Let's see if this gets agreed on Thursday:

Common sense breaking out all over 👏👏👏👏

Bubonicpanic · 22/01/2019 22:55

Fantastic

ChewyLouie · 22/01/2019 22:56

We are aware of an increase in common sense across the movement.
Exterminate!

WhereYouLeftIt · 22/01/2019 23:11

"We are aware of an increase in transphobia across the movement."

Hmm. That's interesting. Because translate that from TRA-speak into English and you get

'We've been rumbled and people have started to say no to us.'

And well done those Labour councillors! Puts some of the others to shame.

niddy · 22/01/2019 23:20

Brilliant! Some hope for common sense. Let's send them some support. Star

PositivelyPERF · 22/01/2019 23:26

We have written to the Councillors who have proposed the motion asking them to withdraw it and meet with us

What exactly is transphobic about it? The councillors have been extremely respectful in how the6 hav3 worded it. Is protecting actual females considered transphobic?

Funny how these people never actually say what the problem is. They simply scream that something is transphobic if it supports women or girls. It’s almost as if they don’t want to admit what the real problem is, for fear of people seeing the, for what the6 really are.

I've met Malcolm Brain. Former mayor, lovely man. Very supportive of young people and charities.

Popchyk · 23/01/2019 09:43

Simon Fanshawe, co-founder of Stonewall, has been taking an interesting position recently.

Of Henderson, he says:

twitter.com/SimonFanshawe/status/1087747903609860096

"This is Ann Henderson’s biography. A pretty impressive and long career from train driver to deput at Scottish TUC. Maybe worth a read @LGBTLabour before your ill judged tweet en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_Henderson_(campaigner)"

If allegations are to be made they need to be transparent not just ‘described as transphobic’. If there are serious issues they need to go through the appropriate process not aired via vague press statements."

He seems to take quite a gender-critical line generally.

Jackshouse · 23/01/2019 09:53

Transphobic - so they mean that they won’t put the needs of trans people before the needs of women.

On one hand it seems so radical but it’s not. We are going backwards when it comes to women’s rights.

littlbrowndog · 23/01/2019 09:56

There will be frothing I can guarantee
Frothing

HumberElla · 23/01/2019 10:05

Fantastic, well done Gateshead!
Absolutely fair and reasonable.
Followed by LGBT Labour who just can’t wait to whip up hatred, using emotive language and flying into a rage demanding it be removed. Why do they immediately want everything shut down? It does look suspiciously like they have no actual debate to bring to the table.

R0wantrees · 23/01/2019 10:52

Maybe be understanding what Heather Peto is actually telling us:

After a difficult year when some trans rights activists tarnished the Labour Party's LGBT and equality reputation, it is appalling that they attempt to smear Ann Henderson's election to Chair of the Equalities sub-committee

This was why TRAs needed #nodebate

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2019 11:08

Ssh. Don't let Fanny Haddock hear - he lives quite close I believe.

Of course!

Popchyk · 23/01/2019 11:26

And the Gateshead councillors cave.

UPDATE! The Gateshead Councillors have deferred the motion and agreed to meet with LGBT Labour.

If you have a response to the motion that you want us to share at that meeting, please email us at [email protected].

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2019 11:32

Is protecting actual females considered transphobic?

It would seem so.

Ereshkigal · 23/01/2019 11:33

Perhaps the councillors just feel they need to hear LGBT views before going forward with the motion as planned

AnyOldPrion · 23/01/2019 11:34

This!^^

How long can they go on screaming transphobia? How strong are the walls of their ever-decreasing bubble? Wonder how many actually believe it at all....

LeighKirton · 23/01/2019 11:35

Thanks for all the support.

I wouldn't say we've caved. We've agreed to defer the motion to meet with LGBT Labour at their request. It would have felt unreasonable to reject a discussion, when an open, respectful discussion is what we're calling for.

RhymesWithOrange · 23/01/2019 11:37

Welcome Leigh, your motion seemed entirely reasonable. Do keep us informed as appropriate. Good luck with your meeting!

Well done. You have my support, I wish my local labour councillors were the same!

NewYearsNiamh · 23/01/2019 11:41

Yes best of luck Leigh and thank you for what you’ve done so far.

HumberElla · 23/01/2019 11:44

LeighKirton thank you for clarifying this for us. I think you should absolutely meet with interested parties and stand by your principles of being open to discussion.
Discussion should not begin by having to parry accusations of transphobia though so I hope your meeting is productive.

Floisme · 23/01/2019 11:48

Well done and good luck Leigh - you have a lot of support. I wish I had someone like you to vote for.

MsMcWoodle · 23/01/2019 11:53

Well done.
