Pixars "Brave" is the story of a transboy

Saw this on reddit.
gaychristiangeek.blogspot.com/2012/07/bear-bow-and-boy-queering-pixars-brave.html

1950's logic: Tough and Brave=Boys, Helpless and weak= Girls
2018 logic: Tough and Brave=Boys, Helpless and weak= Girls
Nothing has changed.

When shows like Wonder Woman, Xena, and Buffy came out, it showed girls that women can be brave, tough, and hero's. This was a change in the right direction. Now in 2018, if a girl is brave or tough, then she isn't a girl, but a boy. Apparently, we are going back to telling girls that only boys can be the hero, only boys can save the world, and that girls have to be the victim so they can be saved by the hero. I mean, gee, can't understand why so many girls hate being girls and wished they were boys 🙄

Sure! Xena warrior princess was clearly a cult straight icon of the 90s on the grounds that there has always been a deliberately unresolved question around whether or not the trans man Xena and Gabrielle were in a heterosexual relationship. Grin

This makes me want to find the writer and scream expletives at them for a few minutes. How dare they try to take away strong women from us.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/12/2018 18:38

Mulan was trans too apparently...

WombOfOnesOwn · 04/12/2018 18:44

Pixar was heavily criticized for having the most boycentric movies in all of the Disney universe (seriously, of the 10 Disney films with the lowest percentage of women's spoken lines, half are Pixar films -- they do NOT believe in letting women speak!).

So of course when they finally did release their only girl-centric movie, people would go out of their way to say that girl was a boy, too.

Funny how you never see people say Aladdin is really a princess. It's really only female characters who get retroactively transed, even though they're claimed to be MTF or FTM alike (supposedly-MTF characters are thought to have transitioned prior to the viewer seeing them, while supposedly-FTMs are thought to be still in "egg mode" before coming out as trans).

Yet you'll almost never see it implied in these "headcanons" (people's imaginations about characters) that a male character was born female, or that he really wants to become female.

It's just like all the rest of the trans movement: somehow, it ends up restricting female space while giving males the ability to be more free than ever.

This is so infuriating.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 04/12/2018 18:53

They’d have a field day with Prisoner Cell Block H (now that was a TV classic)

ShockedHorrored · 04/12/2018 18:55

Oh fuck off. I love Merida. She’s all fucking woman. Stupid fucking fuckers.

SophoclesTheFox · 04/12/2018 19:18

So that's where Brave and Stunning comes from!

That article is a pretty neat illustration of how extremely non-progressive this type of trans narrative is. Girls don't shoot arrows and they are all desperate to get married!

It does beg the question of how the author decided that Merida was the only not-out trans character in the film. If it's not about stereotypes, then how do they know? For all they know, her Dad longs to be a woman, hopelessly trapped in toxic ultra-masculinity and desperately unhappy inside (also a trans narrative). Also, he wears a skirt Grin (I'm allowed: I'm Scottish)

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 04/12/2018 19:23

Aw crap. I used to shoot arrows as a kid and teen. I must be a boy then...

FWRLurker · 04/12/2018 19:41

What the actual fuck.

StealthPolarBear · 04/12/2018 19:42

Was her mum a trans bear then

StealthPolarBear · 04/12/2018 19:43

Oh shit am i a trans bear

PositivelyPERF · 04/12/2018 19:45

They’d have a field day with Prisoner Cell Block H (now that was a TV classic)

So many transmen in that. 😂

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 04/12/2018 19:46

I really feel like I’m a small winter creature. One the hibernates.

TheClitterati · 04/12/2018 20:01

Sometimes these fucktards must simply be ignored. They feed off being taken seriously.

RebelWitchFace · 04/12/2018 20:31

Stupid, bonkers, blow smoke up my arse, the weed was cut with bath salts bullshit!!

Take your hairy, dirty hands off Merida!!

boldlygoingsomewhere · 04/12/2018 20:33

There was me thinking Brave was a lovely film exploring mother/daughter relationships in the teenage years - the concerns of the mother wanting the best for her daughter based on societal norms, while her daughter rails against these expectations...

Obviously, I’ve had it wrong all these years. Hmm

RollerJed · 04/12/2018 20:33

StealthPolarBear 😂

Jasperthecat2 · 04/12/2018 20:40

This pisses me off so much.

There was an artist who transed a load of Disney characters - which included Merida with short hair and mastectomy scars. FFS.

RebelWitchFace · 04/12/2018 20:46

Despite being a grownup I loved Brave so much because I identified with Merida a lot. Does that mean I actually identify as a boy?

AspieAndProud · 04/12/2018 20:52

So that's where Brave and Stunning comes from!

That’s the title of the sequel.

AspieAndProud · 04/12/2018 20:54

My favourite character is Angus.

Angus is a cow’s name. If he identifies as a horse should respect his life choices.

Tackytriceratops · 04/12/2018 21:05

Not exactly on topic but I love this meme

Tackytriceratops · 04/12/2018 21:06

Fuck I can't post it; too many messages today.
