I am known as Your Majesty at home but I don't think the tax office/dentist/pension fund people will respect it somehow.

What a load of shite.

Carrrotsandcauliflower · 26/08/2018 14:13

Unbelievable. This all just goes too far. The whole situation is going far beyond sense now.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 26/08/2018 14:22

The self indulgence of it all is just so bloody depressing.

It is. Your succinct post combined with your username yetalk has cheered me right up Grin

Magpiesarehuge · 26/08/2018 14:36

If i do get asked, I’m tempted to just say “be ba baloo ah”

ErrolTheDragon · 26/08/2018 14:40

I think the appropriate response should be something like, 'I don't care, I find the prioritisation of gender (which is the means of women's oppression) over sex (which is why women are still oppressed) to be driven by misogyny.'

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 26/08/2018 14:42

The guide advises that saying you “don’t care” which pronoun is used is offensive,

Well they can fuck right off with that

I dont care...ive been referred to as a man on the odd occasion and i didnt fucking care then either

MIdgebabe · 26/08/2018 14:47

Hubby says could he just be called human?

yetanotherusernameAgain · 26/08/2018 14:49

How about dropping he/she him/her and just using "it"? Much more efficient and environmentally friendly: no mental workload trying to remember a variety of pronouns, no risk of offending someone by mis-pronouning them, no need to waste resources making badges and producing guides, saving data storage by not including a line about pronouns in email signatures. Sorted!

And that sign on the toilet door in the photo is amusing me. The symbol on a white triangle for some reason reminded me of hazardous material signs. And then I remembered that in the UK the triangle is used for warnings in traffic and hazard signs, so subliminally we learn that a triangular sign warns of danger. So not a welcoming sign at all.

Ullupullu · 26/08/2018 14:52

This makes me so incredibly sad for the young women starting university and internalising unquestioningly that this is so Right On and the way things are now.

PurpleDaisies · 26/08/2018 14:55

From the article...

Students should bare in mind that gender is “fluid” so even if you have used a particular pronoun for someone in the past, this may not apply indefinitely.

Bare in mind? Not what I would have expected from the Telegraph.

I don’t understand what the problem is with letting people just tell you if they want to be referred to by a different pronoun. No need for badges and ice breakers etc.

champagnesupernouveaux · 26/08/2018 14:57

My workplace is "encouraging" us to use our pronouns in our email signatures. How long before it becomes compulsory?

We also have to wear name badges. How long before they want pronouns on those too?

arranfan · 26/08/2018 15:03

If this is the action of a handful of enthusiastic members of Edinburgh's Student Union/Association then kudos for their media savvy in bringing themselves to the attention of a major newspaper because they've managed to publicise their actions on a much larger scale than they could have anticipated (possibly).

Those of you in workplaces where it's encouraged to provide your pronouns - is it possible to give some indication of the sector in which you work? Social work? Education? Local Govt.? Financial Services?

TrumpsToddlerTantrums · 26/08/2018 15:08

"without having to single themselves out"????? Is that not the whole point?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/08/2018 15:11

I am he as you are he as you are me
And we are all together

Maybe I'll just write "Goo goo g'joob" next time I get asked!

yetanotherusernameAgain · 26/08/2018 15:11

I've only seen a pronoun line in an email signature once, and it was from someone in the student services department of a university. No other departments' staff were doing it, so it wasn't a university-wide initiative.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/08/2018 15:12

What does it look like, yetanother ? I can't imagine how you'd phrase it...

user1499173618 · 26/08/2018 15:12

The U.K. is in the grip of the most flabbergasting collective delusions.

Lacypants · 26/08/2018 15:25

If we all stopped using pronouns and exclusively used names or descriptors ie. That hat belongs to John.
Are you going to Susans party? Susan is really looking forward to seeing you!
Could you help the customer with the red coat please?

Certain sectors of the population WOULD STILL have the rage because they want to force people to lie

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/08/2018 15:30

Yes. It's like the wanting into women's spaces rather than using the same thing in a mixed sex space - it's all about validation.

arranfan · 26/08/2018 15:32

The U.K. is in the grip of the most flabbergasting collective delusions.

Alternatively...

The U.K. is in the grip of a social control field experiment on an unprecedented scale. The experimenters are heedless of the consequences for the public understanding of science and society, never mind our collective cohesion and mental health.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/08/2018 15:35

^These creatures you call mice, you see, they are not quite as they appear. They are merely the protrusion into our dimension of vast hyperintelligent pandimensional beings. The whole business with the cheese and the squeaking is just a front."
The old man paused, and with a sympathetic frown continued.
"They've been experimenting on you, I'm afraid.^

vesuvia · 26/08/2018 15:40

I think a badge that says e.g. "my pronoun is hir", is usually short for : "when (not if) you talk about me, me, me, me, me, me..., use the pronoun hir because I'm special".

BettyDuMonde · 26/08/2018 15:54

Not sure how it can be considered patronising to call girls, ‘girls’.

Actual grown-up women (adult human females) sure, unlikely to be appropriate, unless in a very informal setting.

But actual girls? As in, minor human females?

WTAF?

BettyDuMonde · 26/08/2018 15:55

My son is a fresher this year. He will tell anyone who asks that his pronouns are ‘fuck’ and ‘off’.

How long d’you reckon it’ll be before he gets expelled?

esk1mo · 26/08/2018 15:57

i live in Edinburgh and am frequently in/around Edinburgh uni/their students. i can confirm it will be a very, very small minority who involve themselves in this, thankfully.
