If VS follow through on their capitulation and subsequent bootlicking of the TRA community and send a trans model down the runway, once the men leering over the models realise, things will get interesting quickly.

Really? I bet they absolutely won’t.

AspieAndProud · 10/11/2018 21:33

I think Alan Cumming’s perfume ad did a lot more to challenge gender stereotypes.

WoodpeckersAreWood · 10/11/2018 21:33

Id Love to see this, in the interests of gender bending and general diversity stuff.

I reckonn perfume ads are also going to be an early pioneer. They love inexplicably kooky but also sexy.

But it will get weird for the target market. Wonder what will win out. I agree that they are probably a natural market for the stuff they sell, but I doubt it is a big enough group to sustain the business.

I would be delighted if all objectification informed by the male gaze was played out by exclusively other males.

This exactly.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 10/11/2018 21:50

"I would be delighted if all objectification informed by the male gaze was played out by exclusively other males.

Victoria's Secret, Playboy, beauty pageants, pornography, the lot."

This.

Theweasleytwins · 10/11/2018 21:55

Reminded me of of the trans contestant from americas next top model several years ago

Yep. With nobs on. Ladynobs obvs.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 10/11/2018 22:11

yeah, as someone said upthread, sexy underwear is a gender thing. transwomen can fill their boots.

FloralBunting · 10/11/2018 23:03

FFS. Why would I give a toss if the entirety of the flimsy under garments industry was advertised by feminine looking blokes? It might underscore even more forcefully that the images presented are complete bollocks.

Yes, absolutely. I also love it when someone on FWR expresses my thoughts more eloquently than I could.

Cross posting my agreement! Grin

abbsisspartacus · 10/11/2018 23:54

The only issue I have is they won't have plus size but they will accommodate a dick Hmm plus size models have been trying for years men only have to ask once

TheHarpySings · 11/11/2018 06:55

I’m with the commenters above- I’d be happy for all sources of Male objectification to be provided by men. If VS’ runway show was 100% Transwomen I’d be fine with it.

sackrifice · 11/11/2018 07:01

Yup. This would be a fabulous outcome. One wonders if their pay rates will go up of course...

Deliriumoftheendless · 11/11/2018 07:04

I think this would be a very interesting way to challenge some men’s ingrained homophobia.

But I suppose women’s underwear will still be seen as sexualised whoever models it.

Labradoodliedoodoo · 11/11/2018 07:06

Tricking a heterosexual man into sex and a trans person modelling for VS are not the same thing

eurochick · 11/11/2018 07:18

I'm not sure where they would hide the meat and two veg in the tiny pants, but I'm all for it.

Batteriesallgone · 11/11/2018 07:57

Split crotch euro Grin

If you can’t hide it flaunt it!

Jezebelz · 11/11/2018 08:41

But I reckon that the average bloke who watches the shows as entertainment will not be impressed when one of the hotties he has been lusting over is actually a man.

You do realise that feminism is absolutely not about making sure the lustful needs of the average bloke are met?

Quite the opposite in fact.

FermatsTheorem · 11/11/2018 08:47

Of course men lusting over women isn't what feminism is about. But it is what sells underwear.

Hold the front page: aims of lingerie marketers and aims of feminism not in perfect alignment shocker. Who'da thunk it?

Jezebelz · 11/11/2018 08:58

Feminism chat is a strange place to have posted this.

Plenty of things for women to be outraged about but an average bloke accidentally lusting over a transgender model isn't one of them.

Deliriumoftheendless · 11/11/2018 09:02

Possibly it’s because we’d see real transphobia from men over this rather than discussions of women’s rights. And then it would be interesting to see how Twitter trans activists respond to that.

KatVonGulag · 11/11/2018 09:16

I think trans models will increasingly get focus in the modelling world. They've often got the height, "boyish" frames etc. Perfect clothes horses I guess.

I thought the comments on the BBC report were interesting. Are the emperor's new clothes slipping just a little more?

FermatsTheorem · 11/11/2018 09:38

Not really. The fact that the lingerie business is in fact about the male gaze, and about persuading women to internalise that male gaze, is of relevance to feminism. As is the fact that most heterosexual blokes on the whole are not into penises, regardless of the owner's gender presentation.

I do think the comment I would be delighted if all objectification informed by the male gaze was played out by exclusively other males absolutely nails the issue. Yes please. Perform femininity all you want - it can become an all male pastime, and I'm more than happy for men to have that (happier in fact than other male bastions where women are kept out because those all-male environments are in fact where political and business deals get struck).

Nettlescoop · 11/11/2018 11:20

I agree , in an ideal world, women would abandon Victoria's Secret and their damaging portrayal of women, allowing transmen to step into the perceived opportunity if they so wish.
