Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 13/10/2018 21:33

Now im noyyed as my littleone used to say Hmm

LassWiADelicateAir · 13/10/2018 23:13

I see Amanda Craig and Polly Vernon are supporters.

RedToothBrush · 13/10/2018 23:19

We are over due a defamation case on this.

I'm wondering if this will be it.

FermatsTheorem · 13/10/2018 23:21

A quick check of Helen C Belcher's twitter account reveals the following self description:
"Working to be the Lib Dem MP for Chippenham, Parent, Company Boss, Campaigner, Leveson Witness, ex School Governor, joint #13 on Indy #PinkList2013 (81 in '15)."

Yup, another would be lib dem MP. I recommend people go and have a look for themselves, to put this attack on Janice in its full context.

FermatsTheorem · 13/10/2018 23:29

Though Janice's twitter feed has just given me a laugh - there's a poster with the twitter handle "Harrop ate my hamster" Grin

pombear · 14/10/2018 02:02

This is an interesting development. I think it may be another 'own goal' by TRAs.

Janice has high-standing with many other well-known and popular journos.

Who are now coming out and standing by her. (Glad to see it, as she deserves support).

Which, whether or not they agree with her stance, is spreading the issue like wildfire to people who wouldn't otherwise have been aware of what's going on.

Ereshkigal · 14/10/2018 02:50

Look at that misogynistic prick Ally Fogg falling over his own feet in his frantic need to jump aboard that bandwagon.

LassWiADelicateAir · 14/10/2018 03:34

I don't know how the share codes work but Andrew Gilligan has an article today in the Sunday Times reporting that the NHS gender clinic for children and teenagers has criticised Butterfly in relation to showing a suicide attempt.

He also quotes a source from the NHS clinic challenging Susie Green's and Mermaids figures on suicide risk.

There is also criticism of Mermaids by a professor of sociology at Oxford , Michael Biggs saying "it is highly irresponsible for Mermaids to mobilise these tragedies [the tiny number of actual suicides] for the purposes of their political agenda"

HandsOffMyRights · 14/10/2018 08:51

The Comment Awards just posted: 'The Comment Awards abhors the statement against shortlisted writer
@VictoriaPeckham
by one of this year’s judges,
@HelenCBelcher
. We are crystal clear on our commitment to celebrate a true diversity of opinion, writers, and to freedom of the press.'

Good on them and Janice shame on Belcher and Susie

Janice is mates with some notable Beeb journos

OrchidInTheSun · 14/10/2018 09:02

And Shon Fae. Fae trotted our those same suicide lies on Newsnight twitter.com/bbcnewsnight/status/819535116477329408?s=21

This makes me so angry - people using young people's mental distress to fuel their own agendas. It's shameful

kesstrel · 14/10/2018 09:03

Erish I had an exchange with Ally Fogg a while back about his misrepresentation of the literature about domestic violence, and he was incredibly patronising. Your comment made me feel a little twinge of happiness!

TimeLady · 14/10/2018 09:08

Our favourite Flying Lawyer, the fragrant Stephanie, has just waded in

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 14/10/2018 09:19

WTAF are they thinking? Samaritans guidance could not be any clearer about the risk this kind of portrayal exposes young people to and now they are proselytising it all over national media?

R0wantrees · 14/10/2018 09:26

And Shon Fae. Fae trotted our those same suicide lies on Newsnight

And Paris Lees on Question Time.

Annandale · 14/10/2018 09:32

For a horrible minute i thought Gary Younge had pulled out on the same issue. I admire his writing hugely. I'm not impressed that he has dropped out due to objections to Melanie Phillips, but at least it's not due to this.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/10/2018 09:32

Does anyone have any contacts at Samaritans to encourage them to take a look at it? They've covered high profile depictions of suicide before:

www.samaritans.org/news/guide-parents-and-carers-viewers-netflix-drama-13-reasons-why

www.samaritans.org/news/guidance-viewers-netflix-drama-13-reasons-why

By the sounds of it it'd be very useful if they could produce some guidance for this drama too.

Ereshkigal · 14/10/2018 09:37

I had an exchange with Ally Fogg a while back about his misrepresentation of the literature about domestic violence, and he was incredibly patronising.

Same, both about DV and rape (as a survivor of both). On Guardian Comment is Free. I sympathise.

FermatsTheorem · 14/10/2018 09:55

I despise Ally Fogg. Many years ago I was foolish enough to reply to one of those Guardian trawling expeditions looking for readers' views (it was a fairly mainstream feminist topic, nothing contentious, and not trans-related). They pruned my quote to take it out of context and remove any nuance, and Ally Fogg then orchestrated a pile on BTL. He's one of those misogynists who has spent years dressing his misogyny up as concern trolling (his previous schtick was a faux-concern for working class white men) - of course trans issues would be an absolute gift to him. (Does anyone have at their fingertips that marvellous Sandy draws badly cartoon with lefty dude bloke in it?

R0wantrees · 14/10/2018 09:58

Helen Belcher's press statement: challengingjourneys.wordpress.com/2018/10/13/comment-awards/

Sunday Times on 'BUtterfly' / Mermaids with GIDS criticism www.thetimes.co.uk/article/teen-transgender-drama-butterfly-inflates-suicide-risk-9ng3z22mv?shareToken=66b3126bd1f7f339bbe37a439158daaf

Prof Michael Biggs article (refrred to in Sunday Times) which analyses the misuse of suicide statistics by trans-activists with focus on Susie Green and Mermaids re Butterfly:
www.transgendertrend.com/suicide-by-trans-identified-children-in-england-and-wales/

sexnotgender · 14/10/2018 10:02

Somebody needs to sue the arse off these cretins in a high profile case. The absolute bare faced lies they tell are shocking.

I’d contribute to a legal case against them.

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/10/2018 10:26

Belcher appears to be yet another late-transitioning middle aged LibDem Transwoman.

GulagsMyArse · 14/10/2018 10:35

I think this may be another own goal!
