Have WEP ever condemned violence and threats against women?

I'm talking in relation to the threats and actual violence directed to gender critical women.

I am aware that they hold a different stance on this issue but it is still possible to condemn violence against women who hold a different view from your own - and the motivation for these threats and the violence is definitely misogynistic. Men who express similar views - and even men who are actually abusive towards and attack trans people - are not subject to the same abuse. The nature of the threats (e.g. explicit, detailed threats of sexual violence against female bodies) are misogynistic. And it is part of a pattern where women receive rape and death threats for attempting to take part in politicial life.

I know one branch of WEP has openly supported the perpetrator of the assault on Maria MacLachlan, which I find even more abhorrent than their TWAW line. Have WEP as an organisation condemned violence against women (including those whose views they disagree with)?

Not as far as I know.

As you say, they have shown solidarity with a transgender person accused (subsequently convicted) of punching a woman though.

The Lambeth branch liked a Tweet from transactivists saying that people should turn up to court to support Tara Wolf, a transgender person who punched Maria Maclachlan.

When asked about why they liked the Tweet, WEP Lambeth further stated:

"We liked a tweet from sisters uncut, about showing solidarity. We’ve had nothing to do with the case. We fully support trans women".

Do you have a link or screenshot of the WEP branch supporting Tara Wood?

drradfem · 16/08/2018 10:01

Cross post popchyck - thanks for the link!

Popchyk · 16/08/2018 10:04

The actual Tweet that the WEP branch liked is also on that link.

Scroll down. The Sisters Uncut one in black. Near the bottom of the screen.

I can't think of one single politician apart from David Davies MP and the Labour Cllr from Cambridge that condemmed the violence against women.

They must all think that the way TRA behave is OK! Bomb making equipment, thumping, career wrecking, sexual and death threats, no problem if it is against women by poor six foot three - male bodied transwomen!

Ereshkigal · 16/08/2018 10:26

I hope one day these cowards and instigators will be called to account for this.

Caroline Flint has. She voiced this concern about the abuse women have faced on this issue in the House of Commons. Angela Eagle tried to shout her down.

Ereshkigal · 16/08/2018 10:39

Yes, Caroline Flint too. Very brave of her. Thanks

Charliethefeminist · 16/08/2018 10:41

Angela Eagle huh.

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 16/08/2018 10:46

I knew it was a labour women mp that "heckled" Caroline Flint, but I didn't know it was Angela Eagle. Though I'm not surprised.

Charliethefeminist · 16/08/2018 10:48

Very self-righteous person.

scepticalwoman · 16/08/2018 10:50

So MPs like Angela Eagle are actually silencing complaints about violence against women? Nice.

IAmNotAntiWomen · 16/08/2018 10:50

I stand corrected, yes Caroline asked a question and Angela shouted over her.

Angela did not like threats against her by pro Corbyn people that put a brick in her window.

Angela will defend three six foot three male bodied people in their 20s who wants to punch a 60 yo women or their allies who threaten, then accumulate bomb making equipment, yes Angela goes on the attack to Caroline for condemming the behaviour. Hmm

Charliethefeminist · 16/08/2018 10:54

It's fawning over men, is all.

Ereshkigal · 16/08/2018 11:14

What did Angela say?

Charliethefeminist · 16/08/2018 11:19

I saw the clip and you couldn't see her, I heard indistinct shouting off mic. The clip is available somewhere.

Charliethefeminist · 16/08/2018 11:20

Does hansard record that kind of interjection

Ereshkigal · 16/08/2018 11:20

Thanks Charlie.

NameChangedAgain18 · 16/08/2018 11:39

This is the Hansard text, Eagle’s interjection is not recorded:

Ereshkigal · 16/08/2018 11:47

Thank you. Really good to watch her.

hackmum · 16/08/2018 12:02

There was this decent piece from Tom Harris in the Telegraph about All Women Shortlists, which mentioned some of the abuse women have been getting:

Sorry to bump this old thread up but I came across it when searching for threads on the WEP.

"I know one branch of WEP has openly supported the perpetrator of the assault on Maria MacLachlan"

What?? I was thinking of joining...I've suddenly changed my mind. Is this really true? Which branch and is there any online evidence, SanctimoniousMorph ?

bd67th · 15/09/2018 00:55

Angela did not like threats against her by pro Corbyn people that put a brick in her window.

It wasn't even her window, it was a window into a stairwell on the other side of the building, and there's no evidence it was Corbynites and not just drunks from the nearby pub.

Yes. It was Lambeth branch.

The WEP is such a waste of energy. It makes me quite cross every time I watch Bake Off.
