Well done to Yvette Cormier for continuing to fight against Planet Fitness's decision to penalise her for pointing out that there was a man in the women's changing room.

Unfortunately they still used that phrase 'assigned biologically male'.
No one is 'assigned' male or female. They just are.

Dragoncake · 31/07/2018 16:57

This is good news. I expect to see similar court cases here.

I agree that businesses should behave in whatever way they think best WRT single sex facilities. So long as their policies are completely clear to consumers. 'Unisex' or 'single sex' will suffice. It's the obfuscation and lack of consent that is problematic.

Agreed.

There was another case where a judge ruled that it is legal to exclude trans women, where you would expect a space or service to be women only.

''In a final order filed last week, a judge wrote that in most circumstances — say, if Love had been denied a seat at a restaurant, a room at a hotel or an opportunity at her place of employment — her case could have merit.
But adding sex to the equation changes things, according to the judge.''

Again with the “assigned male at birth” shite.

YaLoVeras · 31/07/2018 17:13

Good news

theOtherPamAyres · 31/07/2018 18:15

It annoyed the writer that the court persisted in using the phrase "men who self identified as women" and did not mention transgender once.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 31/07/2018 18:19

I prefer “men who self ID as women”, tbh. Does exactly what it says on the tin.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 31/07/2018 18:25

Meanwhile, over the border in Canada, a man has legally registered as female (with a letter from his doctor as supporting evidence) solely to save $1100 on his car insurance (he says this outright).

I'm beginning to think that they are just bonkers in Canada.

It annoyed the writer that the court persisted in using the phrase "men who self identified as women" and did not mention transgender once.

On the other hand it pleased me very much.

heresyandwitchcraft · 31/07/2018 18:48

Is this an honest-to-God example of "the basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way?" So common sense DOES exist!

JessBradleysInvisibleCock · 31/07/2018 18:58

It's written by Zack Ford. Def not GC.

WeAreGerbil · 31/07/2018 19:03

It would all be so much clearer if rooms were labelled Penis and No Penis

I spotted some toilets in a bus station in Spain marked XX and XY. I wondered whether that was anything to do with the trans debate.

Ereshkigal · 31/07/2018 19:05

Nice NC Grin

moimichme · 31/07/2018 19:32

As someone with ties to Michigan, I very much hope she (and common sense) prevails!

placemats · 31/07/2018 19:35

I have to say well done that woman!

xx to all you lovely women

xy to all you lovely men

placemats · 31/07/2018 19:39

I didn't assign my children at birth. Nor did the midwife attending. Nor did their father.

Their sex was observed.

Maybe we need to start writing to all gyms to compel them to state whether they have mixed sex changing rooms or not

iamawoman · 31/07/2018 19:46

Omg - so men could get cheaper car insurance why saying they are women. Now that is going to irk the insurance companies and the general public when everyones premiums go up to account for a rise in bad female drivers

TerfsUp · 31/07/2018 19:49

Hooray!

Ihuntmonsters · 31/07/2018 19:56

The only caveat I'd give to this case is that the gym in question had an 'unwritten policy' of welcoming men who self ID as women into their women's changing room. I suspect that if they had had some 'small print' to fall back on, however hidden they might well have been fine.

Ihuntmonsters · 31/07/2018 19:58

NB the cheaper car insurance issue is not relevant to the UK as this was determined as discrimination so cheaper rates are no longer offered to women.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 31/07/2018 20:13

No more Sheilas Wheels?

sanluca · 31/07/2018 20:14

I think this is great. Fine if you include transwomen in changing rooms for women, but just say clearly changing rooms are unisex. Then I can make an informed choice.

When will organisations, government and the general public realise the debate is about informed consent and boundaries?

I always call them out online: so you mean unisex? And has the proper risk assesment into consequences for all parties been done? Always always deadly silence.
