What is this organisation and why would a children's charity want to "achieve a charter mark" from them?

I found a costs page on their website, what are they charging this money for exactly? It seems like a lot.

I'm asking you, you being so knowledgeable.

breastfeedingclownfish · 27/09/2018 14:51

60 schools working towards the 'Charter'. Costs start £1250

From the LGBT Youth submission to the Women & Equalities Commission

-We recommend reducing the age at which individuals are able to apply for GRC to 16

-We support the Scottish Transgender Alliance’s Equal Recognition campaign which calls for the removal of the requirement for psychiatric diagnosis prior to applying for gender recognition

-The current wording of ‘gender reassignment’ within the Equality Act 2010 restricts protection to those who have undergone, are undergoing or intend to undergo gender reassignment. This means that transgender people who do not identify as transsexuals are not explicitly included. While an argument may be made that the coverage in regards to perception may protect them, this has not been tested and remains a gap in the legislation. We recommend expanding the protected characteristic of gender reassignment to include gender identity and expression so that non-binary identities and cross-dressers are clearly covered

So, according to LGBT Youth Scotland, cross dressers are included in the category 'transgender', including those males (adult or child) who are trans and wish to join the Girl Guides or access other famale spaces.

What qualifications are held by this organisation to equip them to be making recommendations to child safeguarding policy in this way?

OP posts:
XXaghast · 28/09/2018 12:18

Are they overseen by any sort of watchdog?

OP posts:
Invisimamma · 28/09/2018 14:45

Watchdog...OSCR is the Scottish Charities Regulator.

They'll also have to report and prove 'impact' for their government funding. I'm sure funders would welcome any information that their safeguarding isn't up to scratch?

They've had money from Children in Need in the past too.

Invisimamma · 28/09/2018 14:52

They also receive funding from a number of local authoties, NHS boards and the Big Lottery.

Alan Smyth MEP is also a member of the board of directors.

Bridgebuilder76 · 30/09/2018 17:51

It's like you lot have just discovered how charities work and that youth work is a thing. Truly embarrassing.

KatVonGulag · 30/09/2018 18:01

If shield maidens were men then why do they have female bodies.

Stupid archaeologists not caring about feelz

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 30/09/2018 18:55

You see, any fule kno weapons are for men.
So they identified as men.
Obviously.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 30/09/2018 18:57

I do youth work.
The youth work I'm involved in doesn't oversee projects where young lesbians are bullied and excluded when they say they don't want penis sex.
Or if they detransition.
Because that would be very bad.

Bridgebuilder76 · 30/09/2018 19:11

That youth work exists only in your profoundly weird imagination

bluetitsaretits · 30/09/2018 19:39

I was involved in youth work in Scotland, stopped a couple of years ago just before the 'T' firmly set in.
The chat lines were staffed by 'trained youth workers' apparently.
All youth work groups and schools in my area have signed up to this as far as I know.

LGBT youth Scotland have done some great work supporting young people in the past but the new direction is very worrying.
I need to have a closer look at the new guidance but from what I've seen there are several points that directly contradict the child protection training we received.
I have been out of the loop for a while now and was tempted to get back to it again just to try and provide a GC voice within the team. Unfortunately it's now very clear that this would be pointless -my now ex boss has drunk so much koolaid she's turned rainbow coloured and has blocked all of my attempts to discuss safe guarding worries. We were still friends up until Friday night. Guess what we fell out over?!

RJnomore1 · 30/09/2018 19:52

I am just leaving working for a council service which holds the charter mark. My dds secondary holds it.

I actually helped achieve it for us and I think they do amazing work for LGB young people. Their suppprt groups are sometimes the only place young people have even today.

The T is more troubling. I've also been to the Scottish transgender alliance training about 2 or less years ago and James and the cotrainer wee clearly saying the majority of children and young people who think they are trans do not go onto transition but revert to using their original gender over time.

The whole thing is very much linked to mental health and I heartily applaud that they are supporting our children to feel listened to but encouraging children to keep secrets concerns me as a youth worker.

bluetitsaretits · 30/09/2018 20:08

Agree RJ - they do some brilliant and much needed work, LGBT young people really need support and they do provide a valuable service.

The trans agenda is so worrying though -the keeping secrets is a red flag to me.

breastfeedingclownfish · 30/09/2018 21:35

Promoting keeping secrets from parents and including crossdressers in the definition of transgender. Good youth work that. No risks there, nooooo.

And the youth helpline. Who monitors the helpline and monitors what young people are being advised by the group that supports the above?

It's like they don't understand safeguarding is a thing. Truly terrifying.

Jodie777 · 01/10/2018 08:08

They seem to have plenty time and money to travel here there and everywhere telling people to respect LGBT people.

Jodie777 · 01/10/2018 08:14

I agree with respecting LGBT people but I do not agree with telling kids to keep secrets, nor with male bodied persons using womens toilets, changing rooms, womens shelters etc.

Bridgebuilder76 · 01/10/2018 08:26

Pretty disgusted that you're going after someone who provides domestic violence support to people. You lot are truly off the rails.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 01/10/2018 09:25

We say 'domestic abuse' in Scotland.
Apart from members of sisters uncut for some reason.

Glad to know my job puts me above reproach

Jodie777 · 01/10/2018 09:25

How is posting information on a company and someone who works for them 'going after' them, exactly? What I'm pointing out is they have plenty time and money for pointless little trips, money which would be better spent another way. I have no problem with domestic support workers whatsoever.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 01/10/2018 09:27

Jeez

Where to start with project fearless...

Sacro is an interesting group

Bridgebuilder76 · 01/10/2018 10:10

You amateur detective work is sterling, Jodie. The Miss Marple of Mumsnet!

breastfeedingclownfish · 01/10/2018 10:16

I think this thread has touched a nerve of an 'influencer'
