BBC Children In Need withdraws funding from Glasgow rape crisis centre for 'not doing enough for men and boys'

www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/16405729.glasgow-rape-crisis-has-been-forced-to-close-waiting-list-for-face-to-face-support/

This has happened to Abused Men in Scotland with funding from the Big Lottery Fund too apparently.

A worrying trend in funding being removed from single-sex services (and RCG isn't even single-sex, as they include transwomen, as they have to due to Scottish govt funding, but it's still not enough)

*There is a reminder at the bottom of the article that you can donate to your local rape centre, hopefully RCG gets a bunch of donations to allow them to open up their services to new service users again...

Is it because men who have been raped by men would rather be in the company of women?

I work with sexual violence services. IME value a men-only service (although lots of the staff are women) because it makes them feel not so alone and not the only one. Being somewhere that is aimed at them is better than being the only man in a room full of women. The issues are different for both sexes.

That public statement doesn’t actually explain the reasons why the charity’s funding application was rated lower than other applications.

The charity or someone else could make a FOI request for the scores/reasons.

^ That was all my bolding above BTW

I find organisations that interchange ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ very confusing to know what they are really meaning- everyone in these organisations clearly DOES know there is a difference between biological sex and how you present yourself because they have eyes, ears and a brain... but instead they pretend not to see, hear or know what the majority of their fundraising donors in the population,(many of whom are very small children at school), will observe as the everyday reality of sexed physical difference which affects everyone. And is a fact regardless of anyone’s personal presentation. FFS.

Sexed physical difference, weaponised by gender, is obviously WHY girls and women desperately need Rape Crisis Scotland.

So when funders pretend not to know the difference between sex and gender, it makes it very very hard for anyone to decode what they actually are even referring to, much less understand how this issue is actually affecting their funding decisions. Sad

I think it would be interesting to know who is behind this withdrawal of funding. Similarly a woman's counselling service in brighton has to close because of funding cuts as it doesn't include men !!

This is the tweet with BBC CIN’s clear as mud statement on.

From the Scottish Daily Mail, 9.8.18 -

“The centre, founded in 1976, aims to provide support for girls aged 13 and over who have been raped, sexually assaulted or sexually abused at any point during their life.
It was the first centre of its kind to be set up north of the Border and the longest established rape crisis unit in the UK. Last year it worked with more than 1,700 women and received nearly 20,000 calls, texts and emails.

Over the past six years it has received £235,000 from Children in Need, which was used to hire a specialist offering support to young victims of sexual violence.”

The link below sets out the CIN grant-funded projects in Scotland ‘as at November 2017’.

It’s not clear (to me, at least) if the figures listed refer to all funding ever given by CIN to each charity, or if it’s just 2017 figures? For Rape Crisis Glasgow the figure listed is £135,222.

So basically CIN are giving hundreds of thousands to children who doubt their gender, but none who have experienced sexual violence and rape on account of their sexHmm

The easiest way to support children who doubt their gender is to explain that people can be whoever they want to be, wear what they want and call out the bullies who enforce stereotypes, as well as address the hierarchies between the sexes and the way these are enforced (of which rape and sexual violence is a key one).

But nope, somehow it is better to promote practices where young women bind their breasts and seek hormone treatments to delay puberty, and withdraw funding from charities that address the sex-based problems women face.

Funny that.

CardsforKittens · 10/08/2018 15:09

It will be interesting to see what CiN have decided to fund instead when they publish this year's list. I've sure there are a great many worthy projects, but according to media reports the project they put in jeopardy was run by Glasgow Rape Crisis to provide face to face support to teenage girls and to do rape prevention work in schools. I'm really struggling to imagine how such a project could find itself too far down the list.

SturdyEarmuffs · 10/08/2018 16:19

Pretty much sums it up doesn't it.

Their statement says nothing at all about their reasons for defunding an important service for women & girls.

theOtherPamAyres · 10/08/2018 16:34

Should women's and girl's services have to rely on unelected unaccountable charities for handouts?

Perhaps if Local Authorities, Police Authorities and NHS Commissioning Units ditched their 'gender' priority and actually looked at how they are serving the "sex" group, then women might get their fair share of grants.

Incidentally, CIN's website is not transparent. I don't know who staffs it, how many people are employed there, who the trustees are or how they arrive at decisions. Basic stuff for a multi-million charity taking millions from millions of donors and fundraisers.

SturdyEarmuffs · 10/08/2018 16:41

Very good point.

WeAreGerbil · 10/08/2018 17:51

The problem is local authorities don't give out grants anymore, they commission services to strict specifications, which may not be exactly what charities want to provide based on their knowledge of needs. Trusts and foundations enable organisations to determine their own services and be more innovative. Trouble is there isn't enough money to go around, public sector cuts have reduced income and increased demand, and Lottery income, one of the main funders of the voluntary sector has also gone down.

Labradoodliedoodoo · 11/08/2018 10:26

CIN no longer has my support

Labradoodliedoodoo · 11/08/2018 10:27

I hope this is picked up by the fail or times

Charliethefeminist · 11/08/2018 10:44

CIN no longer has my support. There'll be no angry TRA response to the 'women and girls' emphasis in the Whitton statement because it's designed to placate, undermine and distract feminists while money is shifted to TRA support from vulnerable teenage girls.

theOtherPamAyres · 11/08/2018 11:35

I see that CIN is being asked questions about its grants to Allsorts, on Twitter.

Good. Funding, endorsements and encouragement of dubious practices around children's exploration of gender, may come to bite them on the bottom.

I've now found the information on the Trustees and see that they include presenter Matt Baker and journalist (and brownie pack leader) Rosie Millard

WeWantJustice · 11/08/2018 16:56

I will never give a penny to Children in Need ever again

In fact, I've stopped giving to all big charities except Water Aid and women's charities like Rape Crisis and Refuge, on the basis that they're probably all run by rapists and if they aren't, they're probably giving most of the money I donate to men

Fuck em
