Gather LM is saying that they had to give up the previous post because they left the area (to go to Goldsmiths) but they're now standing for the women's officer post in Lewisham Deptford CLP. Voting is on Sunday, apparently.

Yes, its important to have clarity about this.

LM's solicitor's letter was sufficient threat for the school to understandably back down especially if they sought guidance from Stonewall etc.

I've always wondered who / which TRA organisation had assisted with this.

It was portrayed in the press as a lone young person who took on the school in a 'David & Goliath' type battle.

In reality, its the trans-lobby which is the 'Goliath', a secondary school in Kent would not have been in a position to take this on.

examples of how this was reported at the time:

It annoys me how this is portrayed as having "sued her school". It makes it sound like there was a judgement and legal precedent.

I wonder if in reality she complained on a message board that it wasn't fair that she couldn't wear a skirt to school and this attracted the attentions of the TRAs who have used her to push an agenda ever since. Her "trans mum" maybe.

R0wantrees · 27/10/2018 10:46

Its clear that many in the transgender community have what will be instant access to international support via social media platforms for the grievances they may feel are due to 'transphobia'.

The nature of the support seems to be primarily litigation guidance and online pressure.

ABitCrapper · 27/10/2018 12:34

It's interesting that's there's a comment in the DM article that claims to be from a parent from LM's school - and the comment basically says that LM was only sent home to change on one particular day as the top LM wore was inappropriate, and contra to the "office wear" code. And nothing to do with it being the girls uniform or not.

FloralBunting · 27/10/2018 12:41

A suggestion that a prominent AWA retconned their backstory? Surely that would never happen!

R0wantrees · 27/10/2018 14:34

Based on a number of interviews that LM gave. It seemed that LM turned up in school uniform which was contrary to the rules of the school and also asserted their 'right' to be called by a new name, preferred pronouns and have access to the female spaces.

This seems a (deliberately?) confrontational way to go about seeking support for 'social transition'.

BettyDuMonde · 27/10/2018 14:38

I don’t think it was even school uniform, just the girls dress code for 6th form instead of the boys (usually described as ‘attire suitable for the office’ - which in practice means smart clothes for all, with the only real difference being boys are expected to wear ties and girls have the option of skirts ). LM could’ve looked at having the dress code equalised for all, rather than demanding a special exemption, but that’s trans ‘politics’ in a nutshell, ain’t it?

HuckfromScandal · 27/10/2018 14:47

Another thing that has just occurred to me.
LM has bleated-on told us, time and time again, that their parents didn’t support them, chucked them out etc....
And yet the photos in the huff post article in 2016 are the same wallpaper as pics taken in the very recent past. So obviously has been living in the same place? They must get a lot from their PayPal account to keep making that happen? Cynical — moi?

placemats · 27/10/2018 15:10

I've seen female sixth form students wearing a trouser suit. However, the male students are bound by a strict dress code. My belief is it's better to encroach upon the females than it is the males.

Males need to expand the bandwidth of masculinity and that should also include dress codes.

GiantKitten · 27/10/2018 16:15

Lily was just one of 1000 pupils at the school?

Thank god for that. Imagine several of them.

Someone certainly likes the limelight.

Latinista · 27/10/2018 18:24

6th formers get asked to go home and change all the time when they turn up with skirts too short/tight or jeans too scruffy, camouflage/army gear etc. Boys and girls. No one needs to “sue” anybody (don’t think we do this in UK anyway?)

Bonions · 27/10/2018 20:30

bettydumonde Magdalen berns had a good video about someone across the Atlantic protesting uniform rules for themselves rather than everyone

I’m on my way- this is what the email I was sent last night said about the vote:

You must have at least 8 weeks continuous membership of the Labour Party and not be in arrears, both to stand as a GC delegate and to vote in the elections. These will take place by secret ballot.

Eligible women members can self nominate at the meeting tomorrow.

Only women who are GC delegates may stand for the post of CLP Women's Officer.

Two strong candidates have already declared their intention to stand for this post: Gill Hart and Lily Madigan (both of Brockley ward). If there are more than two eligible women for this nomination, then the vote will be by preferential ballot.

It's great to have such enthusiasm for women's representation in our CLP. We look forward to coming together in the spirit of sisterly solidarity and respect to collectively choose our delegates and CLP Women's Officer for the year ahead.

Thanks. What's a GC delegate? How are they decided?

Surprised there isn't an 8 weeks residency clause. Not surprised, but it would make sense considering its a local position.

FekkoThePenguin · 28/10/2018 14:21

Too much to hope (gender critical)

PearsOfWisdom · 28/10/2018 14:21

May the force be with you!

sorenipples · 28/10/2018 14:24

Interesting perspective given she has never been lewisham deptford CLP women's officer.

It's like the constituency is irrelevant to her. Just what I look for in a local politican.

Technology fail there

I also like that our favourite socialist now won't be seen at any event without corporate sponsorship.

GC is General Committee - some CLPs have ‘all member’ meetings and some have GC only (the GC delegates represent their branches, and take the branch members views to CLP).

All CLPs and branches have an EC (Executive Committee) who do the grunt work of organising.

Those CLPS that use the GC system are usually the ones with the biggest membership - it’s ruddy hard to find cheap, accessible, meeting rooms for groups of 100 or more.

Sometimes, it’s just that the CLP went GC at some point in ancient history and no one really knows how to change it back (or can be bothered).

As Lewisham clearly has the numbers to run separate BAME (Black And Minority Ethnic) and Women’s forums, they are probably GC due to high membership numbers.

OlennasWimple · 28/10/2018 14:36

Don't forget that at the time of the uniform debacle the school statement said that they were also supporting LM's younger siblings. But, y'know, why should anyone care about those confused and upset young children transphobes who set up nasty Twitter accounts to make LM look bad?

R0wantrees · 28/10/2018 14:38

Apologies for the naive question but is it usual for the men (mxn?) to abstain from voting for women's officer?

sorenipples · 28/10/2018 14:42

Thanks Betty.

I found this

Yes you can also self define as BAME and disabled.

I'm also coming to the conclusion "democratic socialism " is like those countries which put democratic in their name.
