Colleague - recently declared non-binary - has just had a moan about how much they hate diversity at work that only focuses on women, but doesn't non-binary people like "themself".

It's taking all my self-control not to point out that their natal sex is NOT EXACTLY INVISIBLE, so the vast majority of the population would automatically and unthinkingly categorise them in the "diversity for women" pot, ie part of the group that should be increasing its presence in our workplace. SO 'THEY' IS ALREADY INCLUDED.

Sigh.

Ah but being a boring old woman isn’t Brave, Stunning or Special enough is it? I swear about 90% of people who define themselves as trans have just seen the opportunity to let their narc side out and run with it

UpstartCrow · 08/11/2018 11:13

Tell them to put together a proposal for HR instead of just complaining and creating a bad atmosphere which achieves nothing.

PineappleSunrise · 08/11/2018 11:14

I think in this case it's just pure, internalised misogyny and homophobia. They actually married their girlfriend not long ago - apparently being a happily, legally married lesbian couple both with great jobs and no friction at work about their "gender presentation" is just not good enough.

non-binary is the most thundering narcissism. They think they are sooooooooooooooo special when they're just what most of us are without feeling the need to make that everyone else's business.

I actually hate the non-binary bullshit even more than I hate trans ideology in general.

ToeToToe · 08/11/2018 11:54

Sod it - let's all declare ourselves non-binary. No one takes women remotely seriously - not until it's men saying they're women, that is. I've had it with this shit.

Declaring 'themself' non-binary won't stop 'them' being the victim of sexism, discrimination or sexual assault. Women can't identify their way out of oppression.

PineappleSunrise · 08/11/2018 11:56

THIS. I also hate the way they're throwing all their fellow female-bodied people under the bus -

"Oh, you may be a lame woman who deserves whatever marginalisation she gets, but I am cool and special and deserve to be taken seriously."

Maybe we should all start wearing these, after all they're in the suffragette colours....

FFSFFSFFS · 08/11/2018 12:34

But they're not being discriminated against because they're non-binary because no one knows what the fuck that is.

Juells · 08/11/2018 14:09

'After years working here I'm still fighting to be seen as the expert on who I am'

It's so conceited, isn't it? As if all other people have to worry about is listening avidly to someone boring on about 'who they are'.

Theinconstantgardener · 08/11/2018 14:23

Wrybread
Well spotted! Im getting one. Thatll cause a stir at my work - possibly!

LondonPainter · 08/11/2018 14:25

I’ve posted this here before - many times! - but I can’t help thinking of it when I hear about non-binaries: www.feministcurrent.com/2017/07/28/special-millennials-special-please-tell-im-special/

AncientLights · 08/11/2018 14:28

After years working here I'm still fighting to be seen as the expert on who I am

I wonder what the job is that needs the worker to be an expert on h**self and not on the job they are doing? I know I only have a glittery pink lady brain, but I can't understand this at all.

Noqont · 08/11/2018 14:32

Maybe we should all start wearing these, after all they're in the suffragette colours...

Depends where the funding is going to for the sale of these. Be careful. You wouldn't accidentally want to fund something like stonewall.

Badstyley · 08/11/2018 14:53

Boohoo! I’m so oppressed because nobody thinks I’m special enough. Newsflash love, people who don’t see you as special aren’t going to start just because you slap a label on it, in fact they’ll probably just think you’re an attention seeking nob.

Non-binary = start acting like a whinging, entitled prick > everybody avoids you because you’re acting like a whinging, entitled prick > look how oppressed I am, nobody speaks to me. No, that’s not oppression, that’s you being an arse and everybody else seeing it and acting accordingly.

DeRigueurMortis · 08/11/2018 15:00

Non Binary....

I always think of N.B. (Nota Bene) to "note well" that this person is a self declared narcissist who has a deep seated urge to identify themselves out of the ordinary through pronouns

nellieellie · 08/11/2018 15:37

I think it’s incredible that “non binary” people think they suffer discrimination. If you create an imaginary category, why should everyone allocate you resources and build special toilets? What about if I declare myself “Dog woman”. It’s disgusting, wherever I go, it is impossible to be served food in proper adult portioned dog bowls. Nor, can I get special Dog Woman Poop areas. It’s just getting me down. I’ve needed special counselling, but I’m so depressed and all the non Dog Woman entitled people are just Dog Woman phobic. Boo hoo.

Trinity1976 · 08/11/2018 15:45

One of the most bizarre things is that these people thing they are smashing gender stereotypes when they are doing no such thing. They are actually buying into the stereotypes by describing themselves in relation to gender at all.

Trinity1976 · 08/11/2018 15:45

think not thing

Ereshkigal · 08/11/2018 16:01

I actually hate the non-binary bullshit even more than I hate trans ideology in general.

Me too. But if they bring in self IDed legal recognition for non binary people I will absolutely be in the queue. Everyone is non binary.

Badstyley · 08/11/2018 16:19

What purpose would non-binary actually serve though? It’s a meaningless term, only useful to those who already have privilege. I can’t see as a woman what good it would do me at all. I don’t want unisex bogs or changing rooms and I already present in a GNC way. Also presumably biological sex would need to be noted for the purposes of healthcare, so what’s the point? It’s just a back door way to make sex segregation disappear, and that’s no good for women.

KatVonGulag · 08/11/2018 16:36

I don't get why transexual people support this. To be trans under the WHO guidelines I'm pretty sure you have to have Gender Incongruence... so feel you are the opposite sex. I don't understand how this even fits in at all.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/11/2018 16:50

I'd want to get this person to explain what they meant by non binary, and what sort of focus they needed at work.

The stonewall definition, for reference, is:

'NON-BINARY
An umbrella term for people whose gender identity doesn’t sit comfortably with ‘man’ or ‘woman’. Non-binary identities are varied and can include people who identify with some aspects of binary identities, while others reject them entirely.'

Badstyley · 08/11/2018 16:53

Everyone then. Utterly meaningless.
