I think I will send a card to the hotel, thanking them.

NotTerfNorCis · 19/07/2018 08:40

People should be able to hold meetings without this level of harassment. The TRAs are acting like fascists.

Ereshkigal · 19/07/2018 08:41

Wow. It's a meeting about women's rights. Protestors were allowed to freely buy tickets and speak at the meeting. They were given the floor to say what they wanted. It's disgusting. They're just rent a crowd idiots looking to start trouble.

LangCleg · 19/07/2018 08:44

Right side of history my fucking arse.

R0wantrees · 19/07/2018 08:45

People should be able to hold meetings without this level of harassment. The TRAs are acting like fascists.

Rose of Dawn's video is important in identifying the threads which run through the TRA movement:

'What Does Co-Opting The Trans Movement Look Like?'

"Radical far-left activists often co-opt unrelated movements to enforce their ideology on others. Here, I take a look at this phenomenon taking place in the trans community."

R0wantrees · 19/07/2018 08:56

Jess Bradley (NUS officer discussed in Rose of Dawn's video) & Lily Madigan are speaking at Labour LGBT+ event

See Lily Madigan's comment yesterday in response to the breaking story:
'A transgender prisoner has been charged with committing four sexual offences against inmates at a women's jail in West Yorkshire.

Karen White, 51, is accused of four counts of sexual touching at New Hall Prison, Wakefield.' BBC report

Gosh! I wonder which attendee leaked it Wink

TheMostBeautifulDogInTheWorld · 19/07/2018 11:47

Me too. If anyone does want to contact the hotel in question - there are two Jury's Inn hotels in Brighton, and it was the "Jury's Inn Waterfront" where we had the meeting.

I have no problem whatsoever with the protestors outside; they have every right to protest of course. (Though if they reneged on an agreement with the hotel to end at 9.30pm that's not very helpful of them). But harassing the workers at the hotel is very much not on.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 19/07/2018 12:11

mogle

Dreadful behavior leaking the information like that

Potentially putting people in danger

daimbars · 19/07/2018 13:30

As I mentioned earlier in the thread (before the meeting), the protesters originally had the wrong location. There are two Jurys Inn hotels in Brighton and they had published the wrong one on Twitter. I didn't correct them.

The tickets are publicly available and only a fiver so it hardly requires the detective skills of Miss Marple to get the correct location. I'm surprised they made such a cock up to be honest!

daimbars · 19/07/2018 15:09

Thanks for the well wishes. Sophocles and others who have had a difficult week, hope you are doing okay.

Just getting back to Sarahconnor1

Sorry Daim I don't understand what you are saying. The petition asks for:

-Respectful and evidence-based discussion about the impact of proposed changes and for women's voices to be heard.

-The government to consult with women’s organisations on how self-declaration would impact on women-only services and spaces, data-gathering, and monitoring of sex-based discrimination.

- The principle of single-sex spaces to be upheld – and where necessary extended

The consultation is already live, I assumed most of you had filled it in already (I have).

I think many people will wait whilst more information becomes available. There have been, for example, some significant announcements today with regards the Human Rights Committee report.

daimbars · 19/07/2018 15:22

Ah I see, I thought the consultation was v comprehensive and covered all the concerns I see on here re single sex services, communal accommodation, women's sports etc

R0wantrees · 19/07/2018 15:32

Its a big document though daimbars and as central to many people's concerns are safeguarding issues, it's complex.

The HR aspect is significant.

I think many will also wait until the issues have had further discussion and consideration. Fairplay for Women will of course be publishing comments and information which some will find useful.

LangCleg · 19/07/2018 15:39

Yes. Much more consideration required before filling out the consultation, I feel. I'm involved with quite a few discussions on the best way to approach it and the best points to include in various places: some with various professional interests and some with just concerned citizens.

I think best to pool perspectives and present strong, evidenced-based contributions rather than rushing in like a steam train.

LangCleg · 19/07/2018 15:40

(Thanks again to Red for those interventions. I will be citing those sources.)

daimbars · 19/07/2018 15:52

Sounds wise, wonder if rude Tweets from TRAs count as evidence?

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 19/07/2018 16:00

Absolutely lang

R0wantrees · 19/07/2018 16:01

Sounds wise, wonder if rude Tweets from TRAs count as evidence?

I think some TRAs have collected tweets as 'evidence' !

UglyCathKidstonBag · 19/07/2018 16:04

As Dobby in Peep Show would say
“Jeff’s doing a joke, Jeff’s doing a joke,
everybody quiet now, Jeff’s doing a joke.”

Only in this case it is
“Daim’s doing a derail, Daim’s doing a derail
Everybody quiet now, Daim’s doing a derail.”

WPUK Brighton Meeting: Turning the Tide
Popchyk · 19/07/2018 16:16

I'm not keen on the half-cocked approach (no pun intended).

Better to wait and submit a considered, comprehensive response.

If I had completed the consultation last week, I would not have been able to reference the reports yesterday of sexual assaults of female inmates in a women's prison. Factual real-life incidents will inevitably carry more weight than "this could happen".

daimbars · 19/07/2018 16:40

Just seen on the Facebook event page a woman said she enjoyed spitting at the back of the protester's heads Sad

Literally boasting about spitting on trans people.

No need.

LangCleg · 19/07/2018 16:55

Exactly. And, as we meet and discuss, people come along with ways to express the points you want to make and others have evidential sources from authoritative sources that you can use. Legislative clashes abound, for example. I'm unsure why anybody would want to use gossip from social media in submissions. This would seem a sure-fire way to devalue them.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 19/07/2018 16:57

Better to wait and submit a considered, comprehensive response

As you say pop new facts and information comes out on a very regular basis
