I read lots of Ally Fogg articles in The Guardian back in the day, and what I noticed was that his sympathies shifted slowly but steadily over time, always in the direction of downplaying the feminist point of view, and fitting in with the male majority there. I wondered if it was the "tribal" influence of interacting with all the misogynistic leftie men there, and the desire to gain points with them.

Just googled Helen Belcher as hadn’t heard of them previously. Definitely trans so has a vested interest in shutting down debate.

A side issue but Gary Yonge pulling out of this because Melanie Phillips is involved is pretty pathetic too.

RedToothBrush · 14/10/2018 11:35

Is this competitive anti-journalism and pro-opinioning?

Ultimately it's not your job as a journalist to moralise. That's propaganda. Journalists speak the truth to power.

RedToothBrush · 14/10/2018 11:37

Liberal society that believes in the value of journalism also believes in the importance of free speech because without it, you can speak the truth to power.

RedToothBrush · 14/10/2018 11:37

*you can't speak the truth to power

rightreckoner · 14/10/2018 11:39

It all looks pretty tragic. All sorts of people pulling out because other people may or may not be offensive. I expect better of Gary Younge.

sausagebap · 14/10/2018 11:44

Ally Fogg is a complete idiot. He's an MRA who largely gets away with it because every now and then he'll tweet something akin to 'women...are people.'

I remember him getting pissy over a thread on here called something like 'Men who talk about how feminist they are but can actually fuck off' (he got quite a few mentions).

I've got at least some sympathy for Yonge, because he at least asked the organisers to quietly drop his nomination in a fuss-free way but they wouldn't.

I do agree though, it's not for nominees to dictate who they permit to be nominated alongside them.

We need to use the law. It's not up to me from the comfort of my internet anonymity to say to Janice Turner to take legal action but she needs to Smile.

amandadecabernet · 19/10/2018 17:09

Gosh they turn it right up to 11 straight away don't they? No nuance.
