Julie Burchill on Brighton transpride and nonbinary affectation

Will post link below as can't remember how to do it when starting threads. I heard she was at the recent Women's Place event in Brighton, she mentions it but wrote this before the event. Would be interesting to hear what she thought of that too. I love a bit of Julie Burchill. Totally agree with her.

Ha I was at Brighton Pride this weekend and I really don't think the 100,000 or so people cheering and celebrating LGBT people were secretly worrying about Julie Burchill.

Her 'beef' with gay and bisexual people for the problems they face (she wouldn't know because she isn't gay or bisexual) is like a white person having 'beef' with black people for experiencing racism.

ReluctantCamper · 06/08/2018 13:11

Ah, you went to a corporate parade with lots of other people so don't need to back up your assertions? Okey dokey

Really hope you didn't study any essay based subjects

ReluctantCamper · 06/08/2018 13:12

Brilliant article Hackmum, thanks for linking

AngryAttackKittens · 06/08/2018 13:18

I thought a bunch of people went mostly to see Britney Spears...

(No accounting for taste, etc.)

hipsterfun · 06/08/2018 13:33

I enjoyed her Brexit ponces piece.

Provocative and funny.

The snowflakes quickly began demanding that London – Ponce Central – be allowed to secede from the rest of this churlish isle, with just a unicorn-shuttle-service to keep them connected to Scotland. The prospect of getting shot of 99 per cent of man-buns and clean-eaters in one fell swoop was almost parasexually thrilling, but as Suzanne Moore pointed out in an excellent piece in the Guardian, what did these Little Londoners plan to do with the whopping 40 per cent of Londoners who voted Leave? There are two nations in London itself, one doing the dirty work of the other, unseen and unheard...

jasminemaya · 06/08/2018 13:33

So the cheering rainbow coloured crowds lining the streets of Brighton on Saturday were all secret homophobes who just wanted to see Britney? Interesting theory.

ReluctantCamper · 06/08/2018 13:37

Still non the wiser about your actual views about the article Jasmine

I mean I know in Woke Land 'correct' opinions don't need to be justified, but it's good practice to be able to explain the reasoning behind your views.

Otherwise you just look like someone who follows prevailing opinions without reflecting on them or thinking for themselves

ReluctantCamper · 06/08/2018 13:39

Many people are idiots Jasmine

The fact that lots of people turned up to Pride doesn't prove much, and gives no information about the content of the article that is the subject of this thread....

Unknowndevice · 06/08/2018 13:41

jasminemaya I think you’ll find Charlotte Raven (Julie’s one time lesbian lover) may disagree with your assumption of Julie’s heterosexuality.

AngryAttackKittens · 06/08/2018 13:43

Who said anything about homophobes? I may not be a fan of Britney's music but I wouldn't accuse her fans of having questionable views on anything other than music.

EntropicTupperwareDrawer · 06/08/2018 13:53

It’s not the topic of this thread, but as it’s come up...Every single person I know who went to pride this weekend is straight. Not one of my gay friends and acquaintances went. make of that what you will!

hackmum · 06/08/2018 13:54

And don't let's forget Julie's novel about teenage lesbian love, Sugar Rush.

jasminemaya · 06/08/2018 13:55

My opinion on the article is it's trying too hard to be controversial.

Everyone is bored of feminists having a go at trans people so she thought she'd mix it up a bit by taking a pop at gay men and bisexuals too. She's just so edgy.

Discussing it isn't really worth the oxygen IMO but no I don't think the LGBTs of Brighton are quaking in their boots. Perhaps shaking their heads in pity that she's reduced herself to this.

FloralBunting · 06/08/2018 13:56

Of course, everyone who attends any Pride event nowadays is no more likely to be genuinely pro-LGB than they are homophobic, tbh. Because it's just a corporate festival for people who like rainbow merch and using lots of fun emojis on their social media.

But you bring them all up if you think they've got your back jasminemaya. It's got as much weight as me saying "All of Milton Keynes was out on Saturday having a lovely time in the sun and they all agree with me!"

AngryAttackKittens · 06/08/2018 13:58

Discussing it isn't really worth the oxygen IMO

And yet here you are, however many comments later.

ReluctantCamper · 06/08/2018 14:03

trying too hard to be controversial

Hang on a minute

A while ago you were throwing words like transphobia and homophobia around

Those are pretty serious accusations

I assume you're about to back them up, or have you changed your mind?

TheCountryGirl · 06/08/2018 14:07

How many ad hominem attacks on Julie do we have to read before getting an answer to Camper's questions?

Yes...such a miserable, vicious lot indeed.

ReluctantCamper · 06/08/2018 14:14

Don't really know why I'm defending JB, she could eviscerate me, being both smarter and nastier than I am

Just really hate people thinking it's ok to make daft statements and they won't be challenged because they're in line with prevailing wisdom

jasminemaya · 06/08/2018 14:16

FloralBunting I bet you a tenner if you asked any person at Pride this weekend if they were pro LGB they would say yes. Bit silly to suggest otherwise.

Reluctant Julie says in her article she has beef with gay and bisexual people being celebrated at Pride. I have beef with her writing that, especially as it's just to court controversy. I take it you weren't there? Perhaps you should come along next year and soak up some of the positive vibes.

ReluctantCamper · 06/08/2018 14:22

mmm

The point she was making is celebrating something you are rather than something you've achieved doesn't say much about you.

I'm mystified by people who claim to be proud to be a woman

ReluctantCamper · 06/08/2018 14:23

I don't think she was objecting to the celebration of gay and bi particularly

More celebration without achievement

ReluctantCamper · 06/08/2018 14:24

Pride is just a big, corporate party

Witness the outrage when get the L out tried to make it about homosexual rights

20nil · 06/08/2018 14:29

Thanks for posting this. I often find her deeply annoying but this is a gem.

jasminemaya · 06/08/2018 14:33

Reluctant

Less than 10 % of the population is gay or bisexual and historically (and often still today) it is seen as something shameful.

Ask any gay or bisexual person if they have ever been made to feel ashamed of who they are and I can guarantee the answer will be yes.

The point of Pride is to celebrate who you are. When a person has been made to feel ashamed of who they are I think it is a good and positive thing to have a weekend where they can feel proud.

I bet nobody has made JB feel ashamed of her sexuality...

TheCountryGirl · 06/08/2018 14:33

I must admit one time I felt pride at being a woman was when the story of Elisabeth Fritzl broke. She was so strong in the face of male domination and violence. I was so proud to share her sex. I couldn't understand why as SHE had come through this and not me. She represented how strong women are in the face of relentless cruelty from men.
