"Migrant children 'prostituting' themselves" - No, The Guardian, they are being raped

www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jul/28/migrant-children-selling-sex-to-escape-from-italy-to-france-says-"charity

Fuck sake, they will be calling them 'sex workers' next.

The Guardian is a hopeless piece of trash now. I can't believe they are calling paedophilia and rape, prostitution. It's sick.

Yes it is sadly. The police cannot keep up with cyberporn they have to just go after the creators of the stuff. Which means the market is kept going. Which means the creators keep creating it. Which means...

BirthCanal · 29/07/2018 00:09

Truly it's not the fault of the police. I have discussed it with them. It is a question of putting resources in place and, frankly, I'm not sure (as a lefty) that I particularly see any party standing up for kids in this particular way. Sadly, they appear to believe that trans people are the most vulnerable in society. Sod the kids, the elderly, and the disabled.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/07/2018 00:14

It is a question of putting resources in place

I have a friend, male Police Officer who did this for a while. It completely messed his life up. He kept asking for a transfer because he couldn't cope but no one would replace him. What sane person wants to watch child sex abuse for hours? And they have to to get a conviction.

GrainneWail · 29/07/2018 00:16

I tweeted about this on another newspaper's reprint of this story. It's disgusting and horrifying that they aren't saying children are being raped.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 29/07/2018 00:25

They really don't have a fucking hope in hell if they're being treated like this by the media, men and the charities that are supposed to help them.

This brings tears to my eyes - for all the help they'll do them.

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/07/2018 00:55

This might be closer to the original report.

www.agensir.it/mondo/2018/07/27/ten-million-young-slaves-in-the-world-survival-sex-cases-in-ventimiglia-street-prostitution-and-labour-exploitation/

Not sure why The Guardian changed this

Save the Children workers registered the presence of high numbers of children in degraded, humiliating and dangerous conditions on the streets,

to

“degrading, promiscuous and dangerous conditions”

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/07/2018 01:00

Not sure why The Guardian changed this

You would think journalists would, at least, care about words.

Oswin · 29/07/2018 01:09

Fucks sake. Words fucking matter.

BirthCanal · 29/07/2018 01:42

This is the nail in the coffin for the guardian. People need to be told: this needs to go the the press complaints commission surely?

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/07/2018 02:04

Actually looking at it again The Guardian report might be a more accurate translation. The original Italian report said

in molti casi ritrovandosi a vivere in condizioni di grande degrado e promiscuità

The article by Patrizia Caiffa on the website I linked changed promiscuous to humiliating.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/07/2018 02:19

Female noun. Interestingly.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/07/2018 02:20

Mind you. So are farce, power and lots of other good words.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/07/2018 02:20

Force FFS.

MacaroonMama · 29/07/2018 07:51

Awful. I cannot stand the Guardian any more. And to think there are all these press guidelines about using ‘preferred gender’ for male sex criminals (sorry poor wording, haven’t had second cup of tea yet) but they cannot day that children are being raped and abused. ‘Selling sex’? Absolute pile of crap.

I will be writing to the PCC about this. Inaccurate and dangerous.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/07/2018 07:58

"Promiscuous"??! FFS, evil bastards who wrote that, at least try to look like decent human beings.

The Guardian used to be a decent paper. Younger me who used to read it all the time would never imagine it would one day hit the level of total abandonment of anything resembling a principle where it would be describing children fleeing war being preyed upon by men as "prostituting themselves".

bonitabonita · 29/07/2018 08:00

Let’s rephrase it:

‘Men are raping migrant children’

There you go guardian.

Hoovermanoevre · 29/07/2018 08:08

This is disgraceful . The guardian is a shameful rag of shit. Does anyone read the articles before they're published? I decided to banish the guardian twelve years ago thank fuck.

Hoovermanoevre · 29/07/2018 08:17

Press complaints commission .
Surely this will be the article that brings this paper down.

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/07/2018 10:29

What do you think you are going to complain about to press complaints commission?

The Guardian report is a translation of the Save the Children report. The expression "prostitute themselves" is in it. The word "promiscuous" is in the original report (although the report by another journalist which I linked to chose to change it)

Girls crossing the border of Ventimiglia between Italy and France, mostly from the Horn of Africa and the countries of Africa-sub-Saharan Africa, were victims of so-called “survival sex”, i.e. forced to prostitute themselves to pay between 50 and 150 euros to ‘passeurs’ to cross the border, or to obtain food or shelter

www.savethechildren.it/press/tratta-e-sfruttamento-nel-mondo-10-milioni-di-bambini-un-solo-anno-vittime-di-lavoro-forzato.

Here is the English translation but omitting the word "promiscuous"

www.agensir.it/mondo/2018/07/27/ten-million-young-slaves-in-the-world-survival-sex-cases-in-ventimiglia-street-prostitution-and-labour-exploitation/

hackmum · 29/07/2018 10:36

The Press Complaints Commission hasn't existed for several years.

hackmum · 29/07/2018 10:41

Also, this story isn't nearly as bad as people are making out. It's clearly based on the wording of the Save the Children report, as Lass says. And it's very obvious from the story that the children are being exploited (the word "exploit" or "exploited" is used four times) and that this is not a choice being freely made. If the word "rape" had been used, it wouldn't have been clear that this was a financial transaction.

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/07/2018 10:43

I was just quoting another poster. It is now the Independent Press Standards Organisation. The point stands - what basis is there for a complaint?

The Guardian printed a translation of the Save the Children report- it didn't write this.

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/07/2018 10:58

I agree hackmum

The wording posters want re rape is for an opinion/comment/piece, not a news article. The Guardian is reporting using the words in the Save the Children report.

pachyderm · 01/08/2018 11:23

They changed it, look at the note on the bottom! A small victory for those of us who complained.

GrainneWail · 01/08/2018 21:25

Excellent work everyone who complained.
