“Feminist = a person who believes in & stands up for the political, economic, and social equality of human beings.”

Women-the only disadvantaged group not allowed to centre themselves in their fight for liberation.

OP posts:
AdultHumanFemale · 07/01/2019 19:08

Jesus wept.

ArfArfBarf · 07/01/2019 19:09

WTF

FWRLurker · 07/01/2019 19:10

Isn't that the word-for-word definition of a humanist / egalitarian?

Easily sets up the argument that we don't need feminism anymore since it's "the same as humanism anyway" AKA the lefty-dudebros' argument for the last decade.

Qcng · 07/01/2019 19:16

Good grief!
Do you have a link?
Equality of human beings is just Marxism or basic equality. It's not feminism
Which is = liberation of women from patriarchy

Fuck sake.

Is there a link?

I'd start a petition, myself if I had more info.

LangCleg · 07/01/2019 19:19

FUCK OFF UN. THEN FUCK OFF AGAIN.

HumberElla · 07/01/2019 19:45

No UN, that’s just plain wrong.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 07/01/2019 19:47

The fuck?

That's entirely bonkers.

I mean geuinely that is so silly I don't even know where to put it :D

IStillMissBlockbuster · 07/01/2019 19:47

Fucks' sake

IStillMissBlockbuster · 07/01/2019 19:49

What the fuck is WITH this trend to arrogantly re-write the dictionary??? The UN thinks they know better than the OED or Cambridge dictionary or, basically all of them?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 07/01/2019 19:50

The UN women website has woman written all over it so this is a bit confusing!

Where did you see it?

arranbubonicplague · 07/01/2019 19:53

I know this is the excellent Jane Clare Jones (aka @LadyPrincesexual ) rather than Kathleen Stock but JCJ has a thread about yet another organisation failing to centre women - taken the bow of shame UN Women:

UN_Women wrote: Feminist - a woman who fights for the political, economic and social liberation of women.*

JCJ wrote: When 'UN Women' will not even name themselves as advocates for women things are fucked.

twitter.com/janeclarejones/status/1081975872465317889

It's an interesting thread with comments...

HumberElla · 07/01/2019 20:19

Vegetarian - person who believes in and stands up for eating all foods equally.

Nope. Doesn’t work does it.

theOtherPamAyres · 07/01/2019 21:14

The UN, what a shower of ill-informed apologists.

Last year, the UN declared that Julian Assange was being arbritrarily detained by the UK and called on the UK to release him. Yeah right.

That's the level of their contribution to any discourse.

What is galling about their tweet is the gif. It flashes up 'women', then 'men' then 'boys' and last of all on their list we find Angry 'girls'. It's like girls are an afterthought and the back of the queue when it comes to feminism.

PositivelyPERF · 07/01/2019 21:37

It’s just another way of allowing those that identify as women to gain even more power over women. It means that mean can openly take roles meant for women in the UN.

powershowerforanhour · 07/01/2019 22:55

What a load of toss.

Beamur · 07/01/2019 23:03

Changed a bit from Emma Watson speech for the UN only 4/5 years ago
www.unwomen.org/en/news/stories/2014/9/emma-watson-gender-equality-is-your-issue-too

GeorgeFayne · 07/01/2019 23:17

Unbelievable! Amazing what a difference a word makes.

I would rephrase: "Feminist: a person who believes in & stands up for the political, economic, and social equality of female human beings."

Time to find a new children's charity to support. Plenty of good ones out there...

Unbelievable! I looked for the source but found this instead on the UN Women site
^Concepts and definitions
Development of an adequate understanding of mainstreaming requires clarity on the related concepts of gender and equality.

Equality between women and men (gender equality): refers to the equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities of women and men and girls and boys. Equality does not mean that women and men will become the same but that women’s and men’s rights, responsibilities and opportunities will not depend on whether they are born male or female. Gender equality implies that the interests, needs and priorities of both women and men are taken into consideration, recognizing the diversity of different groups of women and men. Gender equality is not a women’s issue but should concern and fully engage men as well as women. Equality between women and men is seen both as a human rights issue and as a precondition for, and indicator of, sustainable people-centered development.

Gender: refers to the social attributes and opportunities associated with being male and female and the relationships between women and men and girls and boys, as well as the relations between women and those between men. These attributes, opportunities and relationships are socially constructed and are learned through socialization processes. They are context/ time-specific and changeable. Gender determines what is expected, allowed and valued in a women or a man in a given context. In most societies there are differences and inequalities between women and men in responsibilities assigned, activities undertaken, access to and control over resources, as well as decision-making opportunities. Gender is part of the broader socio-cultural context. Other important criteria for socio-cultural analysis include class, race, poverty level, ethnic group and age^.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 08/01/2019 06:32

So women are erased again - by the UN

And women covertly reduced to doing all the emotional and moral labour on behalf of the whole world whilst men get on with the serious business of running it.

Fuck Off

How come all these organisations employ such thick people who obviously have never been taught to critically think - is here a job club for placing those with least competence in positions of influence?

womanformallyknownaswoman · 08/01/2019 06:35

And where’s the mention of SEX discrimination not fucking gender

Goddess how they twist their words in the names of including and appeasing men

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 08/01/2019 06:43

Black Lives Matter- a group committed to the equality of all, including (especially) white people
Disability rights- a movement aimed at ensuring that nobody is discriminated against, whether disabled or able-bodied
Gay rights groups- fighting for the rights of gay people and heterosexual since the 1960s.

This shit is fucking ridiculous and shows that it's not really about trans people at all- it's about a wide-scale societal dismantling of feminism. The plan is firstly to make feminists hated through the terf thing, then to deny that the liberation of women is actually necessary or even a thing. Feminism is now about men (reminds me of Laurie Penny the other day tweeting for male experiences of feminism). Hurrah, welcome to Gilead.

Beamur · 08/01/2019 07:38

OP where did you originally see this quote?

nauticant · 08/01/2019 08:32

It's in the janeclarejones twitter link above:

twitter.com/UN_Women/status/1081469111975272448

It's from the twitter account of UN Women.

Melanippe · 08/01/2019 08:58

I really think we need to go back to calling it Women's Liberation, there's zero ambiguity as to the target group then.

JSmitty · 08/01/2019 09:16

The UN is only ever the sum of its parts, with Saudi Arabia on the Human Rights Committee and Putin's Russia with a veto.

Russia's drive for 'traditional values' has effectively decrminalised domestic violence if it's only bruises once a year.
