Sorry if this has already been posted but I saw this from Herts Police FFS!

They are asking for victims of historic sexual abuse to come forward, yet colluding in the fallacy that this man is female Confused Angry

Another man headed for a woman's prison?

"Mentioning Parkhurst is clever. Gives the game away without risking being accused of deadnaming."

It in no way mitigates the utter stupidity of calling this male rapist a woman.

BettyDuMonde · 24/10/2018 11:25

Cooper has previously been held in HMP Littlehey.

Littlehey is a specialist male sex offenders institution, home to 12 transwomen.

There is no equivalent institution in the female estate. Presumably, we will have to build one, if all these inmates go on to get GRCs?

I thought victims/survivors were meant to matter in our CJS?

Bench Guidance requires that the court 'respect' the gender identity of the accused.

In the case of T Woolf who was found guilty of assaulting Maria Machlaclan at Speakers Corner, the victim was compelled by the court to respect Woolf's identity as 'transwoman' and use 'she/her'

One hopes that Victim Support is taking urgent and significant steps to protect victims of rape from being compelled to call the abusers 'women' and use she/her etc.

Deathgrip · 24/10/2018 11:46

So how are other victims supposed to come forward when their identity when committing their crime is concealed? Unacceptable.

Needmoresleep · 24/10/2018 12:36

Unless he has changed his surname the Mail has deadnamed him. I assume their lawyers are content. Or they have decided being sued would make an even better story.

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/10/2018 12:40

Well I think the police ought to dead name him. They say they want people to come forward if they've been abused by Carrie no matter how long ago - what if you knew this person by their old name and didn't click? The police could lose out on further evidence against him.

hackmum · 24/10/2018 13:23

I notice the Hertfordshire Mercury report on this story refers to him as a "transwoman", which is slightly better:

www.hertfordshiremercury.co.uk/news/hertfordshire-news/transgender-hertford-woman-jailed-historic-2140911

I hope he is sent to a male prison. But the two other troubling issues are how this is recorded in the crime statistics and, as Deathgrip says, that it could act to stop other victims coming forward. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if that was the point. Why else would a sex offender suddenly decide he was really female?

Francis Crook executive director of the Howard League for Penal Reform "said that she was worried that ‘some men with a history of extreme violence and sexual violence against women have found a new way of exercising aggression towards women’.

‘These men are not transitioning because they like women and want to be a woman, but in order to exert a new kind of control and dominance over women, a sort of infiltration."

Claude Knights (safeguarding expert retired after 15 years as head of Kidscape)
on sex offenders who transition and are afforded the opportunity to change their name and hide their history as a consequence & recent case of "Christopher Noble, 32, transitioned to Christyl Knight while behind bars for keeping a stash of over 4,000 vile pictures and videos of kids as young as six months old"

“Allowing these individuals to hide a secret past is a dangerous practice.”
“Anyone who’s fuelled the vile trade in indecent images of children and therefore contributed to their sexual abuse should not be allowed to change their name.”

The HERTS Police link appears to have been taken down. I think this is the sort of thing that should be sent to MPs to ask for their thoughts on how this helps the victim, how they can hope for other victims to come forward as name and sex of offender has changed, how will this crime be recorded?

Sarahconnor1 · 24/10/2018 14:50

The HERTS Police link appears to have been taken down

They have deleted both the Facebook and Twitter posts that refer to a women being convicted. Wonder if they repost factually correct information.

thereallochnessmonster · 24/10/2018 17:56

Bloody good that the links have been taken down. The police need to think seriously about how to report cr8mes like this. Bloody bonkers calling cooper a woman.

ProfessoressWoland · 24/10/2018 18:05

Bloody bonkers calling cooper a woman.
I guess it was a choice between calling Cooper a woman, committing a hate crime by 'misgendering' them, or stating that "a person has been sentenced to prison for sexual offences against a child".
What a world.

thereallochnessmonster · 24/10/2018 18:07

@needmoresleep - so what if he has been deadnamed? He’s no more a trans woman than I am the pope.

As soon as he raped someone with his penis, he lost any right to call himself a trans woman. IME. And it’s common practice to list previous names or aliases of criminals. The article does go on to call him her.

thereallochnessmonster · 24/10/2018 18:08

Professor - why not just call cooper a trans woman?!

ProfessoressWoland · 24/10/2018 18:09

As soon as he raped someone with his penis, he lost any right to call himself a trans woman.
What does the law say about this?

thereallochnessmonster · 24/10/2018 18:11

That’s a good point. I have no idea, Professor. Just seems common sense to me.

ProfessoressWoland · 24/10/2018 18:13

Good point, monster, but it sounds a bit tabloid-y in a police statement.

ProfessoressWoland · 24/10/2018 18:14

Calling him a transwoman, I mean.

thereallochnessmonster · 24/10/2018 18:35

Why? It’s factual.

I wondered, who the hell would let him be alone with their 7yo dd? Was he a trans woman when he assaulted her?

Sarahconnor1 · 24/10/2018 19:06

As soon as he raped someone with his penis, he lost any right to call himself a trans woman

Under self ID he absolutely is a trans women. I have no problem with it being report as such, it just shows how far this can be abused.

Having said that these are historical crimes potentially committed under his male identity and my concern is the issue around 'dead naming' might prevent further victims coming forward.

thereallochnessmonster · 24/10/2018 19:31

@sarahconnor - So he has no GRC, he looks like a man, he has a history of raping and assaulting female children - how the hell is he acting lik a transwoman?!

Absolutely shows where self-Id fails and can be abused.

LangCleg · 24/10/2018 19:38

Raping someone with your penis is gender. It's gender-based power relations right there.

Any fool who can't see this should be allowed nowhere near prison policy.

CriticalCondition · 24/10/2018 20:12

It was suggested upthread that it is unlawful to deadname someone.

I think it is important to be clear that there is no law against deadnaming in and of itself.

There are laws against harassment but that is something different. Deadnaming is not itself unlawful.

Sarahconnor1 · 24/10/2018 20:18

So he has no GRC, he looks like a man, he has a history of raping and assaulting female children - how the hell is he acting lik a transwoman?!

But under self ID he is a trans women. This is what self ID will mean.

I'm not saying I agree, I'm pointing out the flaws of Self ID.

ohello · 24/10/2018 21:43

Yes, it will. One imagines a point in the future, under self-ID, where the majority of rapes will be committed by “women”.

Not sure why because I should have known, but this hit me so hard.
