Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Famous undeclared GC people?

Who do you think might be gender critical on the quiet? David Baddiel has just posted something about polyamory on a twitter thread about the doxxing of a GC uni professor. I think he must see this is all Pomo nonsense. Obviously we have Graham Linehan who’s been a compete star.

But are so many other intelligent, critically thinking famous people out there, especially the comedians, there must surely be some who are desperate to call out TRA bullshit. Where are they all hiding?

ProfessionalBarren - I agree.
Comedians earn their living by making controversial statements whilst keeping people on side, they have no excuse not to say something about this debate. In fact I don't know how they can possibly not comment on someone like Alex Drummond, the script's already written for them.

cockblocker · 27/10/2018 13:44

Tanith - I wouldn't force anyone, I don't think that's what we're suggesting here.

ProfessionalBarren · 27/10/2018 13:57

I hadn’t thought of it from that perspective Tanith and as cockblocker says the question wasn’t asked with a view to forcing anyone to do or say anything. It just highlights what a dreadful situation this has become that such a discussion could raise concern that people might be targeted. People must be able to speak up about this.

I’m surprised by Prof Alice Roberts - thought she would be GC but I’ve seen TRAs tweet her for likes .

lynmilne65 · 27/10/2018 14:17

What is GC ?

ProfessionalBarren · 27/10/2018 14:18

Gender critical.

OP posts:
BeyondAdultHumanFemale · 27/10/2018 14:19

I'll cry if AR comes out as full on TRA! 😭

Prof Robert Winston was bad enough. Spoke at a conference I was at for an hour about plasticity of the brain and the impact of assumed gender norms influencing it, then turned around and referred to "born in the wrong body" during the Q&A :(

SirVixofVixHall · 27/10/2018 14:25

Yes I am surprised by Alice Roberts too. Although I do understand that as women in particular face a storm of abuse for speaking out, silence can feel like the most sensible short term option. Why more MPs aren’t standing up for women is a lot more baffling.

I don’t quite understand how this silencing has been so effective, yet it has. I don’t tweet much on this either, solely becaause I am afraid of the consequences. I don’t see TRAs afraid of speaking out for their agenda. Look at Harrop, an NHS Doctor, yet he is totally unafraid of voicing his hatred of women.

ProfessionalBarren · 27/10/2018 14:33

Exactly SirVix I was just pondering that. The idea that in a different thread we could ask who the pro TWAW celebrities are, and then worry that these people would be at risk from GC people is laughable.

Qualified doctors and scientists should not be supporting damaging anti scientific nonsense which has no basis in reality and no supporting research findings. This behaviour is unprofessional and they should be held to account for holding irrational beliefs.

MPs should also be held to account for failing to protect entire sections of society.

The police should be held to account for failing to address terrorist offences and rape and death threats.

Women represent half of the electorate, yet they're happy to throw us and our children to the dogs.

citiesofbismuth · 27/10/2018 14:37

Their inaction will come back to haunt them just as it is to historic abusers.

They are on the wrong side of history and the population will know this and will know about them.

Cowards

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 27/10/2018 14:42

Yes, misogyny still gets a pass in a way racism or homophobia doesn't. It's bloody depressing.

Love this phrase from biology....ideological flat earth equivalent minority they really are. I've been thinking for a while that the twaw line is actually much more difficult to swallow than arguments from flat earthers or creationists or climate change deniers because the shape of the planet or evolution or climate change are not obvious, you actually have to look at the science. Sexual dimorphism of mammals is obvious, not just in humans.

I really don't get why more scientists haven't spoken up.

And I still don't understand why trans people can't embrace who they are and be trans and proud.

placemats · 27/10/2018 15:05

The He for She campaign was a roll my eyes moment and it' certainly died a death post MeToo.

I honestly don't believe that ANY celebrity believes that TWAW.

raisinsraisins · 27/10/2018 15:16

Look at what happened to Alison Moyet - it’s a big risk to go against accepted left wing views now. Think Boy George is on Terfblocker. JK Rowling has liked some GC comments. She posts a lot about left wing anti-semitism too. As does Boy George as he refused to boycott Israel in his tour.

ProfessionalBarren · 27/10/2018 15:32

I couldn’t believe what happened to Alison Moyet. Yes, perhaps celebs have ‘learnt their lesson’ from the various AWA social media pile ons.

India Knight and Marina O'Loughlin... Both tentatively declaring themselves (this was after the "womxn" row last month)

Famous undeclared GC people?
wopbamboo · 27/10/2018 15:41

I have seen Amanda Abbington tweet something that was Verging on GC and I would be very very surprised if Caitlin Moran wasn't also.

hellraising · 27/10/2018 16:42

Philip Pullman recently tweeted about it, but didn't declare any sort of side from what I can remember

trumpdump · 27/10/2018 16:46

Do Piers Morgan and Katie Hopkins count?

ScienceRoar · 27/10/2018 17:12

Jo Brand. She stuck up for Germaine Greer.

www.theguardian.com/world/2018/oct/10/women-avoid-transgender-debate-fear-reaction-jo-brand-germaine-greer-feminism

pigsknickers · 27/10/2018 17:31

I was just going to ask about Jo Brand! That's good to read, I think she's fab.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/10/2018 17:41

I'm interested in the thoughts of people like Malala. I'm sure she gets it, and she's obviously very brave too, yet she hasn't said anything either way I think?

I think she'd be wise to stay well out of what might seem to her a very first-world problem. I think she's going to be too important a campaigner on education for all children including girls worldwide to be wounded in a twitter war re gender in the West. Afghanistan is shutting down girls education again ... I'd much rather she was thinking about that tbh.

ProfessionalBarren · 27/10/2018 17:42

Jo Brand has definitely stuck her toe in. There’s no way she isn’t GC. I think Pullman was pretty poor on this, did the whole ‘bad behaviour on both sides’ tripe IIRC.

OP posts:
ArkeNOTen · 27/10/2018 19:04

FGS don’t ‘out’ any of them! I think if they are liking GC posts they are preparing themselves and doing watchful waiting. It’s up to them when they weigh in.

From the Me Too think I think we should have learnt how difficult it. An be to speak out against the tide witness lots of people being blamed for not saying what had happened to them earlier. I know it’s not quite as personal but nevertheless ...

HandsOffMyRights · 27/10/2018 19:20

I'd hope Jennifer Saunders. She posted something the other day to do with feminism and it gave me a hint. By proxy I hope that Dawn French, Kathy Burke (friends with James Dreyfus) and Lumley might be).

I think Richard O'Brien who brought us the original Sweet Transvestite is GC too.

I've given up on Caitlin Moran, Grace Dent, Sharon Horgan and co.

If JK spoke out, maybe Emma Watson would re-think her naivety.
