A sex workers cooperative actually have a stand at a university freshers fair. I am really scared by how quickly this is being normalised.

IAmLurkacus · 25/09/2018 23:13

Fuck me! This is worse than the Sussex uni/brushbox/dig in fiasco Shock

AssassinatedBeauty · 25/09/2018 23:13

Wtf? "sex workers" meaning selling sex/prostitution? What?

Blackberrypiesforbreakfast · 25/09/2018 23:16

Give it time, soon the job centre will be advertising sex work as a valid job and women who refuse to apply will be sanctioned.

IAmLurkacus · 25/09/2018 23:43

Glad I told DD not to go there, which I wouldn’t have done if it wasn’t for this board, so thanks.

So much progressive. So sex positive. Much empowerment.

Mind you, the number of “I’ve got a sugar daddy who pays for university” type articles it hardly surprises me. Students terrified of debt will hardly notice they’ve sold their peace of mind until it’s too fucking late.

Rebecca36 · 25/09/2018 23:48

Students have worked at escorts at times since I don't know when. Hardly surprising when you consider how poor so many are. However they didn't want people to know! It was very private.

Having a stand advertising yourself and others seems weird to me. I mean, their parents could find out for a start and people who find out will forever talk about them as a sex worker, years after when they are in a decent job and it's all behind them.

People are so strange.

I will be writing to this university and student union over this. Please do the same. Sad

You think it was ever common? I disagree.

ToeToToe · 26/09/2018 00:07

It's not sodding common to work as a prostitute when at university. This is just a well off man's wet dream. It's laughable - they can think they're "helping a young woman get her degree" - rather than the probable reality, which is that they're part of the mass-rape of trafficked women & girls.

noeffingidea · 26/09/2018 00:08

It wasn't common when I was at uni. My son's at uni right now, he manages quite well on his student loans and holiday jobs, why would it be different for the girls?

It isn't.

How the hell was this stand allowed at an event aimed primarily at teenagers?Angry

Turph · 26/09/2018 00:21

It's a punter's wet dream. Punters like to imagine their use of prostituted women is normal and commonplace. They like to think women do it for fun and even because they enjoy the sex. Hence why I asked what the poster's username was...

JillyArmeeen · 26/09/2018 00:49

Your point about the job centre is quite scary and I've heard it being made before.
Who is pushing this? We know some of the names of the people who are all for porn and prostitution. The intersection with trans rights activists is interesting to say the least.
If legalisation of prostitution happens like it has in Germany, those jobs will be posted in job centres, and it will be women like me, single mothers or unskilled workers that will be forced to take them, or be sanctioned.
Its an mra and incels wet dream.

"This is just a well off man's wet dream."

Yes, and it makes me sick. Women are under attack.

It wasn't common when I was (never came across it) My son's at uni and is managing.

Alas, it is years since we were at university.

It may be that, these days, women's rights seem to be going backwards, in comparison.

For example, the current scandal about GirlGuiding opening up a girls' network to dubiousness regarding boys and menl. And the fact that boys and men are not really wanted in a female-only situation.

Rebecca36 · 26/09/2018 01:43

The reason people haven't come across it is because anyone who did it kept it a strict secret. When I said it was common I didn't mean, like,50% of students, only that some do and that has always been the case. No-one knew.

The Freshers Fair stand is scary but I wonder if it is some sort of joke (albeit in bad taste), ie not really sex workers advertising their wares because it just doesn't make sense that they would do that.

No I don't think that sort of work will be found at the jobcentre, ever. People who do that wouldn't be going there to find jobs and a client would have to be in content with the jobcentre which means giving contact details. No way!

Terph I didn't open the 'adult' link, scared of what I might see :-). Reading a bit about it in the media and seeing the odd thing on TV is about my limit. (Oh I am Rebecca btw, not been anything else and only joined here a short while ago.)
