Karen White case - how MN can help build political pressure for change

PotsofJam · 08/09/2018 14:58

Jess Phillips MP has commented on the Karen White case, saying anyone convicted of VAWG should be excluded from the women’s prison estate.

See her tweet here:
twitter.com/jessphillips/status/1038350610163265537?s=21
This could be the start of a media-political process. Jess has raised a question here. Do other MPs agree with her? Does the Government agree?
Thanks to the wonder of Twitter, email and the rest, you can help make them answer that question.
So if you’re on Twitter and have some time to spare this weekend, why not send Jess’s tweet to some MPs and ask:

Do you agree with the chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Domestic Violence that prison service rules should be changed to exclude all VAWG offenders from the women’s estate, no matter what gender they identify as?

How many transwomen would there be if women didn't have the vote, couldn't get degrees and most of us didn't work, or did factory jobs with significantly less pay (still pay gap)didn't have female only spaces, rape crisis, female sports, hostels etc, etc

But, they would be showing us how to woman correctly and demonstrating that it is our innate inferiority that is keeping us there (look at the senior posts in nursing, education etc.). There would, of course, be Brave and Stunning exceptions that would allow some people to vote, work in high-paying industries etc.

Datun · 09/09/2018 11:34

I'm still worried that this outrageous case is shifting the Overton window.

I have no doubt it will be addressed, and rules put in place.

Then - stop bellyaching about men in your changing room, at least there's not a rapist in your prison.

Polynerd · 09/09/2018 11:35

Do MPs have any responsibility for inmates at prisons in their constituencies? Because the MP for New Hall is, I believe, Mary Creagh. Would it be helpful to contact her?

Ereshkigal · 09/09/2018 11:38

YY Datun.

RedToothBrush · 09/09/2018 11:44

Jess is currently terrified of being deselected by Momentum types. She is already had her cards marked as a 'blairite' and has supported Jewish MPs.

Any sign of further 'disloyalty to the leader' (one of the reasons given this week in a vote of no confidence in a Jewish MP) and she will go higher on the hit list.

GColdtimer · 09/09/2018 11:51

Datun that is my concern too. Layla Moran has told me she agrees there needs to be consideration about prisons. It's a get out of jail free card for them. However if they agree there is s problem with male bodied people in prisons, why should we be happy with them in other safe places. If they admit there is a problem.....

On a slight aside I have repeatedly asked her if the LD stance is TWAW how do they define trans? And a number of other questions related to safeguarding NSPCC/GG. I have also asked if she or someone from her party will follow Caroline Lucas lead and meet with women's groups (and pointed out that I can see why she wouldn't, given the hate CL is experiencing)

Sorry, slightly off at s tangent there. I'm so riled this morning.

Questions are being asked about trans-rights lobbying charities, organisations eg:

James Kirkup:
Mermaids lobbying & conflict with NHS services:
blogs.spectator.co.uk/2018/05/why-are-some-mps-trying-to-shut-down-the-transgender-debate/

James Kirkup
Gendered Intelligence etc:
"Prison policy says prisoners should generally be housed in the estate that matches their expressed gender, subject to a review by a Transgender Case Board following rules drawn up after a review partly run by an organisation called Gendered Intelligence, one of a handful of small trans rights groups that enjoy an interesting level of access and influence in Whitehall."
blogs.spectator.co.uk/2018/09/why-was-a-transgender-rapist-put-in-a-womens-prison/

Jonny Best on Stonewall:
"But Stonewall has lost its way. Ruth Hunt, the CEO since 2014, has invited into the organisation the most extreme trans ideologues and activists and she has swallowed their arguments whole. Hunt is stubbornly ignoring the danger self-ID poses to women and girls — and that is a scandal and a tragedy.

If you care about the safety of women and girls it’s time not just to ignore Stonewall, but to actively oppose it.

Speaking up for women and girls is not transphobia."

You're not on this earth very long. For godsake woman, at least use some of the time to look yourself in the eye.

This.

It doesn't matter to me how unpopular my stance is. I'm not going to sacrifice my integrity on the shrine of popular opinion.

I judge most harshly the people who have the nous to understand that there is a huge and damaging lie being practiced on an enormous scale, yet still cannot find the courage and integrity to speak up and be unpopular.

arranfan · 09/09/2018 11:58

The bros have no loyalty, no matter how much she flirts with them to prove she's not like all those unwoke 2nd Wave feminists, she will be de-selected for a young, woke icon. Look what happened to Morgan (different group, same techniques). Look what happened to Kober.

longwayoff · 09/09/2018 11:58

Agree other pamayres.

C0untDucku1a · 09/09/2018 12:05

Ive emailed my mp. Again.

OldCrone · 09/09/2018 12:23

I have also asked if she or someone from her party will follow Caroline Lucas lead and meet with women's groups (and pointed out that I can see why she wouldn't, given the hate CL is experiencing)

I disagree that we should be letting MPs off the hook with 'I can see why she wouldn't'. We should not be ruled by cowards who are too scared to stand up for what they believe in. Ordinary women have put their heads above the parapet. MPs should be standing with them and leading them, not cowering down because they're too scared of a bit of hate on twitter.

IAmLurkacus · 09/09/2018 12:24

My MP’s going to be emailed again next week (they already got yet another one last week) and I hope all the lurkers will to. This is an absolute bloody disgrace and needs to stop. The whole country should be hanging their heads in shame.

arranfan · 09/09/2018 12:27

So, this is truly the OP's only post on MN - and what a user name. No engagement - just a dump and run.

As PP said, definitely a way to get women on Jess P's side and do positive things for her profile.

Unless this is a cunning Russian ploy :)

Ereshkigal · 09/09/2018 12:29

I agree. She's an elected politician.

IAmLurkacus · 09/09/2018 12:30

The OP could also be taken as wanting to exclude actual women (you know the cunty type) from the women’s estate. And put them where? In with the men? I don’t care how violent they’ve been, I want other women protected from them, but I don’t want them raped!

RedToothBrush · 09/09/2018 12:32

she will be de-selected for a young, woke icon.

The sooner Labour MPs realise this...

arranfan · 09/09/2018 12:37

The Prison Service needs a complete rethink and overhaul - but that has been true for decades. Politically, it's a hard sell to finance prison reform no matter how logical the argument nor how rationally the cost-savings can be shown to stack up over time.

Bowlofbabelfish · 09/09/2018 12:42

doesn't matter to me how unpopular my stance is. I'm not going to sacrifice my integrity on the shrine of popular opinion.

Hear hear.

GColdtimer · 09/09/2018 12:45

Oldcrone I agree. My email was longer than that, pointing out that anyone who disagrees with these people, even previous allies, are thrown to the dogs. LM view is they are all lovely, misunderstood people. I was pointing out they are not.

That probably didn't come across in my post.

FloralBunting · 09/09/2018 13:23

Karen White raped someone in a mixed sex psychiatric ward and was still put in this prison?

Sad

I'm sitting here in floods of angry tears. How much do women have to endure before we are properly protected? How many more of these evil creatures are going to be given free reign by the odious dudebros who look at women like me, who was raped on a mixed sex psychiatric ward, and don't even think we merit attention beyond calling us bigots.

God, I am so upset I can hardly see to type.

Bowlofbabelfish · 09/09/2018 13:29

floral Flowers

I am furious even thinking about it. I can’t even begin to imagine how this makes you feel.

R0wantrees · 09/09/2018 13:34

FloralBunting Flowers

It is beyond appalling.
Questions are being asked (far too late) but they can't be silenced now.

There should be an urgent question in the Commons.
There's a historic child abuse enquiry going on FFS.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 09/09/2018 13:42

Floral there are so many of us who are outraged by what has happened to women like you.

We can get change. We are legion

MsBeee · 09/09/2018 13:43

Danton

Overton window, yes I know what you mean.

He raped women in a psychiatric ward. We must keep stating facts. All the information supports ALL women, SEX based spaces.

Its not just about prison and the more I've had the courage to speak out about this, the more I find people agreeing. I've had some upsetting responses, but more really encouraging responses.

Keep going folks.

Facts, facts, facts are the winner in this one.

Denying difference between men and women is what is really discriminatory.
