I'm trying to think of analogies here. Someone who claims to be a Christian but doesn't believe in God, thinks all this loving your neighbour and charity nonsense is overdone and that what Christianity actually needs is more selfishness. Or someone who claims to be a Marxist but believes in private property, the profit motive, screwing the poor and free market economics.

I think that's the sort of sense in which Fluuterby is a feminist.

Flutterby1891 · 12/07/2018 18:59

Sophocles.

The description "feminist" covers a very broad range of identities nowadays. My personal opinion is undoubtedly a very cynical one which will likely burn bridges for me on here, but I honestly think that alongside the wonderful women who are dedicated to improving things for womenkind there are lots of freeloaders who just enjoy victim status and the moral superiority it gives them.

One would reason that most people who are truly oppressed would have empathy for other oppressed groups but this doesn't seem to run true with a lot of feminists, many of whom become outraged when invited to check their privilege in deference to group more oppressed than themselves. A recent example was the Muslim (I think) new poster who mentioned white feminism and was piled on and literally told to "fuck off" - and by long time respected posters no less. I think said posters were just too used to their victim privilege if that's the right way to describe it.

I think part of the unspeakable fury directed at the trans lobby is likely fuelled by the same emotions. Despite the clusterfuck that is self id (which I understand) I think many feminists just flat out can't handle the thought that some men have it harder than them in everyday life.

I'd actually love feminism to focus more on men.

Oh, love...

Pratchet · 12/07/2018 19:00

Flutter, can you tell us what you are doing to reduce male suicide.

TransplantsArePlants · 12/07/2018 19:01

hahahaha at 'burn bridges'. You were attempting to leap across a chasm as it was my love.

BettyDuMonde · 12/07/2018 19:02

I spend a lot of time on here at present (I’m ginger and it’s hot out) and I have never seen anyone tell a Muslim to fuck off. Link please?

Flutterby1891 · 12/07/2018 19:02

Fermats.

But how is midde class women sitting on the internet whinging about 'the menz' actually helping women?

Pratchet · 12/07/2018 19:04

Flutter, what are you doing to reduce male suicide rates.

TransplantsArePlants · 12/07/2018 19:04

Don't keep asking Flutterby what Flutterby does about male suicide. He'll make up some tedious guff which we'll feel duty-bound to argue with.

Datun · 12/07/2018 19:04

Flutterby1891

The ultimate act of violence is murder. But women also endure a society riddled with misogyny.

Within the duration of my marriage, my husband could have raped me with impunity, as it was not classed as illegal. And I'm really not that old.

If murder doesn't get you, then I guess rape, sexual harassment, sexual assault, domestic abuse, emotional abuse, the overwhelming number of schoolgirls who report being assaulted or the 11 million women who posted about MeToo in under 24 hours, won't get you either.

You might want to consider that there are 14,000 men in prison for sexual violence. Compared to 120 women.

Your tedious attempts at Whataboutery and NAMALT are distinguished only by their predictability.

Flutterby1891 · 12/07/2018 19:04

Betty.

I think the poster was called MagnificentDelurker. You should be able to find it from that.

Flutterby1891 · 12/07/2018 19:05

Caribou.

My following post clarified that I meant women not men.

BettyDuMonde · 12/07/2018 19:06

So not a regular poster then? More likely a troll?

Pratchet · 12/07/2018 19:07

But it seems the only thing he does is come and tell us we should be doing something. So he doesn't really care. If he care he could have spent all of today writing letters to MPs or volunteering on a suicide line, or could join for example Call To Men Uk which campaigns on issues like this from the point of view of toxic masculinity.

Flutterby1891 · 12/07/2018 19:07

Datun.

I doubt he could've raped you with impunity in reality. Wasn't there also a law still unabolished in the recent past about it being legal to shoot a Welshman with a bow and arrow on certain dates?

TransplantsArePlants · 12/07/2018 19:08

Pratchet

Indeed. Or he could say he's done that. He's had a bit of time to think something up by now Wink

Pratchet · 12/07/2018 19:08

Instead he's just here, criticising women all the livelong day, instead of doing something real. It shows a certain hypocrisy.

LangCleg · 12/07/2018 19:09

Well, this is a tiresome thread.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 12/07/2018 19:10

And again the assumption that everyone here is middle class...

Pratchet · 12/07/2018 19:10

He could but it doesn't change the fact he's spent days - is is two days now? - criticising women for worrying about murder, when he could have been doing something to tackle male suicide.

Flutterby1891 · 12/07/2018 19:10

And I know I'm being a bit of a GF, even if I'm being honest about my opinions, but many other women think this too I'd wager. Hence, why 85% believed in "equality" when surveyed but only 7% wanted to identify as "a feminist". The dictionary definition is very distinct from the seeming reality.

FermatsTheorem · 12/07/2018 19:10

Fluuterby, you're about as much of a feminist as I am the queen of fucking Sheba.

I'm going to engage the virtual "hide poster" button and I strongly suggest everyone else does too.

So, back on topic: there were some really interesting points upthread about authoritarianism and cults - thanks in particular to redtoothbrush. Can I also recommend "the Authoritarians" by Robert Altemeyer?

Ereshkigal · 12/07/2018 19:10

Of course he could have. Until 1991. That's what rape in marriage not being illegal until the law was changed meant, oh ignorant one.

Pratchet · 12/07/2018 19:11

So you do nothing, flutter, tobtackle male suicide rates? Nothing at all?

Ereshkigal · 12/07/2018 19:11

I'm going to engage the virtual "hide poster" button and I strongly suggest everyone else does too

Yes sorry. Not going to participate in the derail further!
