Transgender Lobsters

Seriously:

Lobsters are low-key kinda trans, they are gynandromorphic (can have both male and female characteristics)

This is important because:

Every year the trans flag is one of the most requested emojis

For unicode to ignore our community is almost like a form of erasure and stinks of transphobia, they see the proposals every year, they know its been the most requested emoji the last couple of years

So:

The new campaign, Claws Out For Trans, is encouraging people to sign its petition and use the lobster emoji

Hahaha.

Bonkers
And that’s a whole lot of pink in that pic

53rdWay · 03/08/2018 12:40

This is going to really confuse the Jordan Peterson fans.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 03/08/2018 12:44

It rather sticks in one's craw...

womanformallyknownaswoman · 03/08/2018 12:47

They need to abide by the claw

Racecardriver · 03/08/2018 12:51

I didn't realise lobsters had genders Confused

womanformallyknownaswoman · 03/08/2018 12:51

I bet they are krill seekers

nauticant · 03/08/2018 12:54

I didn't realise lobsters had genders

Lobsters often undergo a transition from blue to red (let's call it pink). Then they're yummy.

IAmInsignificunt · 03/08/2018 12:54

Now all I can think about is Phoebe in Friends “he’s her lobster!”

MeetTheNewAccountSameAsTheOld · 03/08/2018 13:08

"Case in point: the transgender flag.

Despite being the most requested emoji for two years in a row, Unicode has failed to create an image for the blue, white and pink flag and now people have had enough of waiting.

That’s exactly why activist, nail artist and author of To My Trans Sisters, Charlie Craggs, has started a campaign which criticises Unicode for introducing a lobster emoji this year, while simultaneously disregarding calls for the transgender flag."

Funny how the OP chose not to include that bit of the article in their cherry-picking. Almost as if including that bit wouldn't generate the posts they wanted.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 03/08/2018 13:10

It's almost as if these people don't have any genuine oppression to campaign against

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/08/2018 13:14

I'm sorry - how is that relevant? The lobster was chosen instead of other new emojis because it is "trans".

I had to "cherry pick" as reproducing the article in full would violate copyright. I summarised the story, and provided a link to the original. Unfortunately the story is ridiculous and no amount of cherry picking can hide that.

....is this satire?

MeetTheNewAccountSameAsTheOld · 03/08/2018 13:37

Beginning to think that you haven't read the article at all. Unicode chose the lobster instead of the trans flag. Unicode didn't choose the lobster because it was trans, and chose the lobster even though it was down the list of requested emojis.

So activists are using the newly released lobster symbol as satire to make a point to Unicode, and I'd imagine they'll continue to do so until Unicode pulls its collective head out its Peterson-fawning ass.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/08/2018 13:40

I'm beginning to think you didn't read the OP that states that:

  • Trans flag most requested emoji
  • Unicode ignoring requests for Trans flag is erasure
  • Activists using another new emoji to represent trans
  • Lobster emoji chosen as are "kinda trans"

Batshit

Waddlelikeapenguin · 03/08/2018 13:54

GrinGrinGrin i thought this was a piss take - it's funnier that it's true 😂
Of course they couldnt choose a mammal now could they because mammals cant change sex Star

2rebecca · 03/08/2018 14:20

I thought they didn't want to be recognised as trans because they're all real women now and TWAW.
Love the idea of Peterson fans and transwomen fighting over the lobsters.
Not sure I'd want something ugly, snippy and overhyped representing me but they obviously identify with them...

ElenOfTheWays · 03/08/2018 15:28

Dammit. Now I have 'Rock Lobster" as an earworm.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 03/08/2018 15:39

I thought it was satire as I'm afraid the first thing that popped into my head was Brass Eye and certain people having more genes in common with a crab (there's no real evidence but it is scientific fact). Which is a very unfortunate and in no way appropriate connection. So maybe they shouldn't encourage it.

FloralBunting · 03/08/2018 15:40

This clinches it. The most oppressed people in the entire universe don't have their very own emoji. The struggle is real!

LangCleg · 03/08/2018 15:40

It's the hill to die on.

redexpat · 03/08/2018 15:43

Best thread title ever!

womanformallyknownaswoman · 03/08/2018 17:05

Worse problem I ever had was not having an emoji designed for me or my underrepresented majority sex.

I was remarking earlier in a message how none of the emoji feelings matches up to what I see in the face or how I use them. I find many of them very stereotyped and there are no overtly feminist ones ♀️♀️

I think if women designed them all they'd be different

eg

Transgender Lobsters
Transgender Lobsters
Transgender Lobsters
FloralBunting · 03/08/2018 17:14

I think this whole thing is the epitome of literal violence. And it's really made this thread a special experience to have a TRA come in and underline that this terrible injustice of no Transflag emoji has been responded to by co-opting an unrelated emoji and making that a trans emoji instead. Because that how TRAs roll. Wink

And yes, I am mocking you. Because seriously, did any of you honestly think this kind of thing would elicit sympathetic coos and stroking?

birdbandit · 03/08/2018 17:14

Eye roll emoji.
