Keeping it classy, M&S.

Anyone use the M&S live chat successfully? I've waited to live chat and before anyone answered they ended the chat saying it's not available.

It is so much nicer to pretend that porn is all sparkly, with its stars, like old Hollywood , only slightly more risqué. Wink wink nudge nudge. Pink tin of fruity fizz .

amandadecabernet · 24/10/2018 11:17

Yes, many people seem to prefer that.

Dragon3 · 24/10/2018 11:22

Oh God, I'd forgotten about the peanuts.

It's true AdeC, we've all got to eat. But I guess that, in the case of M and S, it's an easy boycott for me. If the Coop sells porn-branded goods (how TF is this even a thing in mainstream shopping?!) then, yeah, I would complain but have to continue shopping there. And totally agree that women should only do whatever is feasible WRT consumer decisions.

It's good to come across small ways to reduce DC's inevitable exposure to normalised porn. We often take a slightly longer route to avoid driving past a shop with a highly sexualised silhouette of women in the window. Every time, I wonder why it's okay for this to be part of DC's environment.

Also don't understand the pile-on.

amandadecabernet · 24/10/2018 11:37

Dragon3 when I was small tv comedy seemed to involve a lot of pestering women for sex and on one sitcom there was an older woman who was always pestering her husband for sex. (He clearly found her repellent, that was the joke. And yet they remained married.) And the MIL jokes about how awful older women are, yet I loved my grandma. I remember thinking she wasn't like the MIL jokes and in my home I didn't see anyone pestering anyone for sex.
I knew something about men/women/relationships was being manipulated for humour but it was a fiction that everyone seemed to buy into. It made me feel alienated from my culture, and that's what eventually radicalised me.
Children take it in.

You may find it ugly and demeaning but they are enjoying themselves and using their free choice to buy them.
Anyway I can't wait for a slippery nipple when I'm no longer pregnant and I'm definitely going to try a porn star martini

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 11:44

Jaxtellerswife
You may find it ugly and demeaning but they are enjoying themselves and using their free choice to buy them

And it’s our free choice to complain and call out rape culture when we see it

amandadecabernet · 24/10/2018 11:46

Jaxtellerswife um yup, no one is stopping you. Thanks for your input.

OP posts:
VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 11:47

That's what gets me about it really. Seems to want to take away the right to choose.
Never had a slippery nipple before, what are those like?

OP posts:
MorrisZapp · 24/10/2018 11:49

The right to choose is surely down to the marketing bods at M&S. Why can't they call their delicious drink a passion fruit cocktail? The drink isn't offensive (though their canned mojitos are shite), it's the name.

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 11:49

No one is stopping you - but people are saying they're emailing in to complain, that's presumably because they think they should be pulled from sale in m and s? Which kind of is trying to take the choice away.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 11:53

- but people are saying they're emailing in to complain, that's presumably because they think they should be pulled from sale in m and s? Which kind of is trying to take the choice away.

There are a lot of adult sex toys not available at M & S too. Do you feel that making them available only at sex stores is limiting your choice too?

Dragon3 · 24/10/2018 11:53

Verb and Jaxtellers it's legal. Nobody is stopping you. Hard to see why anyone would want porn normalised when it is so clearly linked to violence against women and girls. But there ya go.

That's a really interesting point about feeling alienated from your culture amandadecabernet. I remember feeling very weird about those Kenny Everett dancers on at tea time. You've described the feeling. Yes, kids take it all in. They really do.

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 11:53

"The right to choose is down to m and s" - what so women don't get to choose what they like or want to do then?
Sounds like "shush, you're oppressed, we're trying to make it better for you by taking your right what to choose away."

amandadecabernet · 24/10/2018 11:54

MorrisZapp because speaking your own degradation is fun.

VerbeenaBeeks yeah your choices are definitely limited, but not by feminists.

OP posts:
Dragon3 · 24/10/2018 11:54

So write and tell M and S how important it is that they continue to sell porn drinks.

CharlesChickens · 24/10/2018 11:54

No one is trying to take away a cocktail flavour. The name of that flavour is another issue. Agree passion fruit cocktail is the obvious choice.

ifonlyus · 24/10/2018 11:56

what so women don't get to choose what they like or want to do then?
Sounds like "shush, you're oppressed, we're trying to make it better for you by taking your right what to choose away."

Really? You feel oppressed because you can't buy a pre-mixed cocktail with a (to some) offensive name in every food retailer in the UK?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2018 11:56

Would people who enjoy a premixed cocktail enjoy it significantly less if it had a non-sexual name? Most classic cocktails manage without.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 11:57

taking your right what to choose away."

There you go being ridiculous again. We also get a choice in what we are confronted with in a family friendly store. It’s a numbers game for brands. So I guess if you’re so upset that your choice to buy rape culture products that glamorise porn at M & S, instead of having to do so in a bar or pub, might get taken away, you should go stock up on these drinks and make sure women’s bodies keep getting used in degrading ways.

amandadecabernet · 24/10/2018 11:58

VerbeenaBeeks 'what so women don't get to choose what they like or want to do then? Sounds like "shush, you're oppressed, we're trying to make it better for you by taking your right what to choose away."' Women hear 'shush' a lot. I'm actually participating in a discussion here because I have a point of view. I'm responding to your point of view. Adults can share their views, no one is shushing you. I disagree and am providing evidence for my own pov, which is different.

OP posts:
pennydrew · 24/10/2018 11:59

It is ironic that someone who thinks women shouldn’t get to choose if males see them naked or perform intimate exams on them, thinks objecting to rape culture is limiting her choice to support it. Because it’s obviously really unfair and limiting her freedom to want a cocktail sold at a family store renamed 😐

amandadecabernet · 24/10/2018 12:01

pennydrew it's empowerment fiction.

OP posts:
PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 24/10/2018 12:06

I’m trying @dragon3

amandadecabernet · 24/10/2018 12:06

I guess if you buy into empowement fiction you then can say that I too am very powerful by saying I'm going to take your winky drinks away. But of course I have no desire to limit anyone's choices, I just don't buy into the idea that I must avert my eyes if I don't think rape culture is fun.
And I'm sure that sounds humourless but really I don't gaf anymore, they say that about women no matter where you draw the line, the fact that you could imagine you can draw a line and say something is unacceptable is unfun.
VerbeenaBeeks if you scroll back through this thread I've been shushed loads of times (see my comment above re tin hat etc). I'm not shushing anyone. I don't agree, I don't consent but that doesn't limit your choices.
