My MP thinks self ID is ridiculous

So I finally got a reply from my MP - I'd actually given up hope. He's Conservative, very right wing, and I disagree with a lot of his voting record. However, I wrote in the vain hope that he would actually get it. He's not on twitter and replies with actual letters so takes a while to get hold of.

I never expected him to quote the Pope in his reply (he's C of E). I haven't been able to post that part as he uses my name close by, but it made me smile.

This all makes for strange bedfellows.

My fear is that the Tories, desperate for Labour support on Brexit, do a deal.

poshme · 11/10/2018 08:24

It has to get through the lords too.

What we need is an amendment that means that inheritance of titles is allowed for trans people. The lords would block it then.

poshme · 11/10/2018 08:25

The tories won't deal GRA for brexit. It's not on the same level.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 11/10/2018 08:27

great letter - thanks for posting this (and for writing to your MP!)

fufulina · 11/10/2018 08:31

That’s fascinating - I had never considered the impact on the catholic church for self ID. All those female-born bishops!

Manderleyagain · 11/10/2018 08:38

In Ireland the priesthood is exempt from self Id. I heard it on the guilty feminist.

RepealtheGRA · 11/10/2018 08:42

In Ireland the priesthood is exempt from self Id. I heard it on the guilty feminist.

Of course it is. As is primogeniture. Anything that affects actual MEN will be excluded.

fufulina · 11/10/2018 09:47

Ah - of course it is. Men can trample all over women's spaces - but it can't possibly go the other way.

newtlover · 11/10/2018 09:49

am liking Pope Benedict
uneasy though that our support may be coming from the same school of thought that can't accept gay/lesbian/bi sexuality
the record from Hansard was interesting, about GRA being a way of preventing gay marriage- although why they thought eg 2 gay men who wanted to marry would see one of them 'becoming' a woman as a solution- can you imagine that conversation?
When we talk to the general public about this I worry too that we are trading on an instinctive disgust- ewww, men in frocks- that is only a step removed from disgust at the thought of homosexuality. In my mind there is a very clear distinction but it weakens our position if we can easily be smeared as trading on homophobia.
I feel like starting all conversations with
actually, some of my best friends are lesbians....
(I don't)

It's so blatant how sexist it all is that anything who can't see it is a fool.

I've emailed my MP about the meeting and waiting to hear.

He is a very Right-wing Tory but also quite a rebel at times and really just does his own thing. It's a very safe seat, so he doesn't have to worry about votes. I can't imagine that he will be impressed by the idea of self-ID but then again, he may come from an MRA angle and think women shouldn't have any rights. Time will tell...

R0wantrees · 11/10/2018 13:32

worth sending a copy of Kathellen Stock's speech made at The House of Lords yesterday to any MP.

The points made are key ones for legislators, politicians and policy makers:

MyMPfinallyreplied · 11/10/2018 13:39

That is my worry as well newt - I'm not sure I've ever agreed with my MP before and I feel quite uneasy that I do now. I very much doubt that he opposes the changes from the women's rights perspective.

Invisible This MP also has massive majority - definitely not a swing seat - and this would not be an issue that would lose him votes anyway! It's such a safe seat that nobody bothers campaigning in local or national elections, just a given that he'll get in again.

I emailed my MP (SNP) on the matter a couple of days ago. Got a pretty prompt response, spouting the usual guff about being empathetic and allowing marginalised voices to be heard.

wingwarbler · 11/10/2018 18:35

Great stuff :)

Sad to see though that we can have support from very right wing Tories, but who are the same people perhaps who have allowed hidden cuts in Universal Credit to severely reduce incomes for disabled people (up to £150 a month ish).

This hidden cut was ruled unlawful and discriminatory in June 18, to which the Gov said no other disabled people who receive Severe Disability Benefit would have to move to UC until transitional protection has come in, BUT since then NOTHING has been done, and disabled people are still having to apply for UC and lose money.

Definitely a case of choosing between the lesser of two evils these days :(

but I will be slightly cheered if biological women can remain in a class of our own.

WokerThanWoke · 11/10/2018 18:43

Manderley Which episode was this from?

In Ireland the priesthood is exempt from self Id. I heard it on the guilty feminist.

I'm just surprised that self-ID got a mention beyond this is such a brilliant idea, we should all support our sisters, not just our cisters type thing.

AncientLights · 11/10/2018 18:44

My Conservative MP is also anti the GRA amendments too (north of England). This all feels so very odd.

Manderleyagain · 11/10/2018 18:48

Wokerthanwoke not sure. Not the last few weeks. It was an Irish woman that said but not a v famous one here like aisling bea as I don't know who she is. Maybe an episode from Dublin? Yes surprising but it didn't sit weirdly in the show at the time.

Winterlight · 11/10/2018 18:54

‘In Ireland the priesthood is exempt from self Id. I heard it on the guilty feminist’.

Can trans women become nuns?

WokerThanWoke · 11/10/2018 18:55

Thanks Manderley I'll have a look through the episodes.

Turph · 11/10/2018 18:55

Mine was asked to attend the session on the 26th. Looks like a no to me.

OP could you copy and paste the letter you sent here? You clearly did a good job and we could all use it as a template for our own MPs.
