some days I feel bolshy and outgoing
Some days I feel vulnerable and want to crawl back into bed

Oh my god that must make me......... normal?

BettyDuMonde · 24/01/2019 19:31

Non-binary seems to me to be the good bits of gender-bender 80s dressing, but with the addition of the elective trans surgeries and synthetic hormones.

The observed female at birth but completely Male presenting person on the TV show with Graham Linehan had had a mastectomy and grown a beard, but had recently switched from self describing as a transman to to self describing as non-binary. Which is probably easier on one’s mental health than demanding everyone suspend reality and accept them as a man, but throws up all sorts of questions relating to internalised misogyny - because their ideal of a default human, free of gender restraints, is a male one.

Catquest1 · 24/01/2019 19:40

Im a long time lurker.

I don't think its a goady qu OP - obviously there are ways of questioning things and everyone will have come across people who do deliberately goad - but i had always thought asking qus was a good thing. How do we ever understand new things if we don't ask. How do we ever change things if we dont ask and challenge.

Anyway. I dont know the answer to your qus. I don't understand it either. But i am uneasy at any situation in life when it seems prohibited to even ask for clarification. I dont think blindly accepting things is healthy or useful - it doesnt promote anyone's cause.

Asking qus is what led me to lurk here. Although ive probably got more now than ever before.

Bubonicpanic · 24/01/2019 19:41

That is that sad part of the current conflagration of non binary into the medicalisation of young women. My tits didn't stop me from taking part in male dominated activities. My persona as Ditun describes it was unstereotyped. That was possible in the less gendered 70s when we had rock gods like Chrissie Hind, Patti Smith ETC. to admire and emulate.

Ffsnosexallowed · 24/01/2019 19:43

It makes no sense at all. Similarly how can some people proclaim that sex is non binary but at the same time vehemently claim that they they were born into the wing body and are the opposite sex???

FabalaTheGreenGirl · 24/01/2019 20:10

Gender is a social construct and sex is biologically determined?
