Karen White case - how MN can help build political pressure for change

Jess Phillips MP has commented on the Karen White case, saying anyone convicted of VAWG should be excluded from the women’s prison estate.

See her tweet here:
twitter.com/jessphillips/status/1038350610163265537?s=21
This could be the start of a media-political process. Jess has raised a question here. Do other MPs agree with her? Does the Government agree?
Thanks to the wonder of Twitter, email and the rest, you can help make them answer that question.
So if you’re on Twitter and have some time to spare this weekend, why not send Jess’s tweet to some MPs and ask:

Do you agree with the chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Domestic Violence that prison service rules should be changed to exclude all VAWG offenders from the women’s estate, no matter what gender they identify as?

I don't think anyone with a conviction for a violent crime, or who is or has been on the sex offenders register, should be permitted to change their name or sex.
I hope that Jess can get a dialogue going because we haven't been able to.

theOtherPamAyres · 08/09/2018 15:12

For me, this doesn't go far enough.

I want to see the government withdraw and rethink a public policy - across every single department of education, home office etc - that allowed this to happen in the first place.

It has only come about because the government, and its Quango the so-called Equality and Human Rights commission, made it so. They embraced the transgender ideology and launched Stonewall, Gendered Intelligence and Mermaids in a stealthy project to bring in self i/d in advance of the GRA.

Jess Phillips does not come out of this smelling of roses. She has supported Stonewall and was on the Maria Miller Committee. She has been cowardly. Shame on her.

Agreed. If she's had a more fundamental/radical change of mind then she needs to state this unequivocally.

speakingwoman · 08/09/2018 15:16

YES

arranfan · 08/09/2018 15:18

If Phiilips were serious, she'd announce that she's asking for a suspension of the Miller report until such time as an independent panel reviews the independent evidence given to it by experts like Challenor and Bradley and whether the recommendations etc. need to be revised.

Again, she needs to reexamine her support for Stonewall while it's plainly unworkable advice and it could stand having an investigation the panels/committees that involve Challenor et al.

“Do you agree with the chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Domestic Violence that prison service rules should be changed to exclude all VAWG offenders from the women’s estate, no matter what gender they identify as?”

YES YES YES.

Ereshkigal · 08/09/2018 15:19

She's still playing handmaiden a bit too much for my liking. Look at this where she jumps in to make it clear that she doesn't support women to have women's spaces free of males but it must be on the "case by case basis" which effectively negates any protective effect in the EA:

twitter.com/jessphillips/status/1038382980073500672?s=20

Embarrassing. Shit or get off the pot Jess.

Bowlofbabelfish · 08/09/2018 15:19

It’s too fragmentary an approach. A blanket policy that all offenders reside in the estate of their actual biological sex is needed. NOT faffing around with ‘well maybe this person is OK.’

Ireland has a policy of prisoners being in the estate that matches their sex. It works.

NOTHING else will protect women. A male bodied prisoner convicted of say fraud should NOT be a women’s prison either.

Stop appeasing and start protecting these very vulnerable women, many of whom have already faced sexual violence. Women’s jails should only contain biologically female prisoners. It beggars belief that anyone is negotiating this.

thatsmycustard · 08/09/2018 15:20

Surely the problem with excluding anyone convicted of VAWG is that sometimes the offenders are natal women?
I’m not suggesting that women are as violent as men because statistics show that to be untrue; but sometimes offenders are women, causing physical harm to other females - where would they be imprisoned according to Phillips’ proposition?

Ereshkigal · 08/09/2018 15:22

I actually have lost all respect for Jess. That xxxx to that clueless woman-dismissing woke bro has made me really angry.

LangCleg · 08/09/2018 15:26

Yeah, no. Sorry. Jess is just busy triangulating, as per usual.

Not trusting her with any initiative to protect vulnerable women from gender identity ideology. She'll sell us out as soon as it suits her.

All mouth and no pocketless trousers.

Mrbatmun · 08/09/2018 15:30

This argument that 'well sometimes women assault other women in prison so let's just let in the blokes with penises who have already used that penis to rape a woman' is such bollocks.

Karen White is a man. Who should never have been allowed near a women's prison. We need to keep saying this.

thatsmycustard · 08/09/2018 15:31

If that’s aimed at me, Mrbatmun, then I suggest you read my post again.

IAmLurkacus · 08/09/2018 15:32

I was beginning to warm towards her, then she used the word ‘cis’. Fuck off Jess and take your misogynistic, racist shitshow of a party with you.

Mrbatmun · 08/09/2018 15:37

It's more aimed at what I read on the Twitter thread.

ShotsFired · 08/09/2018 15:40

Look at her responses on the rest of the thead.
She's a snake and I don't trust her one bit.

Ereshkigal · 08/09/2018 15:41

YY. That thread has opened my eyes.

Popchyk · 08/09/2018 15:45

Carrie Cooper (was Gary Cooper) was convicted yesterday in St. Albans of sexual offences against a young girl. This person is already serving 14 years for raping a 12 year old girl.

Metro link

If male transgender sex offenders are so rare, then how come we are seeing two guilty convictions for sexual offences against women and children on the same day?

yellowsnowissnowjoke · 08/09/2018 15:51

www.additudemag.com/adult-test-for-add-adhd/ just a thought...

yellowsnowissnowjoke · 08/09/2018 15:52

^^Oops, that was meant to be for a completely different thread, apologies!

pearlkent · 08/09/2018 15:55

Jess Phillips was my last hope for sense in the Labour party, but that hope has now gone. What is WRONG with these women/so-called feminists? They are all handmaidens. How can they seriously consider themselves feminists? They make me sick, especially Stella Creasy. I just can't bear to listen any of them anymore.
I wish we were back in the days of Clare Short and her ilk.

thatsmycustard · 08/09/2018 15:56

Yeah that twitter thread is pretty terrible.

I’m quite pissed off that the likes of Phillips (and Creasy with her policy against misogynistic crime that doesn’t define what a woman is) are intelligent women who have persevered and made their way in politics - and yet they are choosing to throw their lot in with people who have no interest in women’s rights being preserved. Disappointing.

ShotsFired · 08/09/2018 15:58

My 60-something, crusty, "cut him and he'll bleed blue", safest seat going Tory MP is more of a feminist than these women will ever be.

For shame.
