Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Trans women are women, is the biggest oxymoron ever written.

If trans women are women, then why do the words trans women exist? I don't understand how law can not be written in a way that recognises women as women and trans women as trans women.

Thus trans women are treated with respect and dignity, and so are women. This blurring of the lines is helping no one.

Who ever claimed that trans women are women? Unless we can differentiate between the 2 there will always be conflict. Is it too late for reality to kick in here?

BarrackerBarmer Maybe do some reading? There are some excellent, very accessible, articles from TheQueerness. Or (as you clearly have time on your hands) try Burton, Lester, Dawson, Serano, Kaveney et al. As a cis woman, I found these helped me to understand a little better the oppression faced by our trans sisters. Thrilled, of course, to use your pronouns. Which are what, please?

LangCleg · 30/07/2018 16:28

From the forum rules:

That said, it’s clear that most trans people find the use of pronouns or names that they or others have consciously rejected, to be hurtful and would therefore struggle to engage in a discussion with those who insist on using them. The same is true of the expression ‘Trans-Identified Male’ or ‘TIM’. Likewise, many feminists are affronted by the term ‘cis’ and ‘terf’, so using these terms will make civil debate less likely. As we’ve said, context is everything – but it’s likely that going forward our moderation team will delete these expressions.

Please don't use prohibited terms hereabouts. Doing so may see your posts deleted and three deletions within a six week period may result in your posting privileges withdrawn.

I love the do some reading/educate yourself suggestions.

It’s ‘doing some reading’ that makes it obvious that Transwomen are not eat much like cervix-having-women at all.

BettyDuMonde · 30/07/2018 16:37

Not very much like

Ereshkigal · 30/07/2018 16:39

I for one have no desire to read Serano whine about how straight men were more open to sex than lesbians.

BettyDuMonde · 30/07/2018 16:42

I’m using the time I have on my hands to educate myself about pronouns...

BettyDuMonde · 30/07/2018 16:43

Can I be ‘it’ please?

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 30/07/2018 16:47

oppression faced by our trans sisters

This is FWR, where we talk about female experiences and rights.

Why would someone posting on here need to be educated on the the experiences on your 'trans sisters"?

And it's quite telling that all you talk about is 'trans sister', I take it female transpeople and their struggles are irrelevant to you?

catkind · 30/07/2018 16:50

women's changing room is home.

BettyDuMonde · 30/07/2018 16:55

Phew! Luckily my biology (not my pronoun) means I can chase you in there, Catkind!

My husband was told off for calling a dog ‘it’ by a total stranger at a vegan wedding on Saturday (as in ‘it’s a very cute dog’ not as in ‘it looks tasty’ btw). I berated him all day for not having the wherewithal to immediately declare said dog ‘non-binary’ 🙊

Is it not enough that we are forced to accept that snapdragons are dragons without having to take on board new relatives?

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 30/07/2018 17:14

Is it not enough that we are forced to accept that snapdragons are dragons without having to take on board new relatives?

Grin. And who needs new relatives?

AngryAttackKittens · 30/07/2018 17:17

My pronouns are "I'm sorry for calling you cis" and "this is silly".

AngryAttackKittens · 30/07/2018 17:18

(Note that I am taking the piss and not actually calling anyone cis, HQ - don't smite me!)

Hangingaroundtheportal · 30/07/2018 17:22

😂

Bowlofbabelfish · 30/07/2018 17:23

That’ll be because trans women are women, I expect.

Gosh. Do you believe humans can change sex?

Once the identity deniers stop...

Identity denier...

What does that actually mean delendaest (what must be destroyed by the way?) ? It sounds like waffle to me. What does it mean? It sounds like thoughtcrime in some way, certainly bad, but what IS it?

Bowlofbabelfish · 30/07/2018 17:24

My husband was told off for calling a dog ‘it’ by a total stranger at a vegan wedding on Saturday (as in ‘it’s a very cute dog’ not as in ‘it looks tasty’ btw).

I’m dying laughing at this. I can just imagine it.

Hangingaroundtheportal · 30/07/2018 17:25

Are you referring to the raging homophobe Juno Dawson there? I think I'll pass thanks.

AngryAttackKittens · 30/07/2018 17:25

That just makes me think of those people who get their dog neutered and then get fake balls implanted so everyone will still know it's a male dog.

TransplantsArePlants · 30/07/2018 17:25

Anyone else think of tights when they see "denier"?

ErrolTheDragon · 30/07/2018 17:26

Is it not enough that we are forced to accept that snapdragons are dragons without having to take on board new relatives?

I'm not related to flowers.Hmm ThanksDragon

AngryAttackKittens · 30/07/2018 17:26

Dunno who Burton and Lester are, but I've read Serano and let's just say demanding that people read their work may not turn out the way you'd hoped.

TransplantsArePlants · 30/07/2018 17:26

denier/denier
potato/potahto
man/woman

Let's call the whole thing off

Bowlofbabelfish · 30/07/2018 17:27

Anyone else think of tights when they see "denier"?

If I felt more on point there’d be a joke about thickness and opacity there somewhere

TransplantsArePlants · 30/07/2018 17:29

...and ladders Bowl

Let's put some thought into it.
