BBC reality check on trans prisoners

Let's play that great gameshow activity "what crucial piece of information is missing from this report?"

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42221629

Those numbers add up to more than 60 because some prisoners are serving time for more than one offence.

We don't know the gender of the victims or perpetrators in these cases.

Which is why, BBC, it is important to put in a breakdown of overall numbers of prisoners in the UK, numbers of sex offenders and number of violent offenders - BY SEX!

And, gosh, guess what, "Reality Check"? This information is but a quick google away, because the government actually put the figures online for us - they're not hidden away in a cellar with broken stairs in a locked filing cabinet with a sign saying "beware of the leopard."

From the report for 2017:
"In 1900 there were 152 male prisoners per 100,000 men in the population. This rate has increased to 348 per 100,000 in 2017. There were 27 female prisoners per 100,000 head of female population in 1900. In 2017 this rate had decreased to 16 per 100,000."

I believe the current figures are that 98% of the prisoners in the UK convicted of sexual offences are serving time in the male estate.

Sex offending (despite recent much publicised "women do it too" newspaper reports) is overwhelmingly committed by men.

They've provided a BBC branded article that will be waved around by TRAs whenever feminists raise concerns about transwomen sex offenders being let into women's prisons. (Since it'll be TLDR to most of the audience, its headline "nothing to see here" is far far more significant than its content.)

It is nothing more than a spoiler of the Fair Play for Women study. More than anything it looks like negative propaganda against a group providing facts and analysis. This is a real low.

This, and it really can't be overestimated. A lie is halfway round the world before the truth has got its boots on.

Agree. But I think it's telling that they're not actually promoting it to a wider audience.

nauticant · 16/08/2018 10:27

But they are. They're just using proxies to do that for them.

The reason it's not been tweeted is to deny the opportunity of immediate and coherent debunking. If that was tweeted, there would be 300 and more responses on why its wrong, many from well respected feminists and public figures. That's why its not tweeted. Not to hide it - to hide the response.

I had to repost because of apostrophes. I hate a missing apostrophe.

Yes you're right. It's calculated though. They're fully aware what the general public think, not just thick and woke.

In my work I've been involved in commissioning studies, for example by universities, to rubbish opponents' positions, say about market share. Obviously what you get (ie what you're paying for) is partisan and heavily spun. The Reality Check article reminded me of this kind of work.

I think the BBC is meddling in the politics of trans identity ideology. They have form for doing this in other areas.

They would be utterly stupid not to be aware of the damage this kind of behaviour is doing to their standing, and so I can only assume the people involved don't give a shit beyond feeling righteous and burnishing their own reputations.

AncientLights · 16/08/2018 11:11

The BBC does have a higher-than-usual number of trans employees, as their diversity guru highlighted recently. About 2% I think. So not surprised by this biased piece at all.

Apologies if this has already been posted:
