Mermaids given £500,000 by National Lottery (Sunday Times)

A transgender charity that campaigns for children to be given prohibited sex-change treatment has been awarded £500,000 by the national lottery.

The payment to Mermaids has angered MPs, feminists and women’s organisations, who accuse the charity of bullying doctors, promoting falsehoods and using “emotional blackmail” to pressure parents to support life-changing medical interventions for their children. Mermaids will use the money to create a network of 45 groups nationwide.

Who made them god? Why do they decide who needs to know? What are their qualifications in this issue? What are their aims? What do they want?

Just read the article on Huffington Post The Rise Of Anti-Trans Activism Is Harming Children, Not Helping Them www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/the-rise-of-anti-trans-activism-is-harming-children-not-helping-them_uk_5c1900b5e4b02d2cae8d5ecb?fbclid=IwAR037srMq9vrB24B4nugU54UhqN_ezxYz2uCLjM49BTpOGOpudRIRmkB7qI

Lots of unevidenced statements and non sequiturs

.... going through normal puberty causes potential 'long term harm' to trans and gender-variant kids

....."it’s hard for me to explain why something so obviously beneficial as support for trans and gender-variant children and their families should continue to be funded" (... no one is saying these children and their families should not not be supported. The question is whether Mermaids is competent to give that support! ).

I wondered how this passes for journalism, even in the HuffPo, so I clicked on the young writer's profile to their personal story about getting a double mastectomy because they is non binary Choosing Top Surgery Was Choosing To Trust Myself To Know Who I Really Amwww.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/non-binary-top-surgery_uk_5c06396ae4b0cd916faf5ade

Its bloody heartbreaking.

"the pain the gore and the fascination" of the surgery

"In the wake of years of throwing my ‘self’ bodily into the hands of external authorities - fiction, God, abusive men - I am still learning to abandon the stubbornly defensive ‘self’ that sprung up to curl tightly around the sickly, damaged version of itself it existed to protect. "

"The history of the unruliest parts of my ‘self’ is a litany of these objectively bad choices; the fact that, in the end, I don’t regret a single of them, is what underpins the quiet certainty that’s the last part of my consciousness to fall asleep with the surgical anaesthesia."

I still can't believe HuffPo and its readers are applauding at doctors removing healthy organs from the bodies of emotionally troubled young people.

It makes the grant all the more strange. My memories from a while ago of applying for grants is that
a) you had to confirm that the project was not controversial.
b) that you had to attach copies of essential policies. For a grant this size, working with very vulnerable (remember those suicide stats) children, safeguarding should be the first of those.

Do the BigLottery processes need scrutiny as well?

Note I found the safeguarding policy via Google, so there is a chance it has been updated, though I could not find anything else nor reference to Board minutes approving anything else. My experience of helping a children's sports club meet compliance requirements, was that this and other key documentation, had to be readily available to members via our website.

I once applied for a Lottery Awards for All £5000 to run a weekly estate football scheme for 100 kids for several months. The ammount of bureaucracy and scrutiny was unbelieveable, and off-putting. Why would there be less scrutiny for something so much larger.

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/12/2018 09:21

Why would there be less scrutiny for something so much larger.

Because at a certain level you’re plugged into the right networks and it’s all chums awarding chums? Rather like the Jack the Ripper museum/diva stuff exposed by private eye recently.

FlyingOink · 19/12/2018 09:23

The erase of transexualism and dysphoria as medical conditions was equally concerning.
Imagine if I said that clinical depression was an outdated term and from now on you just had to use the term "sad"....and anyone that ever felt even slightly sad came under the label. Instead of the x thousand people diagnosed with depression we now have x million people under the new sad umbrella. What happens to those with genuine clinical depression?
Good point

LangCleg · 19/12/2018 09:31

The sheer fucking idiocy of a policy that says "this group of children is at elevated risk of suicide - let's not tell their parents!" should be enough to justify the withdrawal of any pending grants.

Not just not tell them: actively work to prevent them finding out.

Let adults keep their secrets; hide things from parents; train admin staff to tell lies; bypass CAMHS - all of this is a groomer's/abuser's charter. Even if you are for child transition, you should run a mile from any organisation trying to isolate children and put them outside child protection frameworks.

The Big Lottery Fund needs to do some due diligence, and fast.

Emailed both Dawn And complaints. Got a reply from Camelot customer care this morning:

Thank you for your email dated 18 December 2018 regarding the grant for Mermaids.

I am very sorry to learn of your concerns.

I would like to let you know that, although we are responsible for generating returns for National Lottery Good Causes, we play no role in the allocation of funding. This is the specific responsibility of 12 National Lottery distribution bodies chosen by Parliament, each with specialist knowledge of their sectors.

I would suggest that you contact the appropriate distributing body, the details of which can be found by copying and pasting the below web address in to your browser or by calling the National Lottery Funding Hotline on 0845 275 0000.

www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk

Whilst I appreciate that this was not the outcome that you were hoping for, I hope that the information has been helpful. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you the best of luck in the future.

Kind regards

Nicola Murphy

The last one I did was for stage lights for a community centre. Same. And nothing to do with contact with children or vulnerable adults!

Needmoresleep · 19/12/2018 09:50

Ovula, yes Camelot won't be happy with BigLottery damaging their brand and threatening their revenues.

My guess is that this will be the reason Mermaids get dumped.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/12/2018 09:52

I'm not sure they will get dumped.

Glinner · 19/12/2018 10:13

RedToothBrush · 19/12/2018 10:27

I am not convinced they will get dumped.

People want to look woke too much. Its a brand in itself.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/12/2018 10:36

Not to mention that this is coming down from above.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 19/12/2018 10:42

Well, the Big Lottery Fund don't fund campaigning or lobbying groups.

Lobbying is now in Mermaids' mission statement.

And that's even without everything else.

Glinner · 19/12/2018 10:44

Also, my lovely new friend Julia Robertson who writes for 'After Ellen' (about the only LGBT outlet listening to lesbian concerns about gender ideology) gave me permission to post this DM from her.

"The whole world has gone mad. Any rational lesbian knows this is abusive bc...well...look at us (this WAS more than half of us as kids).

Lesbians specifically said we needed men to speak up, because for anyone to listen, men would have to say it first. I actually said just that in a few articles I've written.

Obviously, you have tons of lesbians writing you in distress, as do I...Why do any of us need to be biologically related to you for you to help us out?..

These despicable homophobes have no idea... the ripple effect they've caused. The depression that I'm seeing in my DMs, calls my wife and I will take at all hours... We are the siblings and the parents. Young lesbians don't have many people listening or speaking up for them. I go off twitter for a couple of days and they get nervous and start DM-ing and emailing...

How dare they make such defamatory and wildly untrue statements about you. It's basic psychology to know that these kids have not even come close to reaching full cognitive brain development. It's also basic knowledge that a lot of us (even celebs like Ruby Rose, Rupert Evert, etc, that are gay) are grateful they didn't grow up in the world of now. I mean come on! At one point I wanted to be Ralph Machio!

This is child abuse. It's known that "blockers" are not a "pause button" ... Liberal studies show 3 out of 4 kids naturally desist when they're not medicalized* (most turn out to be gay & lesbian) I believe another is est 75-95%

...Whereas only 0-10% desist after they've been medicalized (with "blockers") in early childhood. It's gay conversion therapy. Anyone who looks at the numbers would know that. I'm working on this topic for an article. I had to read like 800 pages of APA guidelines.
All these people are liars. They are terrible terrible human beings.

The truth will come out sooner than later. People will eventually see what's going on."

WeRiseUp · 19/12/2018 11:05

How did it all get this far?

It is so obviously there is something seriously wrong with these people - their ethics, decisions and ambitions. What is their fucking vision for the world? Replacing all LGB, autistic and gender nonconforming people with a generation of sexless, sterilised, mutilated, lonely adults doing beauty pageants and performances of sex stereotypes until their bones crumble and their vital organs fail?

I wish for health, happiness and rich variety for human beings. I cannot compute this sterile and sickly vision.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/12/2018 11:10

hat is their fucking vision for the world? Replacing all LGB, autistic and gender nonconforming people with a generation of sexless, sterilised, mutilated, lonely adults doing beauty pageants and performances of sex stereotypes until their bones crumble and their vital organs fail?

Well i would assume there's a few different things at play.

  1. a large bunch of people over the age of consent with child like genitalia.
  2. Autism being cured, and thus no more burden on society, not to mention not being able to reproduce.
  3. A reduce in Homosexuals and they are pressured into being Tranmen.
CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/12/2018 11:11

A final solution if you will, making sure people fit into boxes or are eventually wiped out.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/12/2018 11:12

I honestly think this is the idea, and this is why so many governments across the world have backed this.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/12/2018 11:14

It feels like being stuck in a dystopian novel, honestly. Like some day someone is going to look back and wonder how the hell any of this was ever allowed to happen. Remember that period during which entire societies went insane and being supportive of sterilizing kids and turning them into simulcrums of the opposite sex was viewed as the best litmus test of how progressive a person or an organization was?

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/12/2018 11:15

The truth will come out sooner than later. People will eventually see what's going on

Doubtless they will. So let’s try to make that happen before our laws are changed. And before an entire cohort of young people are sterilised, mutilated and grow up with no boundaries.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 19/12/2018 11:17

It's not really like 1984, it's a bit like Terry Gilliams Brazil.
Most people in that film are not aware they are oppressed and are happy to go along with it.

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/12/2018 11:19

Someone a while back pointed out it's as much ‘brave new world’ as 1984.

I’ll add Fahrenheit 451 into there as well...

Interesting times indeed

WeRiseUp · 19/12/2018 11:21

To me it is like a Hieronymus Bosch painting.

LangCleg · 19/12/2018 11:22

I’ll add Fahrenheit 451 into there as well...

If you listen to Jennifer Bilek, there's a lot of Altered Carbon hiding in there as well.
