"@UniOfHull As a Trans student, can I ask why I'll soon be forced to attend lectures in a theatre named after somone who doesn't believe I am a woman???? "

"Just heard @UniOfHull, the Uni I study at and love, may name a building after somebody who has been condemned by many trans people as transphobic.

This could be a big mistake and I’d urge they reconsider.

Trans women are women.
Trans men are men.
Trans rights are human rights. "

Buckle up - here we go again!

am open and honest, without offending anyone

I believe football-sized bollocks is the term du jour?

Oblomov18 · 01/12/2018 18:53

I hope that trans women will never be accepted as women. Because they aren't. Nothing to do with Jenni Murray and Hull university.
I suspect most people feel the same.

ChewyLouie · 01/12/2018 18:54

Rufus , I wouldn’t be saying this to a mature teenager but the poster comes across as a first year uni student with little life experience coupled with lots of anger and growing up to do. I expect one day they may look back on this and feel ashamed by their outburst 😉

OlennasWimple · 01/12/2018 19:41

football-sized bollocks - like the ones that Millwall were shown to be lacking earlier this year? Wink

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 01/12/2018 19:58

chewy

Thats fair enough

It was a lovely post of yours though Smile

reallyanotherone · 01/12/2018 20:17

I don't hate the trans community.

If people want to conform to the gender stereotypes normally associated with the opposite sex, then let them crack on. I have absolutely no problem with it.

However, assuming the socially constructed sterotype of gender does not affect your genotype or physiology. Wearing a dress does not make a man a woman any more than putting my dog in a skirt makes it a woman.

scepticalwoman · 01/12/2018 20:31

If this miserable moaning student can do as much for woman as Jenni Murray has done over many years then they'll be a useful addition to society. Until then.....

Tanith · 02/12/2018 09:16

You need to widen your volcabulary, Godloveseveryone1. The posters here are not demonstrating “hate”; they don’t “hate” this silly, immature student.

They are showing disdain for the student’s remarks.

Oliversmumsarmy · 02/12/2018 09:21

As a Trans student, can I ask why I'll soon be forced to attend lectures in a theatre named after somone who doesn't believe I am a woman

But you have said it yourself. You are not a woman you are trans. You can’t be both.

"Copernicus called and you are not the centre of the universe"

Grin

Congratulations to Jeni on the wonderful honour for her. Well deserved.

NeurotrashWarrior · 02/12/2018 09:35

Excellent Oliver's!

Clear logic.

Jenni has shown great respect to trans people but simply calls a spade a spade.

This is not hate.

This is very self serving given the decades of journalism Jenni has done centring on real difficult feminist issues.

I remember listening to her talk about the harsh realities of the menopause in '91 when I was a teen. I hadn't even started my periods at that point.

FamilyOfAliens · 02/12/2018 09:54

I totally feel you. I took classes at the Robert Zemeckis Center at USC despite not liking his film ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’. Thanks to your tweet I now see that my human rights were violated. I feel so used and empty

Love this tweet Grin

Went to the Hull University Women in Leadership and all the women having lecture theatres named after them were there. Jenni Murray in person ! A very interesting event and was also taken with Virginia Bottomley as a woman who has achieved a lot. (Not about politics but speaking up.)

Katvonblackdeath · 03/12/2018 21:53

Some of the students had a protest (naming a lecture theatre after someone you don't agree with somehow takes away human rights.. who knew... )
This tweet tickled me. I'm sure you had loads of chats with grandpa on Jenni Murray and how she took away human rights from trans people. Sure you did poppet.

aroundanothercorner · 03/12/2018 22:01

I bet his grandfather didn't use transgender as the term of reference. Times have got better.

There was no protest just before/outside the event.

nauticant · 03/12/2018 22:32

Because my grandfather served his country in a war nearly 80 years ago, a university building shouldn't be named after someone who's put decades of work into women's rights.

Not very hot on causality is he?

BettyDuMonde · 04/12/2018 00:04

My nan was in the WAAF during WW2.
She was born in 1919. Women didn’t have penises then and they still didn’t have penises when my nan died in 2004. My nan would’ve happily pointed this out to both Jack and his grandfather.

Nan would also point out that WW2 conscription was sex based.
As in, sex observed at birth, by your mam, at home. Not assigned by doctors, unless you happened to be able to afford them.
Nan’s family, my family, couldn’t.

Fortunately back then, we were working off the old-money biology system, not this new-fangled sex-spectrum stuff, so even illiterate farm labourers could tell boy babies from girl babies.

Nan would happily tell Jack and his grandad that there were no transwomen in the Women’s Auxilary Air Force.

She’d also happily tell Jack to bugger off because his dead grandad has absolutely fuck-all to do with a university acknowledging the achievements of contemporary women.

Bubonicpanic · 04/12/2018 06:30

Students seem to manage to drag transphobia into everything.

Man born in 1920s flys plane in non transphobic manner to the Mediterranean.

Well that's very clever of him indeed. You do seem very proud indeed of that. Do you think the lack of transphobia was the reason the war was won too?

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 04/12/2018 07:18

However, assuming the socially constructed sterotype of gender does not affect your genotype or physiology. Wearing a dress does not make a man a woman any more than putting my dog in a skirt makes it a woman.

Nicely put.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 04/12/2018 07:20

Kat, that tweet was so full of non-sequiturs it was impossible to follow.

A person's grandfather fought in WW2, therefore he wasn't transphobic, therefore Hull University shouldn't name a lecture theatre after a famous alumna?

Huh?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/12/2018 14:37

I wonder if the student catechised his grandfather properly on every single question you need to answer properly to be classed as not transphobic.
I fear not.

FaithFrank · 04/12/2018 14:48

They might back down

Jenni Murray: University of Hull to review theatre name change amid trans row

A university will review its decision to name a lecture theatre after Dame Jenni Murray after protests over her comments about transgender people.

The University of Hull's plan to honour the BBC Radio 4 host sparked a backlash from staff and students against an article she wrote in 2017.

GreenFirefly · 04/12/2018 14:56

I heard they were re-considering too. I hope they don't back down. I wanted to go to the event last night but it was badly timed for me :(
So who to email to support the original decision?...
There must be others of you in the area - I'm feeling very alone being GC. Some were trying to pin a generational divide on Jenni Murray's stance.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/12/2018 14:58

Is it too much to hope that if Hull uni gives in to misogynistic bullying, whoever they choose to replace Jenni, and the other alumni mentioned in that link will have a Spartacus moment?
