Bullied out

No links to sites I'd want to drive traffic to but info on Twitter etc.

Maybe the film won't be made.

@Bumbongo

lol. I saw the Maxine Peake Hamlet but tbh i was a bit disappointed because she set up all her body language to be male.

the person who said "Unless you are a bank robber, you cannot play the part of a bank robber in a film."

I actually had to pull out that line with an ex-friend - she of "wolf is a whistle is compliment" thinking - I posted in the pub about the break up because in terms of red lines, she was so anti-feminist I was really struggling to be open minded with her. Anyway, one day she was trying to argue that actors aren't entitled to any privacy, and gave an example of one actor portraying a wholesome family man "so we need to be told if he cheats" and I said "er, you do realise he's played bank robbers and drug dealers - do you expect to find him selling weed round the corner? has he failed if he doesn't do this?"

sorry, anecdotal, just reminded me.

I also can't see any transmen actors complaining about the role not being given to them, but I don't feel like transmen make themselves visible anyway - I can well imagine why.

Lea Delaria would have been the obvious choice for the role. It seems a particularly cloth-eared vanity project for Johannesen to cast herself.

Rennster · 14/07/2018 12:07

What I don’t get is why ScarJo is a “white privileged cis woman” taking roles from transmen (if this character even WAS a trans man) while Dwayne Johnson is “honouring” amputees in Skyscraper?
I wish I had the nerve to post this anywhere else but here....

therealposieparker · 14/07/2018 12:22

This person was a butch lesbian, I wish the trans community would stop transing dead women.

IcedPurple · 14/07/2018 16:21

ScarJo was most likely cast because she's a proven box office draw and filmmakers do want people to go see their films.

Outside of her franchise films - where the actors aren't really important - Scarlett really isn't a box office draw. Her last film was a major flop. Anyway, she's a producer on the project so she basically cast herself.

Anywa, I'm the opposite of a ScarJo fan. She's a bad actress imho, and the Sodastream fiasco showed that she's also a very self-centered and vapid person. And I've never really understood her 'beauty' - take away all the smoke and mirrors and she's fairly average imho.

All that said... it's absolute nonsense that only a trans person can play a trans character. By the same token, only 'cis' (ugh!) actors can play 'cis' characters, so you've eliminated trans actors from the vast vast majority of roles right there. ScarJo should not play this part not because she is 'cis' but because she is a mediocre actress.
Even so

shitsgettingreal · 14/07/2018 16:28

I think trans actors should play trans roles. Having "cis" actors just makes it look like transpeople always end up "passing" extraordinarily well, which is a lie to desperate kids as much as anyone else.

Soon we will reach the point where the only kind of lesbian that is allowed to exist is the heterosexual male kind.

LaSquirrel · 14/07/2018 22:33

Remember the stick that Jared Leto got for Dallas Buyers Club?
Apparently he is still getting stick for it

But I recall from clips at the time, Leto had at least one scene in manface, before putting on womanface. The thing of it is, if they had cast a 'transwoman' in the role, there would be no shooting of the character in manface, would there?

LaSquirrel · 14/07/2018 22:34

Soon we will reach the point where the only kind of lesbian that is allowed to exist is the heterosexual male kind.

London Pride's reaction would say that we are already there.

TheGoddessFrigg · 15/07/2018 09:20

So a woman can't play a woman who dressed as a man? Instead they are going to get a man to play a butch lesbian?

So a man playing a woman who dresses like a man. And this is somehow more 'authentic'.
Perhaps we will just stop women appearing in films, like Shakespeare's time.

PositivelyPERF · 15/07/2018 13:26

I was looking forward to seeing this film, as the character being played, sounded very smart, in now they succeeded in such a brutal environment. Don’t get me wrong, in no way do I agree with the criminal and brutal aspect of what she did, but blimey she was one tough woman. However, if they put a trans person in the role, I’ll not waste my money. It’s just one more example of stepping on lesbians and encouraging young lesbians, in the mistaken belief, that they must be trans.

Magpiesarehuge · 15/07/2018 13:43

Mark Rufffalo and Matt Bommer got a lot of criticism and abuse when TW actor Jen Richards sounded off big time on Twitter about Matt Bomer playing a TW and how disgusting it was that cismen thought they could or had the right to play the roles of TW. Only Transfolk should represent or play transfolk. Doesn't seem to occur to them that women might think many transwomen are an offensive parody of women. Again it seemed to be lost on Jen that many women might have the same problem with men who think they are women - appropriating everything female - including jobs, awards, scholarships, sporting awards etc.

Tbh I have no sympathy for SJ after that role she took of an Asian in Ghost in the Shell.
