Lib Dems choose trans rights over Fair Play for Women

  • Young Liberals tweet a photo of a Fair Play for Women leaflet being put in the bin, commenting "Putting transphobia in the bin where it belongs @fairplaywomen . Spreading this vile discrimination at Lib Dem conference, a place where we 100% fully support trans rights, is a disgrace."
  • Lib Dems LGBT+ account tweets that 'female' is a misogynist term and shouldn't be used.
  • Sarah Brown tweets "I have never felt so accepted and supported as a trans person, and as a woman, than at this Lib Dem conference. Feels like lots of people have realised how bad the abuse is and have really come out for us, for all of us."

For those who don't know Sarah, she's the TRA who told a woman to suck on her pickled formaldehyde balls.

Also at conference, it is announced that Sarah has been nominated for the Women Lib Dems Patsy Calton award. The award is given to a "woman in the party who has been nominated by her peers for the outstanding contribution they have made. The award is meant to showcase the obstacles that women have overcome, and their journey to get them to where they are now."

So that's the Greens, the Lib Dems and Labour all fully on board the trans train. Who am I supposed to vote for?

One thing that alarms me even more about all this is that all the major parties are simply laying open the way for an extreme right party to gain a lot of ground on the back of this nonsense.

BesmirchingMotherhood · 19/09/2018 21:50

Yes dommina that’s kind of what I was thinking. That account has posted much worse, IMO.

Totally. The options here are one of the main parties can get to grips with this issue or watch the rise of the far right. There MUST be at least some MPs that realise this?

Thethiniceofanewday · 19/09/2018 21:59

Maybe I am over-thinking it but I was conscious of the poster that was to be put up in Liverpool defining 'woman' as 'adult human female' and thinking that if TRAs start to claim 'females' is unacceptable as a term we have lost yet another means of defining ourselves.

Are they MAD?????

There are some choice responses to a Lib Dem man who stepped into the fray (unwisely, as it turned out). He said:

There was a small band of fruit loopers outside conference on Saturday, determined to go fake news on Lib Dem policy. It was just one of a million little signs that certain political groups feel their self appointed status as guardians of humanity is under threat. Good.

It's not certain whether he was referring to the campaign against the law consultation on gender (Fairplay for Women) or those campaigning against the LibDems creepy policies on prostituted women (NotBuyingIt, ObjectUk etc). Whoever the "fruitloopers" were, he got called out........

They’ve already claimed it for the most part. Look at the #adulthanfemale hashtag on Twitter. ‘I’m a #adulthumanfemale who just happens to be trans’ etc.

MrsMcGarry · 19/09/2018 22:15

Sarah didn't get the award. A fantastic young woman who worked on the upskirting bill did.

But she also didn't tell a woman to suck on her formaldehyde pickled balls - she said that to a man who constantly attacks both cis and trans women who dare to question or disagree with him on anything.

Dommina · 19/09/2018 22:17

Thanks for the clarification MrsMcGarry. I might look in to that a bit further.

JellySlice · 19/09/2018 22:18

WrongOnTInternet · 19/09/2018 22:27

Women by contrast just have to accept that we're not fully "accepted and supported" by British society.

Nothing new there.

The question is what do we do about it.

Thethiniceofanewday · 19/09/2018 22:28

thanks for the correction.

BAN ALL THE WORDS Grin

Just for the record, it looks as if Sarah Brown and Zoe O'Connell were nominated for the Patsy Calton award by the LGBT+ LDs. A lot of women were nominated. Sarah and Zoe definitely didn't win the prize, and weren't mentioned when it was handed out. IIRC it went to a young woman who is an aide of Wera Hobhouse, for doing amazing work on the Upskirting Bill.

There were other things going on at the conference in relation to women which were not trans-oriented: a debate calling for abortion equality for women in NI was one, and a good talk (and book) by Jo Swinson on actual women's actual issues. She really seems to understand what (both of) those consist of, and I'm trying to nerve myself to ask her to disagree with the notion that a Parliament with 50% transwomen would be any kind of triumph for women's rights.

I was very happy to see a brave woman from Fair Play for Women handing out Hands Off My Rights leaflets outside the conference. Most of those giving her hostile responses were very young women who have drink the Kool-Aid. The really successful TRA campaign to ban all dissent, and to scare people off even looking into the issues by labelling any doubts as bigotry and hatred, means that most of the young (and indeed most not-particularly-engaged older people) probably have no idea why GC women are concerned. To the young, the trans issue has become the equivalent of earlier generations' fight for race equality and then gay rights - self-evidently right, so that only bigots can be opposed. They don't see how much they have been manipulated. I don't see any excuse for Sal Brinton though.

ShotsFired · 19/09/2018 22:45

I understand there are moves afoot to launch a splinter LD party. It was described as momentum-like hive-off in terms of linkage to the existing party (but not in relation to policies).

If true, I wonder what direction they will take?

MrsMcGarry · 19/09/2018 23:02

You understand wrong shotsfired.

Ereshkigal · 19/09/2018 23:08

Perhaps they just didn't tell you?

WomaninBoots · 19/09/2018 23:43

I think I'm just going to write "Women don't have penises" and draw a dick on my ballot paper next time around to be honest.

Ereshkigal · 19/09/2018 23:46

I think "women don't have penises" is a nice catchy look-up friendly slogan to write on a ballot paper.

ShotsFired · 20/09/2018 02:01

Oh, really? Sad
That's disappointing. Do you know any more about that MrsMcGarry?

Charliethefeminist · 20/09/2018 07:52

Not having this. They take away women, we resort to female, they object to female, we are forced to say chromosomes, they say chromosomes are reductive, we end up with penis and vagina people, they say stop reducing people to genitals. It's all their fault in the first place. Fine, we will have 'woman' back.

TerfsUp · 20/09/2018 07:59

The Lib Dems can fuck off.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 20/09/2018 08:00

What have I misinterpreted?

Isn’t the tweet objecting to “female” as noun not an adjective? “Female” as a noun always sounds pretty bad to me (see Friday Night Dinner for a serious academic reference Grin)

Ereshkigal · 20/09/2018 08:06

Don't ever concede the word woman. As you can see, nothing is ever enough.

BesmirchingMotherhood · 20/09/2018 08:40

Thanks to this radicalisation portal I’ve stopped qualifying ‘woman’ in any way. No more ‘actual woman’ or ‘old fashioned cunty woman’, just woman.
