Transphobia v Feminism discourse...on now.

I expected more from Helena Kennedy.

doublethink · 05/10/2018 12:47

My blood pressure can't take watching it today (have emailed and called several organisations about safeguarding and female only spaces today and I'm physically shaking), so please post updates!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/10/2018 12:52

Thanks. I caught the end. Oh well.

DayMay · 05/10/2018 12:57

Fuck this.

They just made me more determined to hold the line.

No males, no lies.

There is no compromise.

Nocado · 05/10/2018 12:58

Long uncomfortable pause after Jo Coburn asked "Are TW women?" and then not answered directly.

I was disappointed how this started but it improved. One chap was gender critical and the other echoed back to Baroness Kennedy that if things need deciding on a case by case basis then Self ID is not appropriate. The NUS woman lost credibility by not sticking to the subject under discussion imo.

RubyViolet · 05/10/2018 13:13

It’s a start, just to see this being discussed on the BBC. Helena Kennedy has no idea what the issue is though, she doesn’t appear to know what trans encompasses now.

OP posts:
bookgirl1982 · 05/10/2018 13:15

The presenter seemed to understand the problems.

If the NUS president is in charge of the jess Bradley investigation then I'm not surprised all has gone quiet.

arranfan · 05/10/2018 13:17

There is no excuse for Helena K not to know. A MNetter recently mentioned that she'd written to her about these issues and received a fob off answer in return.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/10/2018 13:17

'No males, no lies.

There is no compromise.'

That sounds like something we could chant on a march.

RubyViolet · 05/10/2018 13:29

Maybe l am confusing not engaging with not knowing. The NUS spokeswoman definitely didn’t want to engage. I just felt HK was talking about/referring to pre and post surgery Transpeople not the wider group of people under the Stonewall trans umbrella.

OP posts:
DayMay · 05/10/2018 14:35

Upon reflection, they know the wider public is laughing at politicians saying TWAW and that's why they won't say it anymore.

They know the news that the Emperor has no clothes on is spreading and that politicians are now a laughing stock

They know they have a reputation for being liars and underhand.

The public is angry at politicians.

No males, no lies.
There is no compromise.

FlowerpotFairyHouse · 05/10/2018 14:45

if things need deciding on a by case basis then Self ID is not appropriate.

Abso-fucking-lutely.

DayMay · 05/10/2018 14:45

They admitted today they know this can lead to totalitarianism.

They are telling us something we know is a lie.

They fund organisations to train professionals to lie and force the lie on the public.

The bullshit that MPs and ministers who have police protection are too scared is bollocks.

No males, no lies.
There is no compromise.

'The bullshit that MPs and ministers who have police protection are too scared is bollocks.'

I agree with most of what you say but MPs and their families have very little protection. Jo Cox was murdered, and lots of MPs have kids.
I don't blame them for being scared. What I do blame them for is not coming out en masse and saying so.

DayMay · 05/10/2018 15:49

What I do blame them for is not coming out en masse and saying so.

Teresa May and her ministers can organise extra police protection then come out together and stop this.

They don't. They know this leads to totalitarianism.

They fund people to train professionals to lie. The professionals then push the lie on the public.

I can only assume this is government policy.

The government is a laughing stock.

The government has to deal with an angry public.

The government will not push totalitarianism on the already angry Brexit UK.

No males, no lies.
There is no compromise.

DayMay · 05/10/2018 16:16

I am at the point now where I believe we are in a totalitarian state.

Charliethefeminist · 05/10/2018 16:23

I believe Penny Mordaunt is gender critical but is forced to sing the song louder than anyone else in order not to lose her job. With some MPs, I definitely think it's not fear exactly, more a belief that they can do more on the inside, for example I think many will be making representations to VA, testing the water with Justine as a senior BB, trying to let PM know that they won't walk through the lobby for this legislation.

Charliethefeminist · 05/10/2018 16:25

Much of this is about policy and zeitgeist rather than law. Totalitarian, as Day says - what we are seeing today has echoes of the Cultural Revolution and Year Zero.

Badstyley · 05/10/2018 16:40

If MPs feel scared and unprotected, how do they think their constituents feel? I’m a blind single mum who is also a lesbian and I live in the capital of wokedom, yet I have the guts to speak out, hand out leaflets and talk to the public and wear a T-shirt that clearly marks me out. I’m far more vulnerable than they are, so what’s their excuse? Too frightened to rock the apple cart in case they lose their status? Craven bastards! There’s not an ounce of backbone or integrity to share between the cowardly lot of them. Which ever side of history I end up on, at least I’ll be there because I did something.

DayMay · 05/10/2018 16:44

Badstyle, they are currently a laughing stock.

They can't keep their position in a totalitarian state, they will be overthrown by their overlords ordering them to say TWAW, the lies will not save them.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 05/10/2018 16:47

I don't give a stuff if MPs are scared. I have no sympathy. Firefighters don't get to be too scared to face fires, Police and Teachers don't get to walk away from the scary stuff, you take the job and the pay you do the job or you make way for someone who will. MPs are the one group with the power to call out this shit and stand up to it, and they are the one group who will be named and shamed to future generations if they don't.

'No males, no lies.
There is no compromise.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/10/2018 16:54

I believe Penny Mordaunt is gender critical but is forced to sing the song louder than anyone else in order not to lose her job Somehow, from her repeated rhetoric and the flummery of her 'considered thoughts' I don't agree.

She has said categorically that TWAW and that is not up for discussion; spoke quite passionately at a Stonewall 'do' recently and repeats TWAW is the only viewpoint she will hear quite regularly.

And she doesn't respond to emails asking her how TWAW or how she intends to support natal women...

DayMay · 05/10/2018 17:50

Penny Mordaunt has no power.

Grin Grin Grin

Hahahahahahahahaha

No males, no lies.
There is no compromise.
