Keeping it classy, M&S.

Anyone use the M&S live chat successfully? I've waited to live chat and before anyone answered they ended the chat saying it's not available.

Do they recommend you drink it or spit it out?

Nightjane297 · 24/10/2018 05:48

FINALLY sensible responses to one of these ridiculous non problems!!! Basically, get out more OP

Notacluewhatthisis · 24/10/2018 06:55

I'm interested in the motivations of those selling the product

The motivation is to make money. Rude names make cocktails famous. No one making the drink hopes a woman knocks back a couple and makes a porn or acts like a porn star.

I really don't get the 'I don't want to see the words porn star when I am in M&S' . How do you people live in the real world. There's words I hate, things I don't like seeing. When I hear or see them, I just move on. You have managed to survive with them being on bar menus, I am sure you can just not look at it in M&S, if it's going to upset you so much.

feathermucker · 24/10/2018 07:01

Jesus Christ, really?!

It's an established cocktail name. It's not a bloody feminist issue.

pachyderm · 24/10/2018 07:16

You're right OP. And it's up there with "Pimp My [whatever] being normalised, Playboy stationery for little girls and unwanted dick pics becoming part of young women's dating landscape. I'm surprised you're getting such a hard time.

Thismummyruns · 24/10/2018 07:39

Thanks for the heads up! Can't wait to try

hugoagogo · 24/10/2018 07:50

I get it.
Porn isn't and shouldn't be normal, Pornstars are not fun.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/10/2018 07:56

I'm with you OP.

MorrisZapp · 24/10/2018 08:05

Slow handclap for anyone who thinks puttanesca is normalising porn as much as pornstar is.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 24/10/2018 08:15

@lurkinglizzy never a truer word spoken in jest

Dragon3 · 24/10/2018 08:21

Ugh. I don't want my kid seeing porn references in M and S. No need for normalisation to this extent.

It's perfectly legal. But I'll take my business (and child, with all their various clothing needs) elsewhere.

Dragon3 · 24/10/2018 08:22

No need for normalisation at all in fact.

SuperstarDJ · 24/10/2018 08:26

Where do you do your weekly supermarket shop Dragon? Most of the big supermarkets sell bottles of pre-mixed cocktails incl porn star martinis. Am assuming if you’re no longer going to buy your child clothes from M&S you’re no longer going to buy them good from supermarket stockists?

SuperstarDJ · 24/10/2018 08:27

*food not good

Dragon3 · 24/10/2018 08:46

I don't take my kid to the supermarket but they sometimes come to M and S. That's the difference in our case. Not sure what my supermarket sells, but you are right, I should check. I would be surprised to see porn references at the Coop.

I suppose we could just avoid the foodhall. But M and S isn't so ubiquitous that we can't easily avoid it. So I will. They have annoyed me with their unisex changing room policy and this is enough to make me ditch them altogether.

Other people see it differently. There are bigger fish to fry. But there is no need to support creeping normalisation of porn if I can avoid it.

Dragon3 · 24/10/2018 09:04

This indeed nails it:

The normalisation of porn fuels rape culture

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 09:40

I love pornstar martinis, not as much as I love Sex on the Beach though. Smile
They've been around forever. It's not a new thing, and it's not just m and s.
Not particularly aimed at women either, they're for all adults. As for women drinking them through a straw and posing to the camera, maybe they're just having fun and taking pics while out with their mates and not give one shiny shite what people think.

VerbeenaBeeks · 24/10/2018 09:43

What's more worrying right now is the fact I now fancy Sex on The Beach and it's only just gone half 9 in the morning Grin

florafawna · 24/10/2018 09:49

Relax and drink up! Wine

rosamore · 24/10/2018 09:50

The first porn star martini I ever had was called a "Debbie Does Dallas" and came with a penis straw and playing card with a woman in underwear as decoration. I ordered it at dinner with my In-laws (to avoid saying sex on the beach, actually!). I didn't know about the porn movie. Mortified doesn't even cover it at the time, but it made a funny story!

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 09:56

Who are all these patronising people I never see on these boards giving grief to the OP like it’s AIBU?

I’m amazed at the idiotic and pro sex-work responses you’ve got on a FEMINIST BOARD.

The normalisation of porn fuels rape culture.

We have a fucking serious problem in society with porn and I would of thought parents would be more concerned than most- average age a child watches porn in uk is 10. Their first sexual experience will be watching porn. And you all think we should glamourise it? Wtf is wrong with everyone here?

‘ this isn’t the hill I want to die on’ well the OP didn’t say that? What kind of a nonsense unintelligent response is that? We can think about multiple issues people!

OP, you are right to be concerned and I will also be writing to them. Normalising porn is a huge problem and it affects women more than men- I shouldn’t need to explain why but with some of these comments who the fuck knows.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 09:56

VerbeenaBeeks oh gee what a surprise

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 09:57

But there is no need to support creeping normalisation of porn if I can avoid it

hellojim · 24/10/2018 10:01

Obviously M and S didn't create this cocktail or come up with the name, but they have made the choice to sell it. Why can't they call it PSM (they manage it for a BLT)if they have to sell it at all. I think it's tacky and unnecessary.

FWIW I think M and S are trying to appeal to a wider or different audience, there's not a day goes past when there isn't a celebrity endorsement of their food, clothes and cosmetics.

amandadecabernet · 24/10/2018 10:04

But there is no need to support creeping normalisation of porn if I can avoid it. Yeah, pretty much this.

Nightjane297 er, have you rtft? Most of the replies are along the lines of 'shut up women, back in your box' with a side of 'if you're going to do x you must also do a to z'. Nope, just having a discush. Do what works for you.

feathermucker this is where we disagree, I think normalisation of porn is a feminist issue.

Notacluewhatthisis 'There's words I hate, things I don't like seeing. When I hear or see them, I just move on. You have managed to survive with them being on bar menus, I am sure you can just not look at it in M&S, if it's going to upset you so much.' That sounds painful. I'm doing something different.

Dragon3 or let them know you don't like it and why you think it's wrong and then shop where you want. We don't have to go straight to boycott on everything and tbh I think most women have enough on their plate already. Everyone needs to eat. :)

pachyderm yeah, I'd forgotten about 'pimp my _', that is gross.

MorrisZapp yeah, that's a head-scratcher. Isn't porn star' sort of 'whore' with a glossier finish? For now I'll limit my interest to words in my native language, I think it's good enough. :)

hugoagogo ItsAllGoingToBeFine thanks.
