Trump seeks to redefine definition of gender

“Sex means a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth,” the department proposed in the memo, which was drafted and has been circulating since last spring. “The sex listed on a person’s birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute definitive proof of a person’s sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence.”

surprised I've not seen anyone here cheering for trump and this policy! this is what women want right?

This thread is hilarious. Trump apparently says the sky is blue too. Fake News!

Rozie appears to have a problem calling out Blair White.

Talk about priorities.
-> Trump destroying the Iran deal, which might set the Middle East aflame, worse than the Iraq war whose consequences we still suffer: TRAs: crickets.
-> Trump reneging on the 1980's agreement that kept all kinds of rockets (like Pershings) out of Europe, thus heightening the risk of an ultimately nuclear showdown in Europe that would all incinerate us to unprecedented levels:
TRAs: crickets.
-> Trump reneging on Obama's 'gender trumps sex' edict thus setting federal US law back to 2014 levels:
TRAs: 'Trump denies our right to exist!!! We are under threat of anihilation!!!'.

Dear TRAs: A nuclear war will deny you the material ability to exist. Rolling back the 'gender trumps sex' order just denies you the ability to appropriate women sports scholarships if you are male.
Not being able to appropriate women's scholarships and compete in women's sports is clearly not the end of the world, let us keep things in perspective.

Invoking Godwin's law here - if Hitler was vegetarian that doesn't mean all vegetarians are nazis. It's bad logic to say that someone agreeing with a bigot on one issue means they agree with their entire philosophy.

UpstartCrow · 23/10/2018 10:27

@Togawa
Women's legal rights and protections depend on there being a legal definition of terms, including words like 'sex' and 'woman'. Its not reasonable to expect women to support their own legal erasure.

If you actually read the other thread you'll learn that Trump is not 'redefining' sex; he is replacing the legal definition of sex to how it was originally, before it was changed by the Obama administration.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/10/2018 10:28

JK Rowling made climate change happen too. It's because she (something about causing so many books to be printed, and also being too opinion-y, the cheek of her!).

Again, though, has everyone read Germaine Bunbury's treatise on foraging for screenshots? Cause if not I'd really recommend it.

The bloody reason we got Trump was Americans being sick of identity politics. The indignation that Republicans are doing what Americans elected them do because the Democrats made such an unacceptable mess seems to go right over the id pol nit wits heads.

deepwatersolo · 23/10/2018 10:30

What is the 'you did this' stuff?
You made Trump define sex?

Personally, I believe Posie Parker's billboards are to blame. Trump would never use a dictionary.

GulagsMyArse · 23/10/2018 10:30

JK Rowling made me burn my toast and loose my keys.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/10/2018 10:31

I accidentally put my phone in the fridge one day when I was putting away some cheese. Rowling's fault, obviously.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 23/10/2018 10:32

This thread reminds me of .

Trousered · 23/10/2018 10:34

It's ok, Dawn Butler MP: Shadow Women & Equalities is arranging hypnosis for us all so we will be chanting twan soon.

That's democracy for you....

Trousered · 23/10/2018 10:34

TWAW not twan!

HilltopTractor · 23/10/2018 10:35

J K Rowling created a fantasy world in her head, she shared it with us.

Some people struggle with fantasy and reality.

Barracker · 23/10/2018 10:36

This is what happens when the truth is up for grabs and the supposedly compassionate and reasonable gang won't touch it because it shows them up as having lied, a lot, recently.

The truth is left going begging, gets grabbed, probably with a nefarious agenda, by others.

Facts don't care who speaks them. In this case the moral vacuum on the left abandoned those particular facts long ago. It's not as if the facts of life were going to lie dormant because you didn't like them.

Still, I wouldn't feel too smug, OP. there seems to be a disproportionate number of flashers, paedophiles, rapists and murderers who apparently subscribe to your world view. You might want to start there instead.

HilltopTractor · 23/10/2018 10:37

Dawn Butler is trying to tell us how she and others stated up with ideas that TWAW.

FloralBunting · 23/10/2018 10:40

That video is fab!

Togawa · 23/10/2018 11:21

Fine, swap the word gender for sex in the title. I posted this before I had my coffee. I should have used sex.
I do find it interesting how you've all jumped to conclusions about who I am, what I believe and where I stand on trans issues.
I came here only to seek clarification that mumsnet are on the same side trump here. I've no interest in debating the issue or anything.
ciao

OP, on the subject of biological SEX being immutable and vital to distinguish from feelz, I think you will find the majority of people on the planet agree with Trump. Not just those pesky feminists.

Togawa · 23/10/2018 11:36

why would I feel smug about this? the trump administration is intent on rolling back the rights of so many groups. I'm having a hard time thinking of anything else I would be happy to admit agreeing with him on.

also, lets not forget 53% of white women voted for him. as a white women, I don't think we get to be smug about this

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 23/10/2018 11:38

Do you need a venn diagram to help you with understanding?

RiverTam · 23/10/2018 11:40

and yet, Trump may well prove to be right in making the definition of sex clear in law and unable to be confused with gender, which is better for women. Thus doing something that no UK political party is prepared to do, least of all Labour.

Instead of gloating that some women might agree with a single policy of Trump's, why not feel despondent that no UK party currently gives a shit about women's rights.

You're just looking for a stick to beat the feminists of MN with. What kind of a person does that make you?
