Is this a trans advert for foundation? Don't know what to think. Eradication of women?

My formative years were spent watching men in fabulous make-up on TOTP. I'm all for it, quite frankly.

ScrambledSmegs · 14/10/2018 18:56

Obviously women were wearing fabulous makeup too. It was the 80s, you had to wear slap about an inch thick. It was practically the law.

Earlywalker · 14/10/2018 18:58

feminism is supposed to be about knocking down gender stereotypes but now men can’t wear makeup? I might post an ad I saw for builders that dared to have an image of a women for us all to pick apart.

WokerThanWoke · 14/10/2018 18:58

It's interesting though that usually women in makeup adverts are airbrushed to fuck. Here not so much.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 14/10/2018 18:58

I think i understand where you are going with this OP

But I'm another with no problems with the advert, again if it was saying that a man wearing makeup is a woman that would be different

Dh has a virtually permanent shadow on his face, if that foundation covers it then im buying some

SnuggyBuggy · 14/10/2018 18:59

I personally don't object to this. Anyone can use make up if they want.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 14/10/2018 19:00

No problem with this, it is genuinely smashing the gender binary.

howard97A · 14/10/2018 19:01

My son was a goth 20 years ago, and I think it made him sympathetic to the problems women faced when walking home late at night !

PositivelyPERF · 14/10/2018 19:05

Sigh. Takes me back to the eighties. Adam Ant. 😍 Fanny gallops. 😁

Lougle · 14/10/2018 19:08

He's very beautiful.

Lougle · 14/10/2018 19:09

I don't like the earrings, though.

Deliriumoftheendless · 14/10/2018 19:13

Another ex 80s kid with a soft spot for make up on men.

Racecardriver · 14/10/2018 19:15

Let's be honey here. Transwomen are more likely to buy make up than your average women though aren't they? Makes sense to target them in advertising.

AnyFucker · 14/10/2018 19:16

That looks like a crap result with the foundation.

ShotsFired · 14/10/2018 19:19

The current Boots ad has 6 people in it.
5 women f different ages, sizes and physical disabilities all doing stuff in life.
And one man (not clear if trans or just drag)

Guess which one is the overtly sexualised "character" Hmm

To be fair I think the only person who had an issue with this was the OP and their issue was fairly slight!

A lot of posters here are gender non conforming and very much welcome it in men. As already said, it's only when men believe that not being stereotypically masculine automatically makes them a woman (therefore gaining them access to previously single sex provisions) that we have problems.

Earlywalker · 14/10/2018 19:24

ShotsFired what’s wrong with the ad? Haven’t women been saying for years that we’re always portrayed as the ‘sexy object’ in adverts? Is it that bad to have a man being portrayed like that?

ChiaraRimini · 14/10/2018 19:24

I have a male friend who wears makeup and looks sexy as fuck, unlike that Rimmel model. Maybe I should suggest he gets into modelling.

takemeback · 14/10/2018 19:25

@stillathing yes, not really an issue... I was just interested to see what people thought as I've read some more extreme threads on here about trans which I'm still learning about! I certainly didn't mean to cause any offence and indeed the thread has been useful.

There are more of the photoshoot on his instagram page.

He refers to himself on one as a "Californiagerl" but I'm taking that to be either ironic or in the same way most drag queens refer to themselves as "she" when in character.

To be honest out of all the people who say they are non- binary or gender non- conforming in appearance very few strike
me as actually meriting that appellation. Shay does.

Owl for example is quite a striking looking but feminine trans women, lord knows what makes her non- binary; Cara Delevigne in her tail coat at Eugenie's wedding is not in the least bit non gender confirming (as has been suggested on here- putting a very beautiful, feminine woman in a man's suit simply emphasises femininity) and sorry but always wearing jeans and a sweatshirt isn't either- no matter how vehemently protested.

Earlywalker · 14/10/2018 19:26

stillathing sorry if my comment wasn’t interpreted as I meant, that was to the op. Obviously (and thankfully) all prior replies thought the same way as me.

KittyKlawsReturns · 14/10/2018 19:29

Maybe if people accepted some men want to wear makeup, and that it's fine to do ss there wouldn't be as much gender confusion.

I agree Whitetulipofpeace

dolorsit · 14/10/2018 19:29

Martin Kemp briefly appearing on Strictly last night made me come over all peculiar.

Oh yes, I explained to my daughter that he was in my equivalent of One Direction.

Are we going to start posting pictures of men in make up

Binglebong · 14/10/2018 19:29

Good for them. I'm all for them expanding how man and women can look and stepping on stereotypes. As long as they don't stop using the word woman where appropriate for boring sexes things like tampons then I say go for it.

A potential plus point is they may improve camouflage make up to cover stubble - a lot of women want to wear it so any focus on improving it is good. Then they just need to work on wider range of skin tones.

LassWiADelicateAir · 14/10/2018 19:31

Shay is a very beautiful man when made up. A make up advert whether for men or women which was pushing a "sexy as fuck" image would put me right off buying it.
