Is the OED now hate speech?

Interesting to note some of the sources of the complaints: twitter.com/Direct_PS/status/1044263398333132800

Yes, much as I like Waitrose (Ocado is their online branch), Sainsbury's is pretty much the same in terms of quality and much much cheaper.

And John Lewis/Waitrose just announced fairly dire financial performance, so they're not really in a good place to start alienating their customer base here. Because let's face it, MN has a higher percentage of their customer base on here than following the young activist on that twitter account.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 25/09/2018 16:13

That'd a shame isn't it? Another one to add to The List.

Tanith · 25/09/2018 16:15

Ocado is no longer the online branch for Waitrose; they are now standalone, although they still stock a lot of Waitrose products.

BiologyIsReal · 25/09/2018 16:21

Hope Andrew Gilligan is watching this. I imagine Times readers (never mind MN) are quite likely to be Ocado customers.

AbsintheFriends · 25/09/2018 16:21

Exactly. What are those stats again? 14 million unique visitors to MN per month? 128 million page views? I'd want to check the facts more carefully before pissing off that many potential customers.

Anlaf · 25/09/2018 16:26

Yy ocado just distribute waitrose products, ocado are totally separate company with CEO who dumped his wife and kids for a 20 year younger lingerie model

Waitrose are blameless in this (thus far)

thainparnell · 25/09/2018 16:39

Haha, yes, always. Women = adult non-human female in their sicko minds, hence why in their heart they probably do find those posters offensive. They have never seen actual women as human.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 25/09/2018 16:43

Just closed my account and asked to have my details removed from their database a la GDPR regulations. Have screenshotted my communications so God help them if they mailshot me.

RiverTam · 25/09/2018 16:43

Has the Primesight tweet been deleted?!

RiverTam · 25/09/2018 16:59

I have been on the phone with Ocado for 25 mins and they are running scared, they have steadily upped the fobbing off - first don’t know what the tweet is, then they don’t have any coment but I can speak to the press dept, then when I ask for a name and number I’m told there’s no-one available. All the massive long times on hold while they run around like headless chickens.

seafret · 25/09/2018 16:59

bastard barstards argh.

Can anyone please tell me the latest is with Ocado? I need to know whether to cancel my order.

arranfan · 25/09/2018 17:04

Can anyone please tell me the latest is with Ocado?

Speaking for my family, my siblings, and extended nieces and nephews and their families - they have a lot of hacked-off people on call waiting who want to know just what Ocado is thinking and to clarify this if they want our business. (I'm only just beginning to estimate what we must collectively spend with Ocado in a month and I reckon we could sustain our own small branch.)

RiverTam · 25/09/2018 17:05

Me too arran!

AbsintheFriends · 25/09/2018 17:06

I've just registered with Sainsburys.

SleepFreeZone · 25/09/2018 17:08

Bloody hell people have been busy on here lol. Never used Ocado in my life so at least I don’t have to boycott them.

dolorsit · 25/09/2018 17:09

Oh dear, oh dear.

I can see a niche training course on how to remain woke without alienating your customer base.

What this should do is stop companies from automatically assuming that because someone says something is transphobic it actually is.

It's the same thing with the get the l out protest. A lot of reporting that is transphobic very little about the actual content.

seafret · 25/09/2018 17:10

Thank you arranfan and RiverTam and others

I have 22 minutes to keep or cancel - looks like I will be cancelling.

They will be getting an email either way. I spend a lot of money with Sainsburys too and in many ways much prefer them. What a way to drive me permanently to the competition.

birdbandit · 25/09/2018 17:11

Wow this is growing into a huge campaign to silence (natal) women, isn't it?

There is a lot of grim online, all we got to do is shine light on that.

Can't get a billboard? Well we can screen shot and print out the stuff folk might not be aware of, the sex side of this. We can leave them in the newspapers in cafes. We can tape them to lamp posts, back of loo doors, mail them, etc.

Yes it would be awful if kids were to see it, but kids are being sterilised because people don't know.

birdbandit · 25/09/2018 17:14

There are so, so many more of us that there are of the MRA types.

Look at the anger caused by stickerwoman, we can show people what's going on.

We wouldn't even need words, I've seen pictures which say it all.

birdbandit · 25/09/2018 17:17

A wee leaflet, with lots of pictures, about Jess Bradley's activities. Send that to 20 head teachers.

Another about Aimee, another about Karen White.

Send these to your local Scouts club, the manager of the swimming baths, the building manager of your nearest John Lewis etc, etc.

birdbandit · 25/09/2018 17:18

Twitter is huge, but real life is bigger.

And there are loads of us.

SleepFreeZone · 25/09/2018 17:20

I have talked to countless of my friends and none of them have a clue what I am talking about. They don’t know what’s going on and probably won’t know until it directly affects them. I shall keep spreading the word though.

Tanith · 25/09/2018 17:22

I’m giving Ocado chance to reply to this.

It seems to me they checked with their advertising company and accepted their assurances.

I’d like to give them a chance to investigate for themselves and release a statement before I cancel.

Tanith · 25/09/2018 17:23

Already been talking to parents of girl guides: they meet at our church hall.

They are really shocked.

arranfan · 25/09/2018 17:25

I’m giving Ocado chance to reply to this.

Yes - however, I want to know why they decided to have such a knee-jerk response to a random enquiry and accepted what they were told in good faith. How on earth can it be so easy to mischaracterise Standing for Women and similar organisations?

I'll say again that the Twitter Bomb Hoax trial and the sceptics attracted legal support - I genuinely don't understand why there are no chambers or firms offering pro bono services to any of the women's organisations under fire like this. Or not afaik - and it may be hidden.
