www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jul/28/migrant-children-selling-sex-to-escape-from-italy-to-france-says-"charity

Fuck sake, they will be calling them 'sex workers' next.

The Guardian is a hopeless piece of trash now. I can't believe they are calling paedophilia and rape, prostitution. It's sick.

I remember when the Guadian employed decent journalists. They're a bloody train wreck now.

AntiqueOlive · 28/07/2018 15:12

I'm trying to find the original report or media release by Save the Children and can't. Anyone help?

AntiqueOlive · 28/07/2018 15:14

aha! I think this is it

www.savethechildren.it/sites/default/files/files/rapporto%20young%20invisible%20enslaved%20DEF.pdf

Going to read it and then comment -

AntiqueOlive · 28/07/2018 15:15

no it's not. That was published July 2017

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/07/2018 15:19

No, The Guardian, they are being raped

I'd go one further and say,
men are raping migrant children.

AntiqueOlive · 28/07/2018 15:36

I think that might be the report AB -

ok, I think what's happened here is that the Guardian have picked up an Agency article from an Italian press conference linked to the publication of the report.

Save the Children themselves don't generally use the phrase prostitution - they are very clear its sexual exploitation however all the news outlets are using the same turn of phrase which makes me believe its pretty much a copy and paste of an agency article.

So not Guardian journalists as such - just lazy journalism.

pachyderm · 28/07/2018 16:12

Save the Children's own cred is somewhat damaged after the Saint Brendan scandal unfortunately.

AntiqueOlive · 28/07/2018 16:31

sorry - forgot to say "thank you " for the link AB

Yes, Save the Children's reputation has been damaged which is a shame because there is a huge amount of good work being done too both on the ground and in raising awareness.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 28/07/2018 16:37

The misogyny in the rewriting of history to erase abusive men from the picture should be prosecutable.

silentcrow · 28/07/2018 16:44

I've just seen someone on Twitter react to this REALLY IMPORTANT PIECE ON CHILD ABUSE by claiming The Guardian "publishes a lot of anti-trans stuff" and "is mostly owned by conservatives".

I don't know what to do with all this sloppy language and double-think. I feel like Alice in Wonderland.

AntiqueOlive · 28/07/2018 16:46

www.savethechildren.it/press/tratta-e-sfruttamento-nel-mondo-10-milioni-di-bambini-un-solo-anno-vittime-di-lavoro-forzato

Actually I think it might be this one.

Child prostitution and child porn are both terms which airbrush the true picture which is child sexual abuse. And both phrases should be written out of responsible reporting.

WickedLazy · 28/07/2018 16:51

"migrant children had been forced to live on the streets in “degrading, promiscuous and dangerous conditions”

Promiscuous?! Angry

genderskeptic · 28/07/2018 17:26

this makes me so disgusted and furious! these people are fleeing war that WE started, and their countries are becoming uninhabitable because of climate change that is OUR fault! The US Military is the world's largest polluter! They should be welcomed and given homes, and the opportunity to work if they want it.

thebewilderness · 28/07/2018 21:35

It is amazing the terrible things the media reports that happen to women and children, that they either do to themselves or is done by the absent referent. This is what institutionalized misogyny looks like.

UpstartCrow · 28/07/2018 21:58

A thing happened, it's an absolute mystery how or why, or how to make it stop.

pachyderm · 28/07/2018 22:50

It's a bit like the reports of women in refugee camps like the one in Calais, being at constant "risk of rape and sexual assault." They don't ever frame it as "Men raping vulnerable women", preferring to use the passive voice.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/07/2018 23:31

men rape children. not children prostituting themselves.. paedophiles raping children.

BirthCanal · 28/07/2018 23:54

Very few posters here. Come on this is disgusting.

LassWiADelicateAir · 28/07/2018 23:57

The link in the opening post no longer works.

AssassinatedBeauty · 28/07/2018 23:59

The link in the third post (by BirthCanal) is still working.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/07/2018 00:00

Very few posters here.

You know what's happened to me? Years ago I thought men raping children was rare. And gangs of men doing it was vanishingly rare. I worked for SS and realised it was more common. Then the Catholic church and residential school and the BBC and on and on. Oh the charities. And it's everywhere, Australia, Thailand, US, Canada... No one is immune. Even the 'nice' countries.

I have no clue how to stop men raping children. They are everywhere and in every walk of life and they're in charge. And every time someone on AIBU is worried about leaving their child with an unknown man, everyone is all, "oh no, you're paranoid, you see bogeymen everywhere". Nope. It's really fucking common.

BirthCanal · 29/07/2018 00:00

I posted a link just below

OlennasWimple · 29/07/2018 00:02

Urgh

I have gone from disappointment in the Guardian over the years to now actively disliking it
