Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is this an about-face from The Guardian?

Well fuck me I wouldn't have expected to read this in the Guardian.

I mean, don't get me wrong, it still focuses on rights for transwomen and calls both sides of the debate "toxic" (of course) but it also says:

..."But misogyny too must be challenged. Gender identity does not cancel out sex. Women’s oppression by men has a physical basis, and to deny the relevance of biology when considering sexual inequality is a mistake. The struggle for women’s empowerment is ongoing. Reproductive freedoms are under threat and the #MeToo campaign faces a backlash. Women’s concerns about sharing dormitories or changing rooms with “male-bodied” people must be taken seriously. These are not just questions of safety but of dignity and fairness."

Thanks Red.

I think that's what we call DARVO isn't it?

RedToothBrush · 17/10/2018 22:00

Remember to shout REVERSE FERRET when appropriate.

Newsofas · 17/10/2018 22:01

Having seen the advert in the paper today I’m changing my bank from Barclays. I left the guardian months ago and now subscribe to the Times.

NotBadConsidering · 17/10/2018 22:01

Posted this on the other thread:

Article by Susie Green, obsequious review of Butterfly in the last 10 days. I’m not giving them ANYTHING until I see some proper balance. What that editorial needed was a strong line or paragraph admitting they haven’t taken editorial balance on in it the past. When I see some of their obviously GC writers be allowed to write articles, with comments opened, I’ll view them as a fair place.

TimeLady · 17/10/2018 22:02

Thanks Red.

Hilarious.

ToeToToe · 17/10/2018 22:02

I love REVERSE FERRET

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/10/2018 22:05

They can fuck right off

Yup

Too little much too late

NewWomensMovement · 17/10/2018 22:18

Just a thought about stitching women up. In Scotland they rushed through a change to the legal meaning of female at the llth hour, when people weren't looking and were busy getting their consultations in. It would be interesting to see what is tabled in the HoP at the moment. The fuckers in Scotland completely ignored the consultation too - it was just a charade of democratic process.

Waspnest · 17/10/2018 22:23

At best that article is a (very) grudging admission that there may be two sides to the story so yes the Guardian can fuck right off.

But Red very interesting to see that the complexity of the GRA consultation has been raised in the House of Lords.

ToeToToe · 17/10/2018 22:24

Fuck - someone posted on David Davis thread last night that there is a cabinet member determined to pass self ID. Still trying to work out what his/her motivation might be. But none of it will have the safeguarding of women and children in mind, I guarantee it.

Freespeecher · 17/10/2018 22:27

ToetoToe
I think it's just about getting something, anything, through the Commons (and getting what they imagine will be approving headlines) as they know the SNP, Labour and the Lib Dems won't oppose them.

HumberElla · 17/10/2018 22:29

I feel very suspicious about the motive behind this sudden volte-face. Its not diverting my attention for one second.

Floisme · 17/10/2018 22:33

Well it’ll take a lot more than that to atone for not covering the David Challenor case for nearly a week, or for that dreadful Caroline Lucas piece. Or before they see another penny of my money.

However.

A lot of my workmates read the Guardian and this article might just give me an opportunity to start a conversation.

I want to win this.

(And it’ll piss Owen Jones right off.)

So much as it sticks on the craw to say it: thank you Guardian.

RedToothBrush · 17/10/2018 22:34

I think it's just about getting something, anything, through the Commons (and getting what they imagine will be approving headlines) as they know the SNP, Labour and the Lib Dems won't oppose them.

Yep, I think the Commons numbers favour Self ID once the whip is considered.

SPOFS · 17/10/2018 22:36

I wonder if there is another Karen White type story around the corner? Maybe that explains the sudden change? The British public will not be fooled twice.

LangCleg · 17/10/2018 22:36

Yep, I think the Commons numbers favour Self ID once the whip is considered.

This is true. But I'm beginning to wonder whether long grass is in the best interest of the Tories with regard to the next election.

TwistedStitch · 17/10/2018 22:37

God the hysteria about this coming from TRAs on twitter. A very mild article that merely mentions women have concerns and apparently the Guardian is now a transphobic hate rag. Harrop is saddened Sad. Nothing but complete capitulation is acceptable to them.

LangCleg · 17/10/2018 22:39

I wonder if the Grauniad is aiming to distance itself from the Stonewall excesses? Position itself as an honest broker but really not?

If I were Ruth Hunt right now, I'd be looking for potential escape routes. Because if it comes to sacrificial lambs, it won't be any of the penis owners at Stonewall that are offered up, will it?

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 17/10/2018 22:47

Yes, the testeria is palpable - like this rational, well thought comment:

Is this an about-face from The Guardian?
IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 17/10/2018 22:53

This is what I call a day late and a dollar short.
I don't care though cos I was never a Guardian reader anyway ( except via links on here) Always thought it was full of wank.

thenightsky · 17/10/2018 22:58

I won't be going back to reading or buying the Guardian anytime soon

GRA debate aside I still haven't forgot about Cologne

Yep. This.

LorettasBox · 17/10/2018 23:46

I love how in that tweet the Guardian admitting that women have the right to have their concerns taken seriously = absolute hatred of trans people.

I mean, that's the level of batshittery we've been dealing with.

ToeToToe · 17/10/2018 23:54

It's interesting that gender critical women are "omg, the Guardian have done a REVERSE FERRET" - when really all it is, is a balanced editorial. A bit of back-covering, no doubt. For when Just in case they find themselves on the wrong side of herstory history.

Twitter TAs to the Guardian: "OMG You literally want us dead"

Honestly, I despair.

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 00:02

Owen Jones @OwenJones84
A relentless media campaign against trans people, relentlessly demonising them, has left trans people distressed, hurt and afraid.

Please fill this in to support giving trans people the rights they deserve. You'll change lives. Please share everywhere

Being used as a play for poor victims of the evil media all out to get trans people, narrative.

Remember the Metro Advert and the wall of huge companies with lots of money and power....

hellandhairnets · 18/10/2018 00:06

GRA debate aside I still haven't forgot about Cologne

Me neither - Cologne was when I first realised that those who were meant to be on my side politically really couldn't give the smallest shit about women, and preserving the preferred narrative (it had been mine too) was going to be all-important. No "difficult questions" or conflicts acknowledged. It's happening all over the left at the moment. Many a blindspot.

No good ever comes of ignoring uncomfortable truths though - always better to face it head on. The issues raised by the GRA are not going to go away. The genie's out of the bottle now.
