Something rotten in the city of Leeds

You may recall Leeds City Council withdrew permission for WPUK to hold their meeting in the Civic Hall in the city last Friday evening. The organisers were told only a couple of hours before it was due to start.

This morning, I believe to celebrate the centenary of some women being given the vote, there was a flag relay up to the Civic Hall in Leeds. It was a bit 'piss up in a brewery': not many people there, nobody sure what was happening etc. But the folded flag was passed from hand to hand along a chain of us women, dressed in suffrage colours.

Then the fun started at the photo call on the steps - out came the sticky back plastic black X's which we plonked over our mouths (or used our hands when the X wouldn't stick). Hopefully there will be press photos of a bunch of disobedient, uppity women behind His Worshipfulness the Mayor. One of us (not me) gave an interview to the press. We then went to the reception and stood in silent protest when the councillor, who was responsible for pulling the venue from under our feet at the last minute, gave her spiel. She told some porky pies about the real purpose of the meeting hadn't been made clear, she was corrected as it had. She was visibly rattled. Then we left for coffee and cake.

Good way to spend a Monday morning. Highly recommended.

Well done you wonderful women Star

gendercritter · 01/10/2018 22:29

Well done and thank you. They've got a nerve tbh, celebrating the Suffragettes

StereophonicallyChallenged · 01/10/2018 22:29

Another local here cheering 👊 and disgusted but not surprised at LCC.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 01/10/2018 22:32

Fantastic.

scepticalwoman · 01/10/2018 22:38

Well done to all of you. The irony that the suffragettes were able to meet freely 100 years ago but Leeds CC decided to silence modern women today.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 01/10/2018 22:41

I saw the pics on Twitter too, it looked very effective. Well done all of you!

silentcrow · 01/10/2018 22:42

Beautiful. Congrats and heartfelt thanks to my Yorkshire sisters (from over the Pennines, no less Grin).

I think there's something really powerful about these silent protests, they're such a contrast to the sound and fury and distinct lack of dignity involved in punching pensioners. I'm reminded of the singers at the post-Trump Women's March too - I would LOVE to do I Can't Keep Quiet sometime: m.youtube.com/watch?v=zLvIw8J8sWE#

Also I am fangirling a bit at Leeds Spinners Smile

AncientLights · 01/10/2018 22:47

Beupstanding thanks, I hadn't known that was there.

Love how women do protest. Silently and then polite corrections to obvious bollocks where appropriate. So effective

Yes, it's the polar opposite of TRA tactics and it's great. Well done OP Smile

7Days · 01/10/2018 22:59

That's wonderful fair play to ye

KatVonGulag · 01/10/2018 23:07

Ha! Well done lasses!

Cooroo · 01/10/2018 23:27

Well done all of you. Ashamed I wasn't there (how come I didn't know? I've been on threads, commenting on LCC Facebook page etc but missed the protest. )

jgrobinson · 01/10/2018 23:28

Brilliant!

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 01/10/2018 23:34

Thanks for that silent - gave me goosebumps!

silentcrow · 01/10/2018 23:45

Isn't it wonderful! The singer, Milck, made all the sheet music free on her website, and none of those women had met in person before - they practiced via hangouts or Skype. I sing with a women's choir myself and it's SO powerful to use your voice.

ShcfG · 01/10/2018 23:51

Inspiring, OP! Thank you!

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 02/10/2018 05:25

Is there any footage/pics of rattled lying Mayor?
