When you see threads plopped into FWR, especially the curious repeat of well worn subjects, I recommend you check for poster history before engaging.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads being referenced on twitter with screen shots & flagging in either MNHQ or outlets to try & get articles commissioned.

OP posts:
AssassinatedBeauty · 27/09/2018 20:03

I'd definitely go for the Bunbury reference, subtle yet effective!

VickyEadie · 27/09/2018 20:05

Assassinated

I think so! Someone else suggested the word Bunbury, but I thought referring to this great gender theorist would show the mods that it's not just a Weetabix word. Especially if we add a bit of Germaine's real theory...

dolorsit · 27/09/2018 20:07

It's the talk with dd one. Someone has just posted a rather pithy response.

VickyEadie · 27/09/2018 20:12

dolorsit

Jeez. It's as easy as that, isn't it?

VickyEadie · 27/09/2018 20:51

The troll is back.

LittleLebowski · 27/09/2018 20:53

Very busy all of a sudden! I guess it's blowback from Posie's magnificent performance on Sky News yesterday.

heresyandwitchcraft · 27/09/2018 20:54

Is this the penis one?
If so, the troll is a liar, too. The biggest penis in the world is 13.5 inches, so poster would be jumping up and down and running to the Guinness Book of World Records if he had a 15 incher. And then they'd inadvertently be outing their identity on Mumsnet... Sigh.

LittleLebowski · 27/09/2018 20:56

GrinHeresy! (We met outside the magistrates yesterday by the way - hello again!)

heresyandwitchcraft · 27/09/2018 21:11

Smile Hello! 'Twas brief but a total delight! If I had to choose a "Gulag" posse, the gender-critical crowd would be the one to pick. Full of women and actual feminist allies. Strong, brave, smart, hilarious, caring, and creative people. Perhaps we can covertly peak-trans the guards Wink?

arranfan · 27/09/2018 21:12

Ah, I see that the fluid post has garnered many, many responses as the researchers would have predicted.

It's obviously a massively successful gambit.

I wonder if there are some people who adopted the researchers' paper as a manual or, How to guide.

arranfan · 27/09/2018 22:37

Those researchers are uncanny! I've just seen that MNHQ has commented on the gender fluid thread:

We're not convinced the OP is being entirely truthful here. We're going to remove this thread now.

heresyandwitchcraft · 27/09/2018 22:49

I am a little confused, arran as today has made my senses quite dull and tin foil hat is ON. Would you mind explaining the researcher angle? MNHQ mentioned there would be people accessing data from the forums, but do you think that these posts are being set up on the feminist forum just to prompt a reaction from us? And not actually just trolls?

arranfan · 27/09/2018 22:59

No - apologies for the confusion.

A while ago, I posted about some research findings about posters who disrupt online communities. The experience on MN FWR would tend to confirm the researchers' findings about disruptive posters. It does look feasible to spot a poster who is posting in bad faith within 5-10 posts and to predict patterns of behaviour.

For various reasons, I think MN would make an interesting follow-up project.

I know we're not supposed to suggest on individual threads that posters might not be acting in good faith. So my (ineffective) way around it is to bump this PSA thread by reflecting on the researchers and their findings.

heresyandwitchcraft · 27/09/2018 23:07

Thanks for clarifying! I think I have read your previous post on the matter but am now very tired, and in a perpetual state of questioning things. You're doing a splendid job of educating me on totalitarianism and social disruption today.

FloralBunting · 28/09/2018 00:28

While I am pleased to see less gender fluid on the forum, I am sad to see the thread has gone for the sole reason that my parting comment was the rudest insult I've ever given and felt like sweeping out of the room like Bette Davis, instead of slinking off to confession.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 28/09/2018 00:35

I missed it FloralBunting. I was reading the thread and it whooshed. I suppose it means I can reuse my pancelibate joke.

I am a great admirer of Germaine Bunbury, in particular her classic work, “The woman that never was”.

Ereshkigal · 28/09/2018 06:35

Glad I bookmarked the lentil bake recipe!

deepwatersolo · 28/09/2018 07:08

arran do you have the study link at hand? Does it say, how to spot it? And are these derailer techniques used by deliberate derailers, or is it more like a commenter type with a particular personality/style? (Disclosure: I believe, I might have a tendency to derail inadvertently, because I get bogged down on particular aspects, tangents...).

arranfan · 28/09/2018 10:01

deepwatersolo - the study is about posters who are eventually banned for their disruptive activities. I've reproduced my previous post from back when we had a poster who was tastelessly producing posts riddled with implausible errors and then claiming dyslexia.

My understanding is that disruptive commenters are disruptive everywhere.

I completely understand about being caught up by the details of something and then wondering whether it counts as a merail/derail/or interesting tangent. Blush

-----

A research project involving Cornell and Stanford looked at ways to automate the classification of particular categories of poster: Antisocial Behavior in Online Discussion Communities

cs.stanford.edu/people/jure/pubs/trolls-icwsm15.pdf

The researchers highlighted implausibly poor spelling and punctuation as characteristics of such posts. These posts tend to score a difficult readability index.

Aside from the interesting research issues, it's disrespectful to people with specific learning disabilities and it's a mess for posters like Hot Rocker who rely upon screen reading software.

This video sums up the research findings and highlights the characteristics of: Bad grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/09/2018 12:00

it's disrespectful to people with specific learning disabilities

Isn't it just? People I know IRL and here with dyslexia, for instance, often seem to make a particular effort to write in a way that can be understood (even if not perfect) - presumably they're going to have particular difficulties themselves comprehending unclear posts themselves.

Even if there's no ill intent, writing unclearly through sheer carelessness if you don't have any LD is IMO pretty inconsiderate. It takes more time and effort for every reader. I don't think my time and mental effort writing a post is more important than the cumulative time and deciphering strain of everyone who is reading a thread. There used to be a prolific poster, whose posts often were worth reading but she wrote like Eric Morecambe played the piano, all the right letters in the wrong order, they were a bit of a pain to read. (I used to be able to simulate this style but autocorrect makes it hard - there's much less excuse for bad spelling nowadays.)

silentcrow · 29/09/2018 01:53

Bump o'clock in the morning...

arranfan · 29/09/2018 07:58

It is going to be interesting to discern new posters who have joined because of recent events and differentiate from community disruptors.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/09/2018 08:35

You can tell which device I am posting on. Short sentences with capitals=phone. Longer sentences with no capitals = computer.

Research sounds interesting.

VickyEadie · 29/09/2018 08:43

I wasn't here last night (too bust reading more of the excellent work by seminal gender theorist Germaine Bunbury), but the usual happened, I see.

FermatsTheorem · 29/09/2018 14:27

I love Germaine Bunbury. Her work needs to be publicised much more widely.
