Has anyone just seen the trailer? Hmm
Mermaids heavily featured with the line ‘I’d rather have a live Daughter than a dead son’ .

For fucking fucks sake .

Also, the picture she used is odd. People can take whatever pictures they like, wearing whatever they like but ffs, during a supposedly serious talk she breaks out that picture (which is fine) and then says her daughter likes it because she looks hot... why are you keeping these stereotypes going fs.

FekkoTheLawyer · 08/10/2018 19:44

Maybe they will do a show where a male kid is bullied into believing that they need surgery and drugs - then later realises that all along they just wanted to have a pink bike and liked Barbie. And is actually a gay man.

And sues the arse of his parents, doctor, school, social workers, surgeon...

ScipioAfricanus · 08/10/2018 19:53

An ad for this came on the radio on my way home on the school run . I took the opportunity to ask DS (aged 8) some basic questions (‘can boys like unicorns? Can two women fall in love?’ can people like and be whatever they like as long as they obey the law and don’t hurt anyone?’ etc). I was pleased to find he still understands the difference between biological sex and regressive gender stereotypes. A year or so ago he started saying some very peer-led nonsense about mermaids being for girls and I have subjected him to more regular feminist conversation since then. So thanks ITV for the prod today!

QuackPorridgeBacon · 08/10/2018 19:55

DayMay The surgeon seems ok in that video. I feel so much for jazz though, because she has been fucked about with and everything made public. It’s awful exploitation. I do like that the surgeon said that the operations for genuine dysphoria are just to make the person feel better looking at themselves basically, not a direct quote. I like that she agrees therapy is so important.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 08/10/2018 19:56

FekkoTheLawyer I’d watch that.

Zeugma · 08/10/2018 20:02

They reviewed this on 'Front Row' on Radio 4 tonight. Guess who the 'critic' was....Juno Dawson. Who thought it was marvellous that when they went to do book readings on schools, there are now always some trans kids. Oh, and they got a mention of Mermaids in, along with a disingenuous 'I think it's based on a real case....'

FekkoTheLawyer · 08/10/2018 20:21

Quack - I'll sharpen my pencil... I shall call it - 'I'm not a fish, you clown!'

QuackPorridgeBacon · 08/10/2018 20:50

Zeugma Because transing kids in high numbers is great, meaning mental illness and awful mutiliation is also great? When should we get excited about the numbers of girls at school with FGM? Worlds gone fucking crazy. I think if a child can change their sex why shouldn’t they be able to have sex, maybe having relationships with teachers is also ok now because if you can choose to fuck up your body and do something you can’t (change sex) then why not choose all these others things we try to protect kids from. It’s a fucking joke.

FekkoTheLawyer I like it but if it has relevance I’ve no idea what it is lol. I want to find ways of saying it though as it rolls off the tongue so well. I remember calling someone a fish at school used to be an insult 😂

Zeugma · 08/10/2018 21:20

Quack, yeah, that was the general gist. Trans kids in schools = good and should be celebrated Sad

FekkoTheLawyer · 08/10/2018 21:32

Clownfish - they never tire of citing as 'evidence' - can change sex. Probably not gender - fish don't have that.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 09/10/2018 02:55

Anyone read the comments under that Daily Mail article?

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-6249577/Real-life-true-story-family-inspired-ITVs-transgender-drama-Butterfly.html#comments

Loads of people saying they won't be watching it and are sick of this propaganda. Critical comments upvoted and much agreement that children should be left alone to mature naturally and not be started on hormones and surgery until they are adults. Someone even mentions that totally reversible puberty blockers permanently lower a child's intelligence by an average of 10 points. Even if your child is very smart, would you really want that for them?

"Facilitating gender realignment before puberty is not a good thing to do. Many young people are confused about their sexuality but it works out in later teenage. When I was around 10 years of age I like girly things, played with the girls more than the boys, pushed dolls around in prams, played house with tea parties and liked cooking, so what happened. After the age of 16 I matured, went on to join the military, had a 30 year career in the fire service and now work in law enforcement. I am the father to 4 children, grandfather to 2, and husband to my wife. I still don't like male pursuits like sport or drinking with "The lads" but boy, cut me in half and you will fine the word MAN written al, the way through. All I'm saying is wait a while before you start encouraging a youngster to change." Upvoted 843 times.

"This woman is a monster, took her child to the USA so she could stuff him full on puberty blockers when he was twelve, then for his 16th birthday had him ^^. Calls herself a mother, I think not she was either desperate to have a daughter of else could not accept that her son was gay." upvoted 343 times, with the response "spot on" being upvoted 12 times and the response "She's a wonderful mother who put her child'a needs before her own!" being downvoted 19 times. No doubt the clarion call will go out over twatter and the TRAs will pile on to change the votes, but it does look as if the Mail readers have seen through Mermaids and their advice to schools.

I wonder if they know how much money Mermaids gets from Children in Need and the government to fund their attack on gender non conforming children?

pachyderm · 09/10/2018 07:30

I met a relative at a recent family gathering, a beautiful flamboyant young gay man of 18. I was marvelling at how at ease he and his friends are, and how different it was when I was his age in our town. The gay people I knew then had to leave for bigger cities, and/or pretend they were straight for a while.

I was also thinking that had he been born ten years later he would've been in danger from this mad cult. He was like Susie Green's son growing up- played with dolls, hung out with girls, had zero interest in football, wore dresses sometimes. And his family loved and accepted him and he's just himself, and happy. He's so lucky.

FekkoTheLawyer · 09/10/2018 07:43

Has anyone on the Mail corrected the USA surgery idea? I guess elsewhere where it is now banned is a little less 'wholesome mama tiger defending get cub' huh?

FekkoTheLawyer · 09/10/2018 07:51

Just heard the very end of R4 thought for the day. Errr - was that what I thought it was?

catkind · 09/10/2018 08:08

Just a guess - he/she is not going to turn out to be one of the 80% or whatever it is of kids who desist. They are not going to go along the Tavistock recommended course of watchful waiting. She going to stay a cute androgynous preteen not a spotty stubbly broad-shouldered deep-voiced teenager. She is not going to be pictured dominating girls' sports. Transphobia pictured will be of the "yuck tranny" variety or worse not the more common "you're cool I just don't think you're a girl" type that is apparently so literally violent.

AbsintheFriends · 09/10/2018 08:09

I'm actually beginning to be cautiously hopeful that this might be another pivotal moment that makes people out in the real world who aren't on twitter and don't know much about all this go 'WTF?'

I don't think it's going to be very good TV, for a start. It hasn't exactly got the edge of the seat quality of The Bodyguard. And people know when they're being preached at. It'll win a few people over, who will like that they feel educated about the correct way to think, but I reckon an awful lot of people will roll their eyes, decide it's a lot of worthy, predictable garbage and switch channels. It's bloody obvious what the ending is going to be, so no need to watch all the way through.

OrchidInTheSun · 09/10/2018 08:12

Yes it was Fekko. It was 'GRA reforms are just making life better for my beautiful non-binary child, nothing to see here, move along, anyone who says different is committing literal violence Hmm

FekkoTheLawyer · 09/10/2018 08:12

Is it a series? I hope they show the medical reality and mental issues - child and mother. Not the fluffy fairytale promoted by the show's advisers.

FekkoTheLawyer · 09/10/2018 08:14

Orchid - maybe tomorrow a victim of child mutilation or a woman who had been raped by a 'woman', or the mother of the five year old who was sexually assaulted in the girls loos in a US school by a 'girl' - then hounded for raising it.

Bonkerz · 09/10/2018 08:22

This whole thing terrifies me. I have a 12 year old nephew who is now taking pills to stop puberty as his mum says he wants to be a girl. He actually tells my dd (same age) that he's just a boy who likes girls things! His mum says he has body dysmorphia, he says he likes having long hair! Nothing adds up!
He refuses to play netball in favour of rugby and football and he tells dd he's not happy even living as a girl.
I do feel the world has gone mad. Just let kids be themselves. Why are we pigeon holing and making their lives harder?

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 09/10/2018 08:22

Useful Twitter thread here which has gone through Ofcom's rules and highlighted the ones that look problematic in relation to this programme. twitter.com/BlazingCyanogen/status/1048157653082497026

QuackPorridgeBacon · 09/10/2018 08:29

Zeugma It’s just so backwards. I see it as the same as anorexia, a mental health problem. Not something to be paraded about. How can anyone be happy that more children are asking to be mutilated. Horrible scary stuff. But also extremely sad. These poor children are being led to believe it’s ok. And if it turns out it’s not, they can’t even say so otherwise their support disappears as they don’t fit the Israel. Even the boxes have boxes now fs.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 09/10/2018 08:30

FekkoTheLawyer Ahh I see. They are such idiots. They are even using doctor who in their arguments. A fictional fucking alien Hmm

QuackPorridgeBacon · 09/10/2018 09:06

Bonkerz I think you should flag that up with someone. He is being forced to take pills he doesn’t want, his mother needs arrested now and the boy needs to be somewhere safe. What a selfish cunt his mother is.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 09/10/2018 09:11

'And people know when they're being preached at'

That is what is putting people's backs up in the Daily Mail comments.
The tone of them has moved on from the 'I disagree with this' that we have been seeing for years to a sense that people are more personally irritated by it.
