Thank you, James Kirkup and The Spectator

My DS (34) called in today and we ended up having a discussion about gender politics. We both have a subscription to The Spectator and he's clearly been reading James' columns and was a bit confused.

So (with thanks to the FWR posters too) I was able to explain the concerns and definitely peak transed him - a couple of minutes of the Alex 'Grrrl' Drummond video was the coup de grace

So thank you, James, for engaging those who most likely wouldn't normally give this sort of thing a second thought. The message is getting through

👏👏👏

TerfsUp · 01/09/2018 19:28

James Kirkup is a good 'un.

TimeLady · 01/09/2018 19:30

The good thing was he was the one who initiated the conversation. Made it much easier talking about 'lady dick' and 'male lesbians'. Grin

Not a conversation I thought we'd ever have

JK has helped my parents understand these issues too.

Beautifulday49 · 01/09/2018 19:32

I can't believe it's come to this where as a lifelong feminist & leftie I'm now thanking the goddess for journos like Kirkup & others in right wing publications! But the a-mazing women who have been speaking up about this from the get go have all my admiration & thanks. ❤

carceralfeminist · 01/09/2018 19:57

I am so happy for you, OP, your DS sounds like a smart one.
James is another Star
And kudos to the Spectator.

TheRoadtoTerfdom · 01/09/2018 20:58

This is just a guess, of course, but I think that James Kirkup would be very pleased to hear that. He’d probably also want to say how pleased he was to welcome all sorts of new friends— from here and elsewhere — to the broad church that is the Spectator. And to wish you a very nice evening.

But I’m just guessing, of course.

Luglio · 01/09/2018 21:04

Lol! Another new subscriber here. Keep it up JK. Flowers

Popchyk · 01/09/2018 21:05

Yay. James Kirkup.

Thank you James.

For standing up for women and girls when so few people have the courage.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 01/09/2018 21:06

Road, if, on a purely theoretically basis, one could pass on thanks, that would be lovely!

IAmLurkacus · 01/09/2018 21:18

I hope James knows how grateful we all are to him and the spectator Smile

boatyardblues · 01/09/2018 21:24

Janice, James & Andrew are the three musketeers. It would be lovely if MNers could throw them a party to show our appreciation for their solid work on this. Richard Littlejohn’s really careful piece earlier this week causes difficulty, though - to invite or not? Grin

Mamaryllis · 01/09/2018 21:31

Oh oh oh. Fantasy dinner party. James, Janice and Andrew, plus Sophie, Justine and Caroline. Let’s get this nonsense tidied up.
It would indeed be lovely if someone could pass on our thanks to James and the Spectator.

Luglio · 01/09/2018 21:33

Yep, Littlejohn can come. And Sarah Vine.

Cismyfatarse1 · 01/09/2018 21:37

If he happens to wander down to these here parts, then thanks. Huge thanks. Great journalism .

TimeLady · 01/09/2018 22:02

Don't forget Rod Liddle's invite too. I wonder how he'd get on if we put him next to Littlejohn?

(Hi to James)

Chapeau, James for your clear headed articles and persistence. Hope the messages get to him one way or another road!

Maybe add Hadley Freeman and Helen Lewis to the invite? I was thinking of people I started to follow prompted by mumsnet - @Giagia and Caroline criado-Perez used to be brilliant, very vocal. I know it must be exhausting to sustain but they seem quite quiet on gender issues now.

tiredandweary · 01/09/2018 22:16

James Kirkup should know that I now have an online Spectator subscription off the back of his articles. And although I stay clear of the below the line (and they reckon Mumsnet is transphobic!!) I enjoy the 'Evening Blend' and reading some insightful writing.
Hopefully he'll get the message by one means or another Flowers

TimeLady · 01/09/2018 22:18

Sorry, Owen, you're not invited.

TimeLady · 01/09/2018 22:20

The Spectator's below the line comments are generally appalling, aren't they? And that me speaking as a Tory.

MipMipMip · 01/09/2018 22:29

Should James happen to see this thread he would find that i, too, give my thanks. And that if in the future I ever have some money then I will be getting a subscription to the Spectator. As someone who has never subscribed to any paper this is a big step got me!

StormyDaniels · 01/09/2018 22:36

Me too tired (re the subscription).

And someone else on MN recommended the Spectator Coffee House podcast, with one highlight being Fraser Nelson's dulcet tones

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/09/2018 22:37

TheRoadtoTerfdom How lovely it would be if the lovely James were to be made aware of how much he is appreciated by the harpy feminazi terfy mumsnetters. We clasp him to our viperish bosoms.

I, for one, want to adopt him.

BraveAndStunning · 01/09/2018 22:38

Oh I forgot you beat me to that name, you fucker you

StormyDaniels · 01/09/2018 22:42

Oh and also I would wish James a pleasant break/holiday/staycation, wherever he is.
