Is having a 'true self' consistent with womanhood? Don't know about you lot but I had a girlhood full of damaging messages about how I was supposed to be selfless, then an adulthood full of caring responsibilities to the extent that now with two preschool children I have lost most of what 'sense of self' I had left. Currently I don't think I'd recognise my 'true self' if I met it on the street.

I though MB hasn't had 'bottom surgery'? Anyhow, I love the portal idea and my perfect portal would be the excitement of the back of the wardrobe in Narnia with Dr. Who on the other side. Not D. Tennant himself who, sadly, I can't get excited about, but his Doctor was devastatingly wonderful. Possibly a total narcissist to boot, but why break the habit of a lifetime? I'm sure I could deal with him as his assistant.

Like many other posters who are working class, poor, and live on sink estates I was expecting MN to be a portal to a shiny new, white, middle class lifestyle.

Nah - true self imho is just a justification for "selfish fucker".

Doesn't matter the context.

A man leaving his kids and wife of 20 years for a younger model (literally in some cases) is finding his true self and true soulmate.

If your sole concern is your true self then frankly 99.9% of the time you're a narcissistic, egotistical asshole.

Most people are too busy dealing with real life to have the time to spout such rubbish.

We are busy cooking dinner, doing laundry, cleaning a home, doing childcare and on top of that earning a living with a full time job.

Yes, motherhood certainly opens your eyes. Home births stuff the analogy up, but the delivery suite could be the portal.

Can we also have some standing stones, etched with ancient runes and a special incantation to open the portal?

Can we all say things like "Well met by moonlight" and waft herbs about (I think, I've got some basil in the fridge that is past it's best, but might do for a spot of smudging)?

I thought MN was just somewhere to kill the spare twenty minutes between tea the bedtime onslaught, if I knew there was some portal shenanigans I'd be on here more often, I love a portal, me.

I couldn't lurk without commenting on this one...
I came across Feminism Chat in January. My husband and I were watching CBB and were shocked at the way India spoke to some contestants and her sense of entitlement. I knew that MN would probably have a thread about CBB and ended up here.
I have found the posters in Feminism Chat to be level-headed, informative and inspiring. I have learnt a lot over the last six months about women's rights and now feel more educated on a broad spectrum of issues not related to trans issues.
Lurking here helped me to have a better experience during the later stages of my second pregnancy and to be more assertive during labour and aftercare in hospital.
I have not been radicalised, I feel empowered to be a woman now. I will not let anybody take that away from me now that I have found it.
