Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why do we separate things such as toilets by gender?

I understand the reasons for separating things by sex. Penis vs vagina. Common sense. But what are the reasons for separating by gender? I cant think of a single one. Perhaps we should petition for all things to be mixed gender on the basis that there is no point. Then watch the general public go apeshit over it. Atm I dont think the general public really understand the consequences of having gender being the definitive over sex.

Define what you mean by GENDER

Bigonesmallone3 · 21/11/2018 15:50

What should it say on the doors?

StealthPolarBear · 21/11/2018 15:55

So they know wehrr to put the lip liner and blusher

AncientLights · 21/11/2018 15:59

There are no reasons for separating by gender. You might just as well separate by political beliefs or musical interests.

irnbruforlife · 21/11/2018 16:00

I dont mean shit by gender because i think its nonsense. But what the translobby mean by gender. Which is the spectrum thing they keep harping on about, where do you draw the meaningful line between the male gender and the female gender? You cant really imo so I think a concentrated effort to get rid of separated gender/sex stuff like sports and toilets and wards towards one nice big mixed lot in the hope that the general public would see that the bat shittery for what it really is. The tras have got away with so much because they are doing it little by little, creeping their way in. Lets just help them to their end goal in the hope that the public would be so aghast at it and realise a lot sooner that its nonsense and demand a return to separated sex spaces. Basically saying that TWAW and should be allowed access to female only spaces is nothing short of mixed sex spaces anyway. Lets just call it what it is.

Unfortunately institutions like the Ambulance Service have now ordered that all their facilities are to be mixed gender and mixed sex

TheMinorityEngineer · 21/11/2018 16:07

Mixed gender doesn’t mean anything.

Mixed sex is what it is.

Call it what it is.

It’s not mixed gender, or gender neutral, it’s MIXED SEX.

Melamin · 21/11/2018 16:09

Well, if gender is a spectrum line on the genderbread unicorn, then you need a spectrum of toilets with red at one end and violet at the other.

Problems solved.

Melamin · 21/11/2018 16:10

People can then use the toilet they assign themselves to.

BertramKibbler · 21/11/2018 16:11

Surely everything started off being split by sex not gender

hdh747 · 21/11/2018 16:13

Watch the fights for the loo at the end, 'I'm more womanly than you, no I'm...'

ErrolTheDragon · 21/11/2018 16:14

The only thing I can think of which currently is sometimes split by sex where gender would be better (if needed because of different styling skills) is hairdressers v barbers. Cheap short back and sides for women who want it?

Knicknackpaddyflak · 21/11/2018 16:15

The sole point of separating by 'gender' is that it provides the ability for men to enter women's spaces.

Melamin · 21/11/2018 16:15

Actually, using the rainbow is not the best idea as you need the pink Barbie crinoline lady (for everyone to fight over)at the one end and the muddy GI Joe (empty except for puddles )at the other, of course. Grin

TheMinorityEngineer · 21/11/2018 16:16

Unisex clothing I dig.

AssassinatedBeauty · 21/11/2018 16:20

Clothing often needs to be sex-specific though due to the different shapes of women compared to men.

"Unisex" clothing to me means clothing for men that also happens to fit a particular shape of woman. And usually in colours that are stereotypically considered masculine.

AnyOtherPerson · 21/11/2018 16:21

Knicknack has hit the nail on the head. Separating by gender allows predatory men to say they’re women and access women’s spaces. Pretty sure it’s those men, some of whom are in positions of power, are driving this.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/11/2018 16:21

Not much clothing is truly unisex, because women and men tend to have different body shapes.

LikeDust · 21/11/2018 16:25

I imagine a lot of people would end up soiling themselves because they couldn't be certain if their gender matched the one on the toilet door.

I'd be completely fucked.

TheMinorityEngineer · 21/11/2018 16:38

I wa thinking more unisex styling of clothes rather than shape actually.

irnbruforlife · 21/11/2018 16:42

My argument is I suppose that the tra's are going to effectively get mixed sex things legitimised under the disguise of Self ID. First by having just GRA TW, then its looking likely anyone who wants to self ID can have access. The only way to stop this happening is a public outcry. But the drip drip drip effect and cleverly avoiding the specific words mixed sex has avoided a public outcry. Maybe we should just help them to their end game in the hope that the public will cotton on and be suitably outraged.

I agree OP.

I think "Mixed Gender, Single Sex!" would be a good slogan.

irnbruforlife · 21/11/2018 16:49

mixed gender, single sex is brilliant :D

I’m gender critical but when it comes to toilet facilities, there are some places where individual cubicles with sinks that could be used by people of either sex would be a good idea.

It would reduce queues for the ladies for a start.

Groups of toilets that people use depending upon the gender they feel undermine the privacy and dignity of women’s toilets.
