Why Cis not trans??

Whisky2014 · 13/07/2018 09:56

So transwomen suggest women should call ourselves cis women yet they dont want to be called a trans woman. Thats hyprocrotical isnt it? Clearly they see a need for us and them to be seperated...since it's they who thought up "cis". So why not instead just use trans?

This is how you know that person wants to be the default and wants to other you.

Whisky2014 · 13/07/2018 10:24

But we would know that using woman and trans woman. No "cis" required, yeh?

Fully agree, we don't need a stupid adjective to define us, we are women full stop.

longtimelurkingtrans · 13/07/2018 10:55

The cis adjective irks me. A woman is a woman no need for a prefix, I use the Trans prefix because that's what I am a Trans woman/female and I feel it is derogatory to women.

BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 13/07/2018 10:57

I believe it is because of the concept of "cis-privilege"

BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 13/07/2018 10:58

If we were the same, people who use cis wouldn't be considered more oppressed and specialer

WidowWadman · 13/07/2018 10:59

Cis is a useful term when there's a need to differentiate between cis and trans women, if talking about stuff that affects all women in general, neither adjective is needed. So it's entirely dependent on context. Why some people find that offensive I will never understand.

BeyondRadicalisationPortal · 13/07/2018 11:00

Cis is a useful term when differentiating between isomers.
I am not an isomer of female, with the other isomer including male - I am just female.

ADastardlyThing · 13/07/2018 11:07

Cis is not required as a differentiator.

Women.

Transwomen.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 13/07/2018 11:12

Because: oppwession

LangCleg · 13/07/2018 11:13

It's because male supremacists are allowed to coercively assign but doctors aren't.

UpstartCrow · 13/07/2018 11:14

WidowWadman Your comment makes no sense.
If all women are women, there cannot be any need to differentiate between us.

BaronessEllaSaturday · 13/07/2018 11:18

My biology states I'm a woman.

My gender identity if you have to label it states I'm trans

Calling me a ciswoman would be incorrect as I do not identify as female I just am.

Snappity · 13/07/2018 11:20

I agree. MumsNet should treat both groups equally ie both groups should simply be termed "Women"

BaronessEllaSaturday · 13/07/2018 11:30

But we are not the same. Biologically we are different and that biology affects all aspects of our lives. It's biology which causes women to suffer oppression and it's due to that oppression that we need extra protection put in place to try to counter it.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 13/07/2018 11:30

Women are adult human females
Transwomen are adult human males

No confusion there. The transwomen are a subset of men.

Trans being short for transition.
Cis is for isomers.

FloralCup · 13/07/2018 11:35

Agree there is no need for it. I'm sure most people just translate it as 'real' anyway.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 13/07/2018 11:36

You can't redefine 'transwoman' as 'woman' i.e. human female because 'woman' is a fixed, biological reality that has global recognition and is understandable in the past, present and future and across species boundaries - a dog that eg doesn't like one human sex will respond to a transwoman as a man. Mammalian sex is binary and that won't change.

ADastardlyThing · 13/07/2018 11:36

I don't understand snappity, how do you suggest we differentiate when we need to make it clear we are talking about a man who wants to be a woman?

Hideandgo · 13/07/2018 11:40

I agree with Widow. It rarely needs to be used but occasionally is needed to differentiate. No big insult.

seafret · 13/07/2018 12:26

Oh sure hideandgo and WidowWadman, assume my gender identity why don't you. And commit literal violence..

How do you know where on the gender spectrum other women fall, just becasue they don't describe themselves as male. You can only accurately call them female or women or if you must cis-sex, but then that assumes they are also compfortable with their sexed body which many women aren't, so again, you can only say women or female without making assumptions.

LastTrainEast · 13/07/2018 19:16

Hideandgo How about if I identify as 'Hideandgo' and you can be cis-Hideandgo so people won't be confused?

Snappity · 13/07/2018 19:25

That really is the linguistic equivalent of saying that gay and lesbian couples cannot marry because the meaning of the word "marriage" is fixed.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/07/2018 19:40

It really isn't. 'Marriage' is a cultural phenomenon, which differs according to place and time. Sex isn't... well, unless you're talking evolutionary timescales.Grin

Ereshkigal · 13/07/2018 19:46

Indeed!
