Suffragette crafting

Anyone making anything in suffragette colours? I'd love to make a scarf but my knitting skills are sadly lacking and I'd want it quickly not by next summer Grin
I already have a handmade bracelet I made last weekend with my daughters with embroidery silks. They each made one too. A cheap and cheerful Sunday afternoon activity Smile
I've just ordered some Swarovski beads off eBay to make a necklace or bracelet that's a little fancier than the other one.
My girls are eager to make things too so am after ideas for things that are relatively cheap, easy and fun to make.
Anyone got any good ideas?

(Apologies as think there's a similar thread about colours but couldn't find it and not sure it was specifically craft related.)

Crochet? I have to confess I haven't done any for years, but I found it easier than knitting. If you make a mistake, it's much easier to backtrack and pick it up again, iyswim.

Nice bracelet!

I've just decided to plant my spring flowers using purple and white bulbs. The leaves will provide the green. Suffragette garden! I've got two planters either side of the front door which will look fab with purple and white tulips. Garden centre here I come!

Someone linked to a Suffragette college scarf, it was for children but the largest size was great for women. If you find it can you link again ?

IdaBWells · 14/10/2018 23:59

Actually I think I just found it at the Great British Baby Company unfortunately the large sizes are sold out. Any other suppliers?

PerverseConverse · 28/11/2018 18:14

I'm making a Suffragette Christmas garland with my childrenSmile
There's another two thirds to go and going to hand felt hearts from it too so need to make those.

I didn’t make it, but someone did...I bought this replica suffragette lapel pin on Etsy.

I'm knitting a scarf in women's suffrage colours right now.

BlackeyedGruesome · 28/11/2018 18:48

Crochet is more forgiving than knitting and quicker, especially if you are a loose hooker!

scepticalwoman · 28/11/2018 19:03

Plants! What a good idea. Pansies in purple and white (eyes up current yellow and white display Hmm

silentcrow · 28/11/2018 21:38

I still haven't started my scarf Blush

I did talk my mum into reading Mrs Pankhurst's Purple Feather, though, and she's busy being appalled at how things haven't really changed. And I think I set her off down the genealogy rabbit hole to see if feisty great-grandma was involved at all Smile

UpstartCrow · 28/11/2018 21:58

Garden plants, why did I not think of that!

I found a symbol that I've been using - I give you The Hairy Violet Grin - and the RSPB make a pin badge.

I work next to the museum of London and LOVE visiting the gift shop full of suffragette memorabilia.....but never pick what to buy!
(I also visit the actual suffragette museum display!)
Loving the crafting ideas 😍

everygalaxy · 28/11/2018 22:09

We have a suffragette necklace at work - I will try and take a picture tomorrow to give you some inspiration. I’ve made rosettes and a mini flag.
Got a suffragette Christmas decoration from the Houses of Parliament gift shop!

BubonicBudgie · 28/11/2018 22:10

Oh I think I need a hairy violet badge Grin

liquidrevolution · 28/11/2018 22:10

MIL is knitting me a scarf as my present. I usually dread opening her presents but looking forward to opening this one.

HestiaParthenos · 29/11/2018 18:49

I very much love the idea of suffragette gardening. Violets are some of my favourite flowers and they are also available in white. So perhaps I will do that.

There's a gift shop with suffragette memorabilia? Damn, I have no idea when I'll be in London the next time.

To think I wasted my money by getting all those Harry Potter fan articles instead ...

BertieDrapper · 29/11/2018 22:25

@HestiaParthenos yeah it's the London Museum as they have an exhibition on the suffragette movement. Not far from St. Paul's x

Catmint · 29/11/2018 22:30

I've bought suffragette colours wool for needlefelting. Just waiting for inspiration to strike.

PerverseConverse · 29/11/2018 22:45

I'm enjoying working with the felt and am going to make myself a brooch for my wool coat. Pretty sure there's some brooch pins in my mum's sewing tin that I can use. My children love making things too so it's nice to spend time together in this way.

I'll be getting my plants when I next get paid and I'm looking forward to my suffragette inspired planters.

Oooh just remembered I bought some Swarovski crystals a couple of months back to make a bracelet and haven't got round to it yet. Just need to find the bracelet elastic...

Love the plant idea. Will investigate that. I was going to crochet flower brooches on the colours.

BubonicTheHedgehag · 29/11/2018 23:29

The hairy violet is lovely!
I'm currently thinking about oversocks in these colours, for wearing at home to keep one's feet warm when slippers are not necessary. Chunky wool, knitted on 4mm-5mm needles, perhaps.

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 08/12/2018 18:53

Wanted to bump this thread with a picture of my scarf!

Fabulous! (posting under festive moniker instead of PerverseConverse).

I need to get that pin to make a broach.

TwistedChristmas · 08/12/2018 20:52

This is wrapped around the banisters on my stairs. I made it heart shaped for the photo as is 3m long. We made it in honour of all the abused women who have suffered at the hands of those men who were meant to love them.

Love these.

Here’s my attempt. Knitted mitts. Never done corrugated rib before - a learning experience.
